Theatre Roles for Dummies
So, what Iāve gathered from being in theatre so far is this:
The actors are the ones who usually mess things up. Like, if something goes wrong, 98% of the time it was an actorās fault.
The backstage crew are the ones who are supposed to make things happen invisibly and silently, so basically magically, and they have the most miracles happen to them, but when things do go wrong for them, things go terribly wrong.
The directors are the ones who ruin peopleās self esteem, but eventually are forgiven because everyone knows the stress of putting on a show.
Thereās the stage managers who have the pressure of the backstage crew, are at the receiving end of director crap like the actors, but get just as easily ticked off as the director, because thatās basically what they are, the backstage director.
Every once in a blue moon thereās the dude-bro preteen or the completely ignorant and curious small child who manage to find their way backstage and have to either endure the wrath of the director, or, in one specific case that I can think of, be scared off by an actor who just happens to be carrying a shank and heading towards them in character. (That actor was me.)
And then thereās the booth techies. These guys just sit up there, and they have jobs, but most of the time theyāre just cracking dirty jokes over the headsets.
I mean. The booth techies get their jobs done at home. Then just sorta press the GO button.
Trying to edit when you arenāt sure what needs fixing
The best way I've ever heard lighting design described:
A girl who primarily acts but is running sound for a show, listening to me program for my friend, is asked what is going on during a hold: āFrom what I understand they donāt like what they see, and theyāre fixing it by shouting numbers at each other.ā
Why is this me and my friend for shows
My lighting design for into the woods. It's not in these pictures but I have a grid of breakup gobos softly focused to simulate light streaming through the trees.

When your flight or fight instincts kick in, choose fight.
Working a live show can be stressful. Especially when everything goes wrong. But we still gotta power through to keep the show going.
An action scene in a movie: *The hits or gunshots line up perfectly with the beat of the soundtrack*

Just finished upgrades on my LX case. When Iām designing for a freelance gig that doesnāt have a in-house Eos system console, I bring this along. Plug in power and DMX, and bam, my laptop running ETC Nomad has wireless DMX output, and I can connect my phone and iPad Pro as control surfaces with iRFR and a custom TouchOSC layout I developed. I can plug my laptop into the router Ethernet port on the side for maximum reliability, but so far Iāve had no latency or reliability issues with just using wifi.
I started this project when I was 17 in high school, and just recently installed the DMX and Ethernet connectors on the side. Next upgrade would be a better wireless router now I can afford it, but itās not urgent.

Weāre gonna find a way. And if we donāt find a way, weāre gonna find a real close way.
My sound designer
It usually ends up being some sort of OSHA violation but same.
My Lighting Design professorās design of The Glass Menagerie is just stunning.
Struggle #135
Starting the first dress rehearsal 2 hours late!
How do you comfort a lighting programmer?
You console him.
If itās stupid, but it works, itās probably an osha violation

If you canāt pour a glass of soda then just become a fucking electrical engineer
the most unnecessary shit Iāve ever seen
Who has all of these supplies just laying around
āmy dude i am 100% too dumb to even cut the cardboard like that
Ok Iām reblogging because this would be really helpful for theatrical purposes
^Iām glad I wasnāt the only one thinking this^ lol
