Dua Saleh - body cast
A personal essay by Atlanta-based community organizer and writer Clarissa Brooks
âNot even the heat of the devil can stop my people from showing their teeth to the rotten world.â
Les statues meurent aussi (Ghislain Cloquet, Chris Marker & Alain Resnais, 1953).
Statues also Die is a good film for those interested in art and museums. Commissioned and partially paid by PrĂ©sence Africaine it was released in 1953. The film shows how the treatement of African art (called Art NĂšgre at the time and considered simpler) and Colonialism erased African cultures and denied African and Black people the dignity of their past. It was forbidden as in the â50 French still had colonies in Africa, it was allowed on 1963.Â
You can watch it here in (French with English subtitles)Â [many scenes of colonial France and an animals suffering dying]
James Baldwin, auteur de The Fire Next Time

» -- Today, NTS radio's resident artist Christelle Oyiri aka Crystallmess shares with us, for the "Lifetime" project, a new unpublished sound piece in homage to the ancestors, in collaboration with Julien Creuzet for the voice and the texts. âKiss & Tellâ uses field recordings and samples collected by the artist during her recent stay in Guadeloupe - her mother's native island to which she hadn't returned for 12 years.

Get to Know the Filmmaker: Ibrahim Shaddad
Shaddad is veteran Sudanese filmmaker known for his avant-garde experimental style and recently starred in Talking About Trees (Suhaib Gasmelbari, 2019) about the Sudanese Film Club that has strived since 1989 to encourage and fund cinema culture, film production, screenings, and training in Sudan.Â
Three of his films are free to stream:
The Camel/Jamal (1981)* is a report from the life of a camel, most of which plays out in a dreary, small room â a sesame mill. (x)
The Rope/Al Habil (1985)* documents two blind men making their way through the desert accompanied by a donkey. Connected by a rope, sometimes the two men decide the way, and sometimes the donkey leads them through the desert (x)
Human Being/Insan (1994) by Shaddad provides a dramatic and powerful account of the trials and alienation of a Sudanese villager in a large city. Shot entirely without dialogue, the filmâs innovative use of sound helps tell the story of a shepherd who leaves his wife and herd to settle in a nearby town. (x)

The Call of Dance is a documentary series about dance around the world. The pilot was directed in Senegal. This documentary presents intimate portraits of individuals who share the reason why they dance. Bodies in motion express themselves alone, collectively, at the Dakar cultural center, in a Krump battle, on the shore of the ocean, during wrestling sessions, at the heart of an initiatory ceremony in a village.
Through a wide range of stories, this film aims to capture the beauty of dance, at the heart of the action, in order to reveal these precious shifting moments, when consciousness gives way to instinct, identity, claims, traditions, escape... What is the source of this force that sets humans in motion? And quite simply, why do people dance?
