pardon me, i am a non-atearoan so i simply dont have any experience in this matter; i am wanting to ask why you refer to yourself as Pākehā as opposed to white/european or another specific ethnicity/nationality. the wikipedia states that the term is commonly used for those of european descent, but that isnt necessarily mandatory is it? thank you for answering, if you feel it is right to do.

apart from being a quick way to ID myself as both white and kiwi, it's a way to tell people a lot about myself using only one word!

1. I advocate for the use of te reo māori in everyday life 2. I know whose land I'm on and I feel that it's right to use the term māori originally chose for people like me because of this. it represents my commitment to an active role as tangata tiriti! 3. "european new zealander" is a mouthful AND it uses the name for aotearoa that I reckon we should leave in the past. 4. while my ancestry 1000% influences the privilege I have here, I don't feel that I have much cultural connection to europe due to my last europe-born ancestor being maaany generations ago. pākehā just feels more accurate! (not that the other term isn't accurate as well!) 5. it pisses off racists and I love pissing off racists

#all this AND I feel like defaulting to 'white' is a symptom of USamericanisms infecting our everyday reo #which I personally intend to keep to a minimum #their concept of race is not and should not be universal
