Getting constantly called a predator and lumped in with predators really does do things to some people’s brains, even if it’s unconscious. I used to care a whole damn lot about people under 18 reading the smut I wrote, and it was genuinely upsetting for me to consider BECAUSE of the constant wanking and describing every person who steps a toe out of fandom-line as a predator or someone to be afraid of. The discourse pipeline goes something like “you wrote icky smut” -> “a teenager read your icky smut” -> “you personally have contributed to the grooming of a teenager” and although in my logical brain I didn’t believe that, hearing it repeated ad nauseam made the belief imprint itself into my brain to the point of distress.

If there’s anyone reading this that’s struggling with that: free yourself. I promise it’s okay if teenagers read your smut fic or scroll through your account. You won’t get in trouble and teenagers are definitely able to find worse things to read or look at than your fandom works. It is not your responsibility to monitor everyone and you aren’t a bad person if you don’t care as much as a loud part of fandom spaces wants you to care.
