What's ur vision about ryoxedo?
I’m pretty neutral on most ships in general as I find it difficult to imagine a lot of characters in a relationship. I also moreso enjoy the status quo dynamics characters have rather than thinking what could be (except for gx rivalshipping they are in LOVE FOREVER #YAOIWIN). That being said I think the dynamic of Edo and Ryo is pretty funny, but that mostly stems from me really liking Edo while simultaneously not taking him very seriously at all.
Edo is a pretty interesting guy. I tend to over exaggerate his persona and make him out to be more of a “girlypop diva” than he actually is. In reality he is a character almost completely defined by how lonely he is—and that is something really fascinating to me and why he’s one of my favourite characters in GX!
He gravitates towards heroes for a similar reason that Judai gravitates to heroes, given their parallels in their backstories being lonely kids craving for interaction with others. The difference here being that Judai was able to start over and make friends, and Edo for the most part had, as DD puts in, stopped the time in himself, and will not let himself move on. His crazy zealot belief in Destiny comes from his refusal to grieve from his father’s death or to let himself change in any way. If everything has a set path, then his father’s death was a necessity for him to become a great hero—and he is someone who had to go through this as part of his predetermined future. The idea that his father died because of what is essentially chance, and the reality that Edo really isn’t someone particularly special, is especially terrifying to him. Which is why he believes crazy shit like how one’s “fate is decided at birth” which allows for the rest of their whole lives to be predicted. For most of his story, he is a pawn in his own life, which sets him up as someone who needs to break free from that.
He is so arrogant in the beginning when we meet him and puts up these walls around himself, and it’s not until he manages to avenge his father does he manage to break his damaging mindset. There’s some purposeful irony here when it’s revealed the person who he had been looking for was in front of him all along—and his easy acceptance in being a puppet made him completely blind. Even still, after this happens, in a lot of the scenes he is in he is just kind of awkwardly floating around Judai’s friendgroup. He is still just a teen, finally getting to talk to people his age and him being a prodigy has prevented him from having any semblance of a normal life on top of everything else. He really doesn’t know how to do anything other than to pretend to be an adult. His belief in destiny caused him to give up all of his choices in life to Saio to make, as he refused to take charge of his own life, which is in contrast to Ryo, who takes responsibility for his own choices (as stupid as they are) which is why is later actions, such as sacrificing himself to try to save Echo make more sense, as he’s taking agency and control back into his life and actually trying to be a hero.
I think there’s something funny about him pretty much only being able to make friends with Ryo, who is another gifted prodigy kid who went in the opposite direction. It’s also pretty funny how neither of them particularly care about their first interaction being the reason for Ryo’s spiral. The scenes that they’re both in are very silly and they have some insane autism psychic link going on that allow them to just both say nothing to each other and enjoy being there. Edo pretty annoyingly calls him “senpai” in their first meeting, then switching to “Hell Kaiser” the next couple times they meet, and then ending with being on first name basis in the spirit dimension—with him as one of the few characters in the show to actually call him “Ryo”. So that’s fun. I enjoy the mutual respect that they seem to have for each other, although Ryo is able to recognize Edo’s facade quite easily which is undoubtedly frustrating to Edo—rightfully calling him out for just being a kid who needs to learn to be an adult still.
There’s some pretty funny stuff that you can think about with them, like how it was undeniably Edo’s idea to do the whole dark hero group thing and also to act as Ryo’s servant and do coordinated and completely unnecessary roleplay with him—as Edo LOVES to be seen as this unassuming guy before pulling the mask back (comes with his obsession of Heroes I suppose). But ultimately to me in my head, I enjoy them a lot as just friends—or whatever you want to call their relationship in the show—because they have such an insane dynamic already. If anything it’s much funnier to me to imagine Edo having this really humiliating super idiot crush on Ryo which will literally never be reciprocated as a kind of safe fantasy—cause I think that goes more in hand with the actual fact that he IS young at heart, despite his outward attempts to seem mature. And Ryo seems to be one of the few close enough to understand that about him.
That being said, a lot of Edo ships are really funny to me and a lot of fun. I enjoy the heroshipping dynamic a lot and I have this insane egoshiping vision in my head of Edo and Manjoume kissing one night while at an afterparty as pro duellists and it is the worst thing in the world and they both hate it instantly and never speaking about it again. But ultimately I don’t take any of it too seriously <:) I think it’s funny to think of a future when they’re all like in their 30s or something that Edo and Ryo have some insane queerplatonic relationship going on which none of us will ever hope to fully comprehend.
Anyway :) this probably wasn’t what you were looking to hear, but thank you for giving me the chance to ramble! I hope you have a good day!
