NIGHTWING #143 10/21/2026
Written by Dan Watters
Art by David Lapham
it kind of just occurred to me how funny it is that on their second meeting lex looked clark in the eye and said “we have a future and i don’t want anything to stand in the way of our friendship” and clark just went yeah okay sounds good to me and then this man proceeded to get too involved in his love life and tried to give his family money on multiple occasions and hired lawyers to get his farm back and harbored and got medical attention for a fugitive because clark asked and told him their friendship was gonna be the stuff of legends and tied his tie and shot a man to save his dad’s life and hid a minor in his home that clark legally kidnapped and got the necessary restraining order to keep said minor safe and dropped an absurd amount of money on bail bc clark asked and gave him access to caves that the linguist he hired said no one could have access to and asked to live with him when he lost everything instead of with his girlfriend and made him his best man (twice) and came back from the dead and said “three months on a deserted island was almost worth it just to see the look on your face” and bought the deed to his family’s farm so it wouldn’t foreclose and asked for nothing in return except to be a part of the family and came straight to clark when he was going out of his mind and under attack and needed a place to hide and kept his secret for a month while in a mental institution and screamed that clark was taken when he himself was literally being dragged to have his brain fried and let clark steal his car and return it and never called him out on it and pulled him out of a tank that was killing clark even tho he sold him out to his evil abusive father and threw him a surprise party
and clark really walked into a room that was essentially a shrine to him and had the audacity to be shocked
I think a lot about the fact that Dick is the only one of Bruce's children that he met as Bruce Wayne and not Batman
Jason met Batman in that alleyway amidst his attempt at theft. Tim was invested in Batman first before he knew the person under the cowl. Cass knew the mission before the family, the knight before the man. Damian had been raised with stories of the Bat specifically and recognized the legend before his parent. Barbara imitated the Batman's shadow before outgrowing it. Stephanie trusted Batman before/more than she trusted the man behind it. Duke had been raised with the stories of Batman, knew him first before knowing who he truly is.
Dick though?
The first encounter he ever has with Batman is as Bruce Wayne
Bruce who cared not about Dick being a stranger and the larger case unfolding around them, and just saw a child crying and surrounded by his dead guardians, and thought "This is what I was made for" before coming to help him
Bruce who tore through a chaotic crowd to come to a boy with sweet sad blue eyes full of anger and grief, and thought "Oh, you need someone. I can be that someone. Do you want me to be that someone? I'd tear my heart out for you if you'd like"
Not dunking but validating for real comic readers to know Damian & Dick has no substantial writing for a relationship that matches any where close to Tim & Dick’s—we have researched meta posts and hundreds of comic panels at the ready. We were unlucky to have a Bruce & Dick match but said before, the people caping for both is a testament to both their writing.
Jason & Dick is different when every one—even their shooters—are aware their relationship is not the best in canon.
How are there this many Tim stans who have this obsessive competitive need to lord Dick and Tim over Dick and Damian 😭. We're just like minding our business and then here comes a Tim stan out of the blue like DID YOU KNOW DICK AND TIM ARE SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY IMAGINABLE?!

one reason i love superman is how he is very much a loner who keeps people at a distance (often to his own detriment), but he subverts all the typical gruff, rude antihero tropes people usually associate with that type of person. i think it’s fun (and relatable!) to see how being polite, upbeat, or folksy can still be a way to keep people at arm’s length or isolate yourself.
a great example i think of is that scene in the death of superman when lois points out she knows almost nothing about clark’s life growing up, and he just demurs with ‘aw shucks, you know my folks taught me better than to go on about myself’. classic farm boy charm that’s just dodging the question. lois sees right through it, of course (“lois, you know me better than anyone!” “then that’s a real shame.”) – but i just wish it was an aspect of his character that was better understood by people who paint him as just a boy scout.
missing the divine pairing lately

this is a hospital he's trying to break into, btw, for anyone who wants even more comedic context

2022 Pride Month Favorite Canon Queer Characters:
DC Comics, Kate Kane / Batwoman: Lesbian
this is how new yorkers @ mamdani
One thing that really grinds my gear in sv is Clark gaslighting Lex about stuff about himself like can you imagine not telling your supposed best friend about his dad drugging and torturing him to get away with the murder of his grandparents? He could have easily left out his own secrets from the story. (Also everytime a character decides that not telling someone about the danger they're actively in somehow keeps them safer my brain want to jump in a mixer 🥴)
But even more wild (because it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever imo) is the EP in which that dude was murdering meteor freaks and Lex starts looking into his own mutation. Clark acts the same gaslighty way as if it was about one of his secrets, basically telling Lex he's delusional and should stop looking into his own mutation!?!? And why?? Because it's tangentially has to do with the meteors or?🤨 He acts like every instance of curiosity from Lex is morally reprehensible even if it's valid curiosity about his own damn self 😩
like the #1 thing to point out here is that regardless of bruce's intent, what ended up happening is that the batarang sliced through jason's neck/shoulder (interpretations of the precise location can vary, sure) & there was a lot of blood, & jason didn't get up afterwards. that is a thing that did in fact happen! of course fans of jason are going to (1) have opinions about it and (2) choose to explore those opinions, whether it's in meta posts or fanfic.
the #2 thing to point out here is that the rest of the arc happened. this includes throwing two batarangs at jason, one aimed at the head and the other at the shoulder, and jason explicitly commenting this forced jason to choose which one to dodge. this includes things like bruce setting fire to jason's jacket while he was still in it. this includes learning that jason came back from the dead and deciding 'this doesn't change anything at all,' keeping the memorial case up.
aiming a trickshot so the batarang would richochet off the wall behind jason so it'd hit him at the right angle to disarm him is completely in line with everything else that happens! bruce is willing to risk bodily harm to jason (setting the jacket on fire), and capable of making skilled shots with batarangs (the two he threw earlier), and any love he feels for jason his son is not enough to outweigh his need to stop red hood the bad guy (the memorial case).
the #3 thing here is that the arc was a narrative it is a story that has been intentionally written. there is something that winick, who loves pushing characters to their limits and asking what they'd do in extreme situations where their personal convictions are tested, is trying to say here!
bruce is put in an impossible situation where he must choose between two options (letting joker die, or killing to save him) and because bruce is a hero, he chooses the secret third option where no one has to die (making a nonlethal shot to disarm jason), and this doesn't work (because the story is a critique of how batman operates).
"you found a way to win, and everybody still loses!" or however that quote goes...
if the batarang is unintentional, it changes what the story is saying, and what it means. and yes, that can be interesting to explore, but to claim it is the only valid interpretation, that it's 100% for absolutely certain what winick is intending to say, i simply can't agree. also it's extremely obnoxious and condescending.
^because let's be honest that's what this is ultimately about, isn't it? it's not about what's in character for bruce or interesting for these characters' development, or what makes under the hood the strongest as a standalone arc, it's about how hating jason and hating his fans, and hating that they're interested in exploring a comic that you personally think is out of character.
it's you can call people stupid and fake fans and get on your fucking high horse to prattle on about how people should just read the comic and if they have read the comic then it becomes about how they're just idiots who don't understand context or how to interpret pictures.
it's you getting upset because people are writing fanfiction that characterizes the batfam in ways you don't like and when you see fanon bruce kill jason unapologetically, you decide the appropriate response is to go on tumblr and say that canon bruce has never wronged jason ever, actually, and anytime he did wrong jason, jason (and by proxy, his fans) aren't allowed to be upset because bruce didn't mean to and jason was being evil anyway so clearly he deserved it, and really, bruce is the one that was traumatized by the whole affair so batman's the one you should really be feeling bad for.
the batarang incident was unintentional is not even a statement i'm against exploring. it's an interpretation of the text that's valid, and recontextualizes the rest of the arc in a way that i would be interested in talking about!
it's a shame the people pushing this narrative aren't actually interested in talking about what it means.
trying to create an ebay account to sell smthn and tell me why I can't use my REAL LEGAL LAST NAME because it includes "dick" which ebay considers offensive
BUT THEN IN THEIR MISREPRESENTATION POLICY THEY SAY YOU CAN'T COLLECT MONEY TO A BANK ACCOUNT THAT'S NOT IN YOUR BUSINESS OR LEGAL NAME. BUT MY LEGAL NAME INCLUDES DICK, WHICH YOU CONSIDER OFFENSIVE.
the sanitization of the internet is so fucking stupid we live in the stupidest time

Smallville should have let Lex in on Clark's secret and had his villain arc start by forcing him into impossible circumstances where he had to do evil twisted things to protect Clark and stop the truth from coming out because a) it would've been better writing but mainly b) it would have been incredibly sexy and been better than watching porn for me
speaking of Hail Mary projects...
between previous rent, bills, groceries, and having to take lyfts to my surgeon's office that isn't on a bus route, what I had budgeted for being off work with disability pay (only 60% of my paycheck) isn't enough.
I'm $800 short on rent even after a three week extension and I'm looking at eviction.
proof I'm not lying about my bank account:
I don't care about myself. I'd deal with being homeless if I had to, I've done it before. I care that I might be taken from my cat of six years, and the idea of him going through the anxiety of being rehomed.
if you can't help, I understand. If you're tired of me making these posts, believe me, I'm tired of having to make them. I wish I had community in real life but the ones I do are even more poor than I am. For anyone who donates, I will send money back in July when I can withdraw from my 401k if needed.
