The X-Men are an extremely good metaphor for oppressed minorities until they are suddenly an extremely terrible metaphor for oppressed minorities.
The scale on which the first reply misses the point literally never ceases to awe me.
I gotta say, though, this is a place where the X-men are being a good metaphor for oppressed minorities.Ā Specifically, in this case, the disabled community.

The problem is, of course, that a vast number of things have been aggregated under the label of ādisability,ā and many of them donāt even resemble each other.Ā Depression sucks in an objective fashion, whereas autism is just a way of being (which, like many ways of being, may suck at some times, and generally sucks worse when not accommodated).Ā Similar deal with chronic pain versus the Deaf community.Ā These things really should not be grouped together, but they are.Ā And since they are grouped so haphazardly, they will often be at cross-purposes.
It is ridiculous, in the X-men universe, to classify all āmutantsā as one group.Ā You have ridiculously powerful people with little downside, you have powerful people with a major downside, you have people with very limited powers but few drawbacks, you have people with limited powers and massive drawbacks, and thatās not even getting into other divisions, like whether you look like a baseline human all the time, part of the time, or none of the time.Ā āRealistically,ā if you can apply that word to a fantasy universe, Storm and Rogue belong to completely different minorities which should require completely different approaches.Ā But society has grouped them under one umbrella, or forced them to group themselves for self-protection, and thus you have conversations like the one above.
So itās actually not a bad take.Ā Mind you, the X-men have had bad takes, and will do so again, and Iām skeptical about whether āpowersā of any kind even work for a metaphor about minority representationābut this particular vignette has something useful to say.

Iām absolutely not a rabbi, but Iāve been thinking a lot about this, actually, and what stealing might mean to gd. and I know this post is probably a joke but like I said. been thinking about it a lot.
So what a lot of people may not know is that the Torah is mostly like. a farming manual. A day-to-day life guide for 6,000 years ago. And so it has instructions for harvesting, of course. But it says specifically that you shouldnāt reap all the way to the edge of your field, and that you should leave that for the poor. It also says that you shouldnāt take the fallen grapes from your vineyard, and to leave that also for the poor. And a lot more little things like that.
So why is it encouraged? Why doesnāt it count as stealing for the poor to take the food you grew?
I think that gdās definition of stealing would, in this case, punish you if you did take the fallen food from your fields, because youād be taking it from the mouths and bellies of people who clearly desperately need it. Itās not the poor who are stealing, because they are simply trying to survive. I think gd wants us to remember, in our harvests, in our successes, that we have a duty to give what we can to those who need it, and if we donāt, thatās stealing from our fellow human.
In other words, pouring bleach on edible food thrown in dumpsters is stealing, and a mortal sin.

I do NOT have the cultural knowledge to write this alone BUT Iāve always wanted to start a TV show about a group of ghost hunters who specifically have one person from each major religious background so that literally all of their bases are covered no matter what kind of fucked up supernatural being shows upā¦ like one is the like teen son of a Catholic priest and one is a girl whose dad is a rabbi, one of them is pagan, one of them is Muslim, one of them is an atheist/agnostic who specifically tags along to deal with the weird eldritch gray area shit that the rest of them donāt cover, itās just a big ensemble cast of meddling kids and maybe a dog who is some kind of Entity
Their obligatory grizzled mentor runs the local interfaith outreach group. The local interfaith outreach group is just a cover for the ghost hunterās society at this point.
