I hope im not just a blog you follow but also the only person with 100% correct opinions about the little mermaid
Dish those opinions, let's hear it
My biggest issue is the absolute ice cold take of "Ariel gave up her life/voice for a boy" when the film repeatedly shows Ariel was preyed upon by Ursula. She was exploited and stalked by the literal antagonist of the film into making a really bad decision, especially when Ursula knew Ariel was at her most emotional and the least unable to reach out to her support network.
And the deal Ariel made was meant to be an impossible task that she was tricked into taking AND STILL Ariel was smart enough to almost achieve it if Ursula wasn't playing dirty and directly interfering in with it all.
Ariel was absolutely a victim of manipulation and circumstance, and people who use this as an irredeemable flaw in her character act like they got big brain energy when their brains are smooth as fuck.
(not to mention she was 16)
Also?
URSULA is the one who says Ariel’s doing it all for the guy.
According to Ariel herself, what she wants is:
—to be where the people are
—to see dancing and walking
—to ask her questions about the human world and get answers
—to not live in the ocean
—to be part of the human world
—to explore the human world
WHERE DOES ERIC COME INTO ANY OF THIS?!
She wants to see a world she isn’t able to see! She wants to have adventures, not a boyfriend! What the hell!
I would argue that she was totally fine with the boyfriend, but Ursula was the one who forced it to be a priority.
AND ANOTHER THING
Her first impression of him is a dude who is both attractive, capable, and willing to jump back on to a burning ship to save his dog.
Later, dude climbs aboard a SHIPWRECK that's caught in a WHIRLPOOL so that he can RAM IT into a 150-foot-tall MAGIC SEA MONSTER in order to save her.
It's not like girl was settling.
Ariel is a field anthropologist. That she happened to fall in love with a member of the culture she was studying isn't exactly a problem.
#Do people give Milo Thatch a hard time for giving up everything for a girl?#no because not enough people have watched Disney's Atlantis#but that's a secondary problem via @thebestworstidea
Leaving gold in the tags agin, I see.
Something I have seen very few people mention re: Omicron and the current surge:
Please, be cautious. Not just about the virus but about life in general.
Babes, now is not the time to get on the rickety ladder to change that light bulb or tackle that woodworking project using the bandsaw.
Let it freaking go.
Clinics and hospitals are overrun. You don't want to need urgent or emergent care right now, my loves. You may not get it. Please be unreasonably cautious around your homes.
Please reblog this, just to remind everyone that any source of medical risk is also now a COVID risk.

I don’t often share my writing here, but I have nowhere else to show people so here, have a poem. It’s called “The city at night, as heard through my bedroom window.”
——————
It’s nearly midnight in this little city,
and I lay awake listening to the hum of its never-ceasing life.
A bus goes “pish” as it leaves the stop outside.
Drunk men yell at each other under the streetlights.
Someone stops outside my house;
I hear him relieving himself onto a parked car.
Snippets of conversation as people walk from pub to pub,
never enough to get the full story,
often too much information.
I turn over,
pulling the covers around me
against the open window.
A police car wails down the road,
quietly, loudly, quietly again as it speeds away.
Somebody nearby is vomiting onto pavement and I think,
poor sod will have a headache tomorrow.
Someone screams in the distance,
too far away to tell if through fear or joy.
Another police car.
I barely notice them any more.
A cyclist goes by,
they’re playing music through a terrible speaker despite the late hour.
The tinny tune whizzes past
and disappears off into the night.
I roll over again. The city breathes
and moves and pulses -
it has a life of its own.
I go back to sleep. The city goes on living.

Unsafe is pro-life mission.
So I was just casually eating crumpets at 1am with a friend (caramelised biscuit spread on hot toasted crumpets is quite frankly the best thing I have ever put in my mouth) when I had a chain of thoughts that went from the crumpets to my thoughts on my weight via some pokes at the beauty industry and the diet industry. I figured some of you might like to read those thoughts.
I remembered that the pack of six was only 25p in Tesco. Not on the yellow sticker or anything, but 25p is just the usual price for it. I thought about the fact that those six would feed between two and all five of the bellies in our house.
I mean the caramelised biscuit spread isn’t cheap, although Aldi does an excellent knock off of the Lotus spread that all the Instagram chefs use. Also, you don’t need to use a lot for a crumpet so it lasts a while (as long as you can resist eating it with a spoon, not that I know ANYONE who would do that). There are plenty plenty of cheaper alternatives which are just as tasty, like butter, golden syrup, chocolate spread and jam, the last of which can be found as cheaply as 28p a jar in the same Tesco. If you prefer things a bit more savoury, try peanut butter or (shudder) a yeast extract like Marmite, if that’s your thing.
Then I thought about how so many things about this are why I’m fat! Firstly, the crumpets can be as little (depending on accompaniment) as around the same as a head of broccoli. I can have my belly filled satisfactorily two or three times by the crumpets, whereas the broccoli needs accompaniments to make it into a meal. My belly is not going to feel satisfactorily full from a third to a half a head of broccoli on its own. So I buy the crumpets to fill in the gaps where there isn’t stuff to make myself a full meal.
Secondly, the crumpets are hands down more delicious than the broccoli. If it’s cheaper AND tastier, why would I choose the other option? Why SHOULD I choose the broccoli? If your answer is “for your health” I can only tell you that I’ve lost interest in that and can provide sources, which I think I’ll do in the comments, in support of the argument that being fat is not an indicator of a persons health and that the diet and beauty industries have a lot to answer for.
The misogyny of patriarchy.
This is Mr Seven’s ‘City’ and though it might look like an untidy bedroom floor to the untrained eye, it is actually a very carefully thought out creation. It is comprised of Brio and Hot Wheels tracks, some of which are battery operated and some which are simple wooden toys. He begged me not to ‘destroy’ his City, on which he had worked so hard, and the act of tidying up the bedroom would also mean the destruction of the City. I would rather have my kiddo happy than meet someone else’s arbitrary definition of “tidy enough” so it stays. 😃

There are very good reasons why child labor laws exist:
Before child labor laws, children would work and give the money they earn to their parents. So unless children have control over their finances, child labor would just make children slaves to their parents.
While a rich child may want to work a few hours a week in order to have some extra money to spend, poor children are more likely to be working in order to make sure their families don’t starve. If children can work, they can be expected to work as an alternative to receiving food stamps or other types of financial assistance. No child should ever have to go through that.
Most likely, a child is not going to be the most skilled employee, and their boss knows that. The only reason to hire a child is because they’re less likely to have the resources to defend themselves against abuse.
So it’s not ageist to have laws against children working.
However, it is ageist to use the fact that children don’t work as an excuse to defend your power over them. It is ageist to believe that you have the right to treat them like your property just because you buy things for them, while knowing that them working and making their own money is not an option. If you choose to have a child, you choose to bring someone into this world who you know will be fully dependent on you and will not be allowed to earn their own money. You owe them. They don’t owe you anything.

My friend Stephen has been living outside of Waitrose on Marmion Road for five months, having been made homeless on Christmas Eve 2017. He, like any rough sleeper, needed somewhere to sleep that was sheltered away from the tremendously changeable weather conditions of the earlier months of the year - the biting cold and torrential rain of January to March, and the stark hot sun which starts to emerge from April and grows steadily more unbearable as the weeks go on. So he chose this spot. He kept his spartan belongings as far out of the was as he possibly could, neatly piled as close to the wall as he could get them, so that there was ample room for passers-by. He steadfastly refused to beg for money, having far too much pride for such a thing, and survived only on the generosity of strangers who offered him food and drinks to get by on. Stephen is unerringly polite and friendly, and has built up a lovely rapport with the ‘regulars’ who pass by and say hello to him each day. In recent weeks, Stephen has suffered two strokes. He has to take regular medication because of them, and keeps this at a friend’s house because he fears other people on the street might steal them if he keeps them with him. Because of his poor physical health, the twenty-minute walk to the friend’s house takes him an hour, and he physically could not carry his blankets, what little clothing he owned, and his few other belongings with him three times a day, so he would leave a little note letting people know he had just popped to take his medication and to please not touch his stuff. Two weeks ago, he came back from one of these two hour round-trips, and found that all of his belongings had been removed. A letter and photographs of his neat little pile of things had been left by the council. This was on a Thursday evening; the council’s letter informed him that he could retrieve them on Tuesday the next week. Luckily I and a few of his other friends, members of the general public who care about him and his welfare, managed to get together a new sleeping bag, some toiletries, a few clothes and other things essential for Stephen’s wellbeing. Goodness knows how the council expected him to survive on the streets for five nights with literally nothing but the clothes he stood up in. Stephen visited me on Monday and went off at the usual time to his friend’s house for his medicine. Ten minutes later, he called me and hung up immediately so I would know to call him back (we do this, obviously, so that he does not use up his phone credit too quickly). As he picked up, I said immediately, “I know what you’re going to say. They’ve done it again.” Stephen was audibly upset, the council had indeed removed everything he owned - everything that the general public had worked so hard to provide him with in his time of need - and stuck this notice to the window of Waitrose. Don’t you dare tell me there’s no homelessness problem in Portsmouth, and don’t you dare tell me that Donna Jones and this current Tory council give a single solitary toss about the plight of rough sleepers in this city. That a gentleman like Stephen could be not only left sleeping on the streets for five months, even after suffering two strokes and being left very unwell as a result, but that they would take his worldly possessions twice, expecting him to live exposed to the elements with nothing whatsoever to protect him, is disgusting. He’s asked for nothing but kind treatment and respect. As he said to me the other day, when speaking to the council, “It’s like my lips are moving but nobody understands what I’m saying.” For more information on Stephen, and to listen to an excellent piece of music written in his name by the electronic artist Grand Mal, please visit this link.
