Weâre going to caucus for youth voting!
Hello, Tumblr, itâs ademainalors, I know I said I was ditching you all for Discord, but I have something important to say, and this is a nice platform for wordy things. I live in Minnesota, in the United States. Many of you all also. Many of you supported youth rights back when I was really actively posting in middle school and high school, many of you are now adults, Minnesotan adults.
The DFL is doing caucusing, the DFL is our Minnesotan version of the Democrats, itâs somewhat split off from the National Democrats for niche Minnesota History Reasons, but the important part is, if you are living in a place where the Democrats are doing remote caucusing, which I think is all of Minnesota, but caucuses are kind of a hyperlocal thing, you gotta sign up by February 1st, which means if youâre like me, you gotta sign up right now, but when you sign up, make sure to submit your Minnesota DFL Resolution Form, and be prepared to talk about it, for a lower voting age. But wait, what is a caucus? Basically, political parties have ideas, platforms, that make them a party, they agree on stuff. But why the stuff that they do? Like why support climate change? And the answer is that, itâs based on what the loyal voters in the party want, and they decide it through local meetings, called caucuses, more information can be found here.
What should you put on the Minnesota DFL Resolution Form?
1) Fill out the information at the top, some of it is kind of niche, you should be able to find it out using your information in the caucus finder
2) Pick a category for this resolution on voting age, I think Government Accountability to the public fits it best.
3) Write a title or copy and paste this title that I wrote for you: Resolution for Youth Voting Rights
4) In the âBe it resolved that:â section, you should copy and paste this: The DFL supports lowering the voting age.
5) In the âYou may add a brief explanation or your two or three strongest supportive pointsâ I wrote you some Whereas statements that you can copy and paste, copy and paste the two or three of them that you think would convince your literal next door neighbor to vote for this platform. If you think they would all be garbage in convincing your literal next door neighbor, itâs time to write your own whereas statements! Anyways, here are my Whereas statements, remember, 2 or 3. I wrote more than that so you have some flexibility.
WHEREAS: Young people have adult responsibilities, but are denied the same rights. Young people have jobs, college credit, and caregiving responsibilities long before they turn 18.Â
WHEREAS: Young people are expected to follow the law, but have no say in making it. Young people are often tried as adults in court, and are subject to incarceration for laws they had no say in.
WHEREAS: Young people are directly affected by government policy, especially those concerning education, climate change, and gun control. Young people have died and are dying from the impacts of political policies before they have been able to vote on them.
WHEREAS: Young people are active stakeholders and leaders in the political process, especially in movements for gun control, education, and climate change. Young people are grassroots activists.
WHEREAS: When young people are allowed to vote, they are actively involved in the voting process. In Takoma Park, Maryland, when the voting age was lowered to 16 for local elections they had four times the turnout rate of adults. Hyattsville, Maryland similarly had higher turnout for 16 and 17 year olds when it lowered itâs voting age. The Chicago Primary election had the highest turnout in itâs 17 year olds 2014.
How did I write these? I looked up the proper format for a resolution, I used it as a template, and then I peeled the vibe from this online article about why the voting age should be lowered, and gave it a DFL glow up.
You may be wondering âbut what if I am a Republican or something elseâ and the answer is that, I need YOU to be a volunteer writer, and information gatherer. Go find that Discord link on this blog. Pop in there, and at ademainalors with some party platforms. But only do that if you actually are a Republican, Green, Libertarian, Socialist, Weed etc, and I will edit this post with your stuff. I am not going to even attempt to write that, you know your party best, you know what talking points to make to your party and how best to phrase them. You know your people, and you know the young people of your party and how they choose to articulate why they should be able to vote. I am Democrat Farmer-Labor, and so I know how to write that way, and so I am going to trust that you are more capable of understanding the rhetoric of your party. Volunteer!
This also goes for other places with caucuses coming, or people in the distant future who want to caucus, go find me on Discord and at me, or on Twitter where Iâm also ademainalors.
You may be thinking, this would gain more traction on TikTok. I am also going to trust that you are way better at making a TikTok than I am. This also goes for everything else. Spread this far and wide in your medium of choice, weâve got a week to get it done.
You may also be thinking, where is [my favorite non-profit] in getting us to caucus, and the answer is that most non-profits, especially the ones youâre thinking of, canât lobby without losing their tax-exempt status! This type of activism can only come from the grassiest of roots, and thatâs by design. So spread it far and wide. Use whatever strategies you want, although, donât lose a non-profitâs tax status, Iâd recommend.
What if we win? Then we get to lobby state legislators and be more convincing.
What if we lose? We probably wonât lose, I did one of these in pre 2016 times, and it got rolled into a larger party platform about protecting voting rights, you will get heard, even if just a little, but while that is the vibe, thatâs also not specific enough. This to say, if we fail, Iâm going to queue this blog post to be reblogged next year, and weâll do it again. Rome wasnât built in a day. If we win, we win. If we lose, we also win, because youâll have learned about caucusing and will be more comfortable with the experience, and will be more talented when you do it again.
