Bruce's hands were shaking as he gripped the steering wheel, shifting in his seat. He's trying to get his breathing under control but it's a struggle with the drugs still in his system. It's been two days. Two. But he can barely remember anything, and that simple fact fuels so many different emotions.

OR: Bruce is assaulted, but that gets miscommunicated. Everyone is having a horrible time, but there is hope.

Bruce Wayne is a bad person. He has known it almost his entire life. It’s why bad things have happened to him since he was only five years old, when two nice people ask if they can drive him to an ice cream factory, and Bruce is stupid, and follows them. It’s in every friendship, like the one Bruce and his neighbour used to have, where Bruce never enjoyed doing well, and that was wrong. It’s in every reflection of himself, like the mirrors people would press him up against as they told him he was brave, and not broken, even though he was shattered long before he ever heard those words, and never put back together. It’s in every secret Bruce has ever kept, which are buried so deep within him, that he isn’t even certain he can dig them out, and doesn’t think that he wants to. It’s in every promise— whether gifted or given —because in the end every one of them is nothing but ash. That’s okay, though, because Bruce can endure. He can endure, because he knows by now that love is enduring things, and waiting for his reward. Yes, Bruce can endure, because that’s what love is.

“What…” Bruce shakes his head slightly, grunting at the effort it probably took him to make such a simple movement. Jason knows that under that cowl his eyes are flitting about wildly, doing his best to take in every detail and analyse all the information available to him, which can’t be much given the position his head is in: laid against Jason’s chest, tilted up so that their eyes meet, and unable to move very far. “Jason?” His voice sounds rough, thick with blood and scratchy like he’s recently been strangled (and maybe he has, Jason doesn’t keep tabs on him, so who knows). “Yeah, old man,” Jason replies, trying to keep his voice steady and not give away the pure panic that’s currently rushing through his veins, “It’s me, try not to be too disappointed." Or: Jason and Bruce get trapped under an exploded warehouse, and there is no such thing as a happy ending

Bruce knows he’s not good. Well aware that he deserved what Alfred gave him when he was a child. But now that he has children of his own, Bruce can’t fathom disciplining them like he was. That doesn’t mean Alfred was wrong to inflict those punishments on Bruce. Bruce deserved it. Just not his kids. Never his kids.
