The backstage minigames in chapter 3 actually point to this very clearly! Rather than being a retelling of the Weird Route, like was previously assumed!

When you get the shelter Key, you're told that both Noelle and Kris were used up, to which Kris themselves has a physical reaction!

Thus directly contradicts the Weird Route, where Noelle remains a key figure! But do you wanna know what route would require no longer using Noelle? That's right! One where you get the thorn ring before *abandoning the weird route entirely*!!

And on top of that, once we have full control of kris, Kris themselves will become completely useless to us, as their body will be ours to control!
