Scene Three, Take Six Hundred

Number 1:

Jeeves, as seen above, in the early parts of the series wears sleeve protectors (also sometimes called working sleeves or oversleeves). Sleeve protectors were cloth sleeves worn over a shirt’s sleeves (from wrist to just above the elbow or forearm), to keep the underlying shirt clean and safe from dirt, spills, ink, soot etc. I adore how they are shown and majority of the time he also wears silver sleeve garters with the oversleeves (seen in image three). Though what irks me ever so slightly is when he doesn't wear the oversleeves and only has sleeve garters or when he opts for his white apron though I can understand why it changes.

Sleeve garters were used mostly only by working classes, this was due to tailoring being something of luxury so shirts would be manufactured with very long sleeves and would come with sleeve garters. The garters were used by rolling up the sleeve to the appropriate length and fastening the garter. I would love to see more of this in art! People tend to forget it.

Number 2:

Jeeves usually wears one of these two collars, the Wing Tip collar (LEFT) (you can call this an 'Arrow collar' after the the company which manufactured the [Arrow Collar Company which was founded in the US in the late 19th century]. However 'Arrow collar' became a generalised term for for a stiff, starched, detachable collar, even when made by other manufacturers. So this is technically not the correct term.) and the Club collar (RIGHT). These are detachable collars which were very popular in the 1920s. detachable collars existed for the following reasons; In the early 20th century: Shirts were expensive, Laundry was labor-intensive, Collars got dirty much faster than the rest of the shirt. So instead of washing the whole shirt, a man could replace or launder just the collar, this could keep the appearance of a fresh white shirt daily. This was especially important for clerks, shopmen, and working professionals who needed to look respectable. (like Jeeves!). In the 1920s the wing tip collar was normally only for evening wear (tuxedos and for servant’s uniforms.)

Club collars were mostly worn by young middle- and upper-middle-class men, clerks, students, junior professionals, fashion-forward working men on Sundays or evenings, men who wanted to look modern but respectable. Though they were less common among manual laborers (impractical), Very conservative older men, Formal business settings after WWI.

Number 3:

Jeeves tends to swap between between a Stoller jacket (also reffered to as a Black lounge jacket or a Stressman) and a Morning jacket. A stroller jacket is a less formal lounge jacket, intended for daytime leisure and social outings rather than business or evening wear. It was what a well-dressed man wore when he was walking in town or parks (strolling), visiting friends, attending daytime events, traveling, being respectably dressed without wearing a full business suit. The stroller jacket has some key characteristics for example, the cut and structure was normally, single-breasted (most common), two or three buttons, softly structured compared to business suits, often slightly shorter and more relaxed in cut, and were not tightly tailored like a formal frock coat. The colours were mostly, greys (light to mid), browns, olive, muted blues, subtle checks or herringbone patterns. However they were rarely black as black was reserved for formal wear. (Jeeves only really wears black as it is apart of his uniform which should be formal) A stroller jacket was typically paired with matching trousers or contrasting trousers (very common), waistcoat optional (often worn, but not required), soft shirt or detachable collar, a tie or cravat, felt hat, straw boater, or cap. After WWI, men’s suits became more standardized, and the distinct term “stroller jacket” faded.
