CELLULAR’S RESPONSE TO VIRAL INFECTION

WE’LL BE REFERRING TO THIS PICTURE BELOW A LOT!!

FIRST, LET’S ADDRESS SOME TERMINOLOGIES:

ANTIGEN

Any substance foreign to the body that evokes an immune response either alone or after forming a complex with a larger molecule (such as a protein) and that is capable of binding with a product (such as an antibody or T cell) of the immune response

NB: They are “Markers/Identifiers” that cells use to detect foreign substance and then message other cells that “this specific marker is BAD”

[Eg. Antigens on a bacterial cell wall can be detected by the immune cells as foreign to trigger an immune response]

ANTIGEN-PRESENTING CELL [APC]

An antigen-presenting cell (APC) is a cell that displays antigen complexed with major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) on their surfaces; this process is known as antigen presentation. T cells may recognize these complexes using their T cell receptors (TCRs). These cells process antigens and present them to T-cells.

Almost all cell types can serve as some form of APC. They are found in a variety of tissue types. 

Professional antigen-presenting cells, including Macrophages, B cells and Dendritic cells, present foreign antigens to helper T cells, while other cell types can present antigens originating inside the cell to cytotoxic T cells.

Major Histocompatibility Complexes (MHCs)

The main function of MHC molecules is to bind to antigens derived from pathogens and display them on the cell surface for recognition by the appropriate T-cells. MHC molecules mediate interactions of leukocytes, also called white blood cells (WBCs), which are immune cells, with other leukocytes or with body cells.

NB: Antigen-Presenting cells [such as Macrophages and Dendritic Cells] will take the Antigens from foreign substances [eg. Bacteria/Virus] and send the message to T cells to “Attack anything with THIS ANTIGEN”
