βOrganic Interactionβ My installation for The Nest art festival 2016 in Bahrain. 10 days of intense hard work, using the recycled wood used from last yearβs festival and inspired by the human communication, the way we find the way to interact with each other, through words or any other non verbal communication. I tried to show the human necessity to interact with other humans, breaking the barrier of language sometimes.
Many thanks to my team Almas and Shahjahan, Mohammed, Reham, Huvil and everyone at Al Riwaq Art Space.

Great new video by our partner organisation Culturunners as part of their Crossing the Line series in partnership with The Guardian.
After the US Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for the Dakota Access pipeline to drill under the Missouri river, Saudi Arabian artist Ahmed Mater joins protesters at Standing Rock to celebrate their victory.
Wise words from Crossway Foundation alumna Basmah Felemban -- let's start a conversation:
"I've been trying to be more genuine on my social media lately because I think I've created this serious, dull persona without noticing throughout the years. So here's something that's been on my mind:
I've been a bit scared of making new work for the past year or even more, I don't know if my work is real enough, I don't know if it makes people feel calm and happy like I want it to.
I also realised that making art your job is not all fun and games and it's time now to think about how I can have a decent life continuing something I have already started and am committed to. I have too many paths I'd like to work on for my future and with how quickly our country [Saudi Arabia] is changing, it seems impossible to make any decisions.
I don't want to be just a producing artist, I never wanted to be... I always thought I knew exactly what to do and it's scary (also exciting) to see myself changing my mind and considering new things. - Art in our region as a career is quite a new concept, and I think we should talk more as artists about our options, plans and concerns. How can we survive and develop our careers with the resources available to us?
What kind of platforms do we need to help us focus on our work and be considered as contributing members of society who are helping to build a rich cultural heritage?"

Alumna Tulip Hazbar illustrated the front cover of the latest issue of The Carton. This edition of a magazine is a tribute to the sesame paste that is said to have put the Middle East on the food map. The process of creating the cover started with a sesame seed. A tricky ingredient to illustrate, tahini is visually adapted within the pages of the magazine, while the cover focuses on the birthplace of tahini: the sesame plant. Fond of revisiting the classics β and influenced by her upbringing in the 90s Gulf β Tulip used botanical stickers as a starting point for this piece of work and developed her way up to six possible directions for the cover. The direction that was chosen highlights the heaps of sesame seeds required to make a small jar of tahini, and showcases the beauty of the sesame plant that gave birth to, what is today, one of the most globalised Middle Eastern foods.
