Alumna Tulip Hazbar illustrated the front cover of the latest issue of The Carton. This edition of a magazine is a tribute to the sesame paste that is said to have put the Middle East on the food map. The process of creating the cover started with a sesame seed. A tricky ingredient to illustrate, tahini is visually adapted within the pages of the magazine, while the cover focuses on the birthplace of tahini: the sesame plant. Fond of revisiting the classics – and influenced by her upbringing in the 90s Gulf – Tulip used botanical stickers as a starting point for this piece of work and developed her way up to six possible directions for the cover. The direction that was chosen highlights the heaps of sesame seeds required to make a small jar of tahini, and showcases the beauty of the sesame plant that gave birth to, what is today, one of the most globalised Middle Eastern foods.
