for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
here's my super-quick, easy-to-digest summary that i use when i can't spend more than like 15 seconds on it but need someone to know the basic distinctions:
generative AI - bad evil AI. chatbots, LLMs, image generators, etc. this the one that steals shit.
analytical AI - helpful medical AI. this the one that helps detect cancer early.
game "AI" - fake AI. 100% human created and dictated. this the one that determines game mob behavior n stuff.
losing the battle with my own self-control so will briefly comment and say that categorizing certain types of ai as straightforwardly good and other types as "bad evil," even for the sake of summary, doesn't really hold water. just to give two counterexamples to the distinctions drawn above, large language models ("evil") are being used by human rights groups to parse huge datasets about police abuse while analytical ai ("helpful") is also the kind of ai that animates facial recognition software and the increasingly ubiquitous searchable license plate databases that police are using to stalk people. the goodness or badness of a given ai tool has less to do with its type and more to do with things like scale and scope, transparency, ownership, and contextual application.
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty
Behold, Dorothea
(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)
I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.
He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"
So Theodora's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.
It sounds far more likely that sheâs simply become used to being prayed with in general. Thankfully, prayer plants are famously responsive. You could set up a video to record a timelapse to see how much she moves in the morning and evening, with exposure to recordings of different prayers from various faith traditions, to see which ones move her the most
It's my cat's birthday (anniversary of me getting him) so I told him the story of his life while petting him real good
Highlights include:
For your first two years (when you were small) you lived in a foster home with people who raised you into a very polite young man. Two is like you plus me, that's what two is.
Some people adopted you before me and they called you Timmy (which is a stupid name) and they returned your ass almost immediately because you were so annoying at that age.
Like think about how annoying you are right now at seven years old, but way worse.
I'm better than them though, I don't call you Timmy and I wore earplugs to bed for three years because you love to scream at bedtime. Earplugs are like when I roll over and go back to sleep even when you are yelling so so so loud.
I got you at a time in my life when I was really sick (being sick is like when I'm up late because I'm throwing up and you are a very handsome good boy who sits with me) and they had to put me asleep for a procedure. A procedure is like what happened to you when they put you asleep and took your balls away.
Now you've lived with me for five years. Five is like the number of toe beans on one of your feet. When I clip your nails five is when we're halfway done. But we're hopefully not even halfway done with how long we get to be together. I'm gonna have to figure out new ways to help you count.
Actually I've decided this is a poem
This is getting notes so let me just say

the mandela effect is so funny bc almost all of it can be boiled down to "you were a kid and memory is highly unreliable," "you assumed how a word was spelled based on how it sounded," or "you're confusing two different things"
fruits and vegetables shown in a cornucopia is a highly common visual symbol, especially in the states around thanksgiving. rich old men are commonly portrayed with monocles in cartoons.
it's pronounced "chick." it's pronounced "berenSTEEN" and someone probably read it to you more than you read it yourself. It's pronounced Oscar "MAI-yer" and you probably remember the jingle more than the logo. It's pronounced "fuh-BREEZE" and you barely look at the logo even when you use it. you assumed it was looney toons because they are cartoons. you assumed there was a dash in kit kat because it sounds like a word that could be hyphenated. it's pronounced FRUIT loops.
you conflated the black on Pikachu's ears with his tail
"jiffy" is a word while jif is not + "skippy" is another common peanut butter brand
curious george is a chimp and thus would not have a tail but a child might assume all "monkeys" have tails
anything else
im fucking crying
i think if you showed minecraft or fortnite to a little medieval peasant boy he would probably start writing parodies of church hymns. itâs human nature
this has rendered me speechless
hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause
friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly
like idk man it just feels genuinely parodic to dedicate hours to analyzing how foodways have frequently been used as white supremacist propaganda and then casually toss out an argument that pretty invariably demonizes indigenous hunting practices with 0 regard for traditional knowledge and land stewardship guiding those practices

reblogging this with the addition of my favorite comment on the post
The Angel of Death
FISTS YOU
And then you Die
Context: my teacher translated the verb âto grasp with oneâs handâ as âto fistâ since thatâs kinda what it literally means, but you canât translate it like that into English because âto fistâ means something ENTIRELY different, but she doesnât know that.
So she was explaining how they use the verb to describe the angel of death taking your soul â he rips your soul out of you with his fist. Now thatâs pretty damn metal, but she said word for word âthe angel of death fists you, and then you dieâ which is the single most terrifying and powerful sentence to ever grace my ears
Op i appreciate the context but i was going to rb anyway no questions asked
Round 3:
Which band name do you like best?
Pet Shop Boys
Massive Attack
Note that this is about band names not their music or members.
Tie break poll:
Which band name do you like best?
Pet Shop Boys
Massive Attack
Take 3
Pet Shop Boys
Massive Attack
I'm going to start getting annoyed soon...
>âthis thing is too generic and tropeyâ
>look inside
>forefather of that genre
had a dream i was hanging out with the guy who plays the oldest brother in bridgerton. we were stuck in the waiting room at a pediatrics office for some reason. we sort of knew each other but only in passing so we were doing chitchat when a mom walked in and was like âoh you two look bored. youâre in luck! i have a bunch of toys to donate and some of them need assembled.â she was replacing all the old ancient yucky waiting room toys from like 2001. so she left us with this overly complicated playskool kitchen set to put together but it was made of wood and required allen wrenches.
we were both sitting there attaching different shelves to each other at maddening angles with impossibly small wrenches that made the whole process deliriously tedious when he said âwe never had toys like this where I come from.â
i said, âIn England?â
He said, with a soft sadness, âyeah.â
I said, âwhat kind of toys didnât you have? kitchens? wooden?â
âGood quality. Nice toys. Almost no one had toys at all.â
Iâve been to England and seen toys, you understand. But I thought maybe he came from a background I didnât know. I said, âYeah, I grew up in a place where a lot of toys kids used were old and broken."
He said, "No, you don't understand; toys were illegal in the EU when I was a child."
I stopped screwing the stupid wrench.
"No, they were not."
"Yes, they absolutely were, really. It's true."
I said, "You're like, what? 4 years older than me?"
He shrugged.
I said, "My friends in the EU have all played with toys."
He nodded, "Black market."
I had no idea what to say. I knew he was lying, but I couldn't imagine the ends.
I said, "Ok. Well, sorry that happened to you."
We both started fitting more pieces together in silence, when I looked to the right and saw another donation box full of wooden building-blocks.
I said, "Oh! Blocks are so fun!"
He looked at the blocks sadly and said, "Is that what they're called? We called them turf. Because we used small cuts of turf. I've never seen real blocks."
I put down the stupid shelf and said, "WHAT are you TALKING about?"
"I already told you, toys were-"
"That's not true! That's patently not true! Toys were not illegal in Englandâin the EUâin the nineties!"
I realized I was being very loud and the receptionist was looking at us, so I stopped.
He said, softly, "We didn't play, either."
I rolled my eyes and said, "Oh, what did you do then?"
He kept working and said with a total casualness that enraged me, "Toiled, mostly."
I said, "OH my god!"
Then a nurse interrupted us both. He said, "Excuse me. Your child's appointment is done."
It was at this moment I remembered I had a child, which shocked me so terribly that I woke up.

Imagine being the only person alive who can say this
buzz aldrin and neil armstrong liked to do a thing where theyâd tell unfunny jokes at parties about being on the moon and when people were confused theyâd go âguess you had to have been thereâ
Two World Cup finalists from opposing teams in this fucking picture, this sport isn't real
Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
