Being an artist online sucks these days, but here on tumblr I still get compliments under artworks that I made years ago. I hope you know every WOW and heart emoji and heartfelt compliment and funny comment you left in the tags is part of the reason I kept drawing all these years, in spite of everything that was going on.

after 4 years of drawing webcomics, this is my wisdom:
start now. now. now now now. or else you'll never draw this damn thing
it's fine if you don't have the entire story figured out yet, it'll happen naturally
draw what you want to draw!! webcomics often run for years, so you better work with something you like
don't overcomplicate things. a simple, efficient work flow is your top priority in order to stay consistent
bullshit some things. trace background refs. reuse poses. draw your character's face from different angles and just copy paste it in to save time. be smart about your work baby
take breaks if needed. webcomic burnout is real
sometimes, a panel or a page looks bad. shit happens. move on
lettering is actually really important and super hard to pull off
it's your comic. do what you want forever!!!
I'm begging you again to work smart, not hard. reuse backgrounds. use brush sets for webcomic artists. trace 3D objects. use 3D models to pose your characters
you may need hours or days to draw one panel, but people will look at it for 5-8 seconds. keep that in mind
a simple background is better than no background at all (avoiding the white void increases the quality of your work by a ton!)
sometimes the anatomy needs to be a little off to make an interesting shot/panel. that's fine, don't worry about it too much
at least 2000px canvas and 300 dpi for good quality results
it's okay to stop by the way. it's okay to move on from a project if you no longer find joy in it
Gonna add on with my useless animation degree (and knowledge of a comic project that never got off the ground):
I know it's common knowledge but mangaka and popular comic series have an entire staff behind them. Editors, designers, background artists, etc. Give yourself a damn break if you aren't churning out pages every week, month, season, etc.
You can use one big establishing shot for the first panel and then use details of it in other panels to ground the characters in the space. Then you dont have to draw the entire room again. This saves you hours of work.
Count every win when it happens. Progress feels very slow to you bc you're in production mode.
Don't be discouraged if people say they'll read your script then forget about it. Life happens. You'll find someone out there who will be excited.
On 3D human models: you can use them, yes, but I suggest anatomy and pose studies . Like 15-30 seconds with a pose generator (no AI) Even sketching out 13 poses per day will make a difference in composing panel shots.
but yes, unless you're making a highly detailed fantasy/sci-fi world, there are models and brushes for modern buildings and cityscapes.
If people outside the internet ask about your hobbies, mention your comic. People get excited about art, and it's important to have non-internet perspectives
But, like OP said, do the comic because you want to do it. Drop it if it's making you miserable, and theres no sense of satisfaction when you do finish pages.

Staff has officially posted an update regarding the reblog decoupling, and while they are reversing the change for now, we need to look closely at the language they are using. This is a classic example of corporate "double speak" designed to de-escalate a PR crisis while keeping the door open for the same harmful features later.

The Red Flag:
"We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you."
The Breakdown: When they say they want to give every voice the credit it deserves, they are still justifying the decoupling of notes. They are framing the destruction of the original creator's attribution as a feature for the rebloggers or the loss of community. Their goal hasn't changed. They just realized their current execution was a technical and social disaster.
They also mention working "directly with some of you." This often means selecting a small, curated group of "power users" who may not prioritize the accessibility or safety needs that we have been fighting for.
Viral Hell & The Power of the Call to Arms
To my friends and followers: my condolences for going viral are accepted. I love you. Let’s look at the numbers. My original post on this has cleared 24,000 notes. This is exactly why a Call to Arms was necessary. When we first saw the decoupling, we saw the immediate theft of credit.
In my case, over 10,000 notes were stolen or hidden by the uncoupling before I even realized the extent of the damage. This isn't just a UI preference. It is the systematic erasing of a creator’s reach and legacy.
Why we cannot stop now:
Staff’s reversal is a tactical retreat, not a surrender. Their language proves they still intend to push for a version of decoupling in the future. We forced their hand because:
The volume of feedback was undeniable. 24k notes on a single advocacy post is a massive indicator of user dissatisfaction.
Emails and Support Tickets work. They specifically cited emails as a reason for the reversal.
Public pressure creates friction. By making this a PR nightmare on Bluesky and X, we made the cost of the update too high for them to maintain.
The Mission Moving Forward:
We have won the first battle, but the Double Speak in their post tells us the war isn't over. They are going to try to rebrand a change like this in a few weeks or months.
Keep the pressure on: Continue to reblog your concerns when they surface.
Stay Vocal: They are betting on us getting tired and going back to business as usual. We need to show them that our safety and our creative credit are non-negotiable. Continue to voice concerns when they surface.

Yep. My notes are completely dead now. I was getting atleast a small bump of 10-20 notes daily in my activity bar. Now there's literally nothing. 5k note posts? 3k post? Doesn't matter.

Tumblr is rolling out a new reblog/notes system that completely disregards creators. In their new system, they're taking a twitter-style approach where reblogs will have their own notes that DO NOT contribute to the original post's notes.
Because of this, creators will no longer be able to see an accurate display of likes/reblogs/etc. This is completely altering the way feedback and responses to works are going to be received on this website.
If you come across a fan work that you enjoy, please take the extra step to go to OPs original post, and leave your comment/like/reblog there. Or go one step further and send an ask to OP directly to tell them what you liked!
I really hope Tumblr staff reverses course and reverts to the original reblog system for the sake of the large base of creators who use this site to share their works, but until then, please be considerate and make sure the creators here see/feel the love.
The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
Seriously, this is a tumblr-killer feature. This breaks the most fundamental way tumblr is different from any other social network. This makes tumblr just another blueskytwitterthreads. Or worse: An unfederated mastodon clone.
Please, mutuals, post about this, comment and reblog the original post (while you still can without making it your own quote-post). I don't know if staff is looking or if the feedback would matter, but seriously, this is a terrible change that would kill tumblr as we know it. Please, don't roll it out.
look, I can endure any kind of UI changes that are supposed to help tumblr-rookies to understand how this works. They may be a nuisance, but that's ok, we have x-kit or we can get used to buttons being here or there.
But this. This changes the data architecture. This changes the SINGLE THING that makes tumblr the "... yes and" website. This KILLS THE COLLABORATIVE POSTING THAT MAKES THIS SITE DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER MEDIA PLATFORMS.
Tumblr has explicitly said in the past that they do not look at comments on their updates posts. You have to PUT IN A SUPPORT TICKET AND SELECT FEEDBACK FROM THE DROPDOWN

Reblogged from test three after replying twice on all previous reblogs; every previous post or reblog also includes two tags. Replies, comments, and tags from original post and two interim reblogs are not visible on fourth reblog of this post.
Views of notes on each of the prior tests (Note, there are four existing posts at this point, each with comments and tags, so test three is a reblog of test two, test four is a reblog of test three; in previous iterations of tumblr all of the tags, replies, and comments on those posts would have been visible in the notes of every one of those reblogs).
Literally none of the reblogs with tags or comments are visible on the blog activity, the only visible activity is the replies and even as the OP of the post I can only see the replies on the individual reblog that was replied to.
This seems to make it impossible to have a conversation with anyone on a post except the person directly replying to your reblog, so instead of being a conversation in the town square kind of feeling, it has more of a "I hope my email finds you well" or passing notes vibe.
