Can you please tell me how the "yours truly" AU was gonna go? I’ve been following for a long time because I’ve been so curious and I just wanna know how it went before I leave, otherwise the curiosity will haunt me.
Sure! I don't see why I should continue this project anymore anyways, I'll go through how I wanted to present each segment of the story as well (pink text segments)
Cosmo and Sprout were husbands, owning a bakery together and basically being the most popular couple in town. But one day, Cosmo's birthday, as Sprout was making his birthday cake, an accident happened, causing the house to burn down while he was still in it. This has caused Cosmo both the loss of his house and the love of his life, the accident marking the news everywhere.
This would've been presented through a newspaper article as well as an interview video with all the people close to Sprout and Cosmo such as Boxten who in this AU was a young hire at their bakery, Gourdy and Toodles who always came for treats there, Glisten who was a close friend to Cosmo and many more.
The loss has caused Cosmo such despair that he fell into a depression, one where he couldn't eat, overslept, and eventually pushed him to attempt, which fails of course. At that point in the story he moved back to his parents' house since his house was greatly damaged, so they saw his case progressively worsen, so they decided to call Ginger for help as she studied psychology professionally (an email from Cosmo's mom desperate and worried for her son going to Ginger as a last resort adding that especially since Ginger has always been the closest to Cosmo since childhood) eventually renting them both a house in the suburbs (an ad flyer for a house available for rent in a suburban area)
As they were packing, Cosmo found a computer, remembering it as Sprout's, potentially one of the only pieces of furniture left from the fire, so he decided to take it with him to his new house, and upon arriving there he plugs it in and turns it on, hoping to find any remains of Sprout. The homepage was empty, only having one document named "For_Cosmo" and a shortcut to something called "lovemail", with a strawberry as an icon.
The document was a letter designated to Cosmo from Sprout himself, saying how he knew he'd look into the computer and would've wanted him to read this if he did, talking about how he has been programming something for the past 4 months. (Months spent to both learn code and actually make the program) And it was some sort of daily offline message sender, where he has written at least thousands of love letters to Cosmo and that every day he'll get sent one in an email layout type of app, aka where the "lovemail" icon is from. He adds it was supposed to be a birthday gift but he didn't know when he'll finish it so he wouldn't have minded if he found it beforehand.
Upon opening lovemail, Cosmo is met by a two mails, one from Sprout and one from the System Admin, aka Sprout again
I had actually coded the layout for this since I'm getting into HTML/CSS/Javascript, so here are screenshots of the emails as well as the layout for lovemail
This isn't the best layout but hey I'm still a beginner 💔
And yes, I did say this was an offline program, the "Please do not unplug the modem while receiving messages" in the "Welcome to LoveMail 97" mail was put on purpose.
Obviously, Cosmo is overwhelmed with emotion with this, and does indeed end up opening it every day, noticeably spending a lot of time in this old computer that didn't even have any wifi, in Ginger's eyes at least.
However, as the days passed by, the mails Cosmo was receiving became much more possessive and also quite weirder: the signature shifted overtime from —Sprout ❤️ to —Sprout to —Anonymous, and some of the letters described Cosmo's physical appearance, specifically traits he had gained after Sprout's death like a paler skin tone, a skinnier figure etc. But that's not all, some were even asking Cosmo to reply, "can you say I love you back?" "When will you reply, dear?", when Sprout didn't even add a reply feature.
Cosmo had assumed it was a mistake as he knew his husband to usually have his mind elsewhere, even though he still felt very uneasy and paranoid about that.
And the emails just got even more possessive, more obsessed, more desperate for a reply, slowly becoming more aggressive as well, such as the mail in the first entry of the AU
There is more content, but I'll talk about it in a reblog probably as I'm a bit busy these few days
I didn't like the ending much as it resulted in Cosmo drowning himself in cold water after a specific harsh mail that told him to khs, and since to Cosmo Sprout wrote all of this he thought the love of his life was actually living a miserable life with him, that maybe he died unhappy, or rather he felt relieved when he did.
And due to the guilt, he couldn't bare it anymore and just overdosed in a cold bathtub, that is some sort of parallel to how Sprout died burning while Cosmo died freezing.
The true thing that happened is, as a lot of people guessed it, a virus.
Sprout obviously didn't write any of the letters starting from the signature shift, but rather a malware that installed itself while there was some wifi. It has seen how well Sprout described Cosmo through the letters, aka the only person it has ever known, and wanted to write some of its own for him, going as far as to unlock camera permission so as to see his face. But ofc, it got upset that Cosmo wasn't replying, taking it as him taking the malware's feelings for granted. It snapped, and now Cosmo's gone, no one is alive to open lovemail anymore, and the malware got abandoned in an old computer forever, the thing it has feared the most
I don't like the ending of this, any psychological story that ends with the main character killing themselves isn't my favorite bc it's usually done really badly or felt rushed, (not all of them obviously) and that's how I felt with this ending
While yes Cosmo had some form of chronic depression and was heavily suicidal, I still think if I focused on that aspect of Cosmo instead of fully on the lovemail deal it would've felt more tragic, like someone trying and suddenly giving up under the pressure of feeling like a terrible person
Anyways, I had no regrets abandoning this AU, only the fact I could've told a story through many means of media which is pretty exciting but yeah
