this one may be a uncomfy ask, sorry about that
i'm not Asian, neither is my mom, and I hope this counts as orientalism (I think it is also racism!).
i remember doing homework with my mum and I told her I wanted to go to China or Japan. and then she literally told me that "they'd get you real plump and eat you". it made little 8 year old me very sad.
like to this day her words make me feel violated . like idk why but looking back even though it wasn't her intention, it felt sexual and it makes me very uncomfortable.
😭😭
I don't want to be too mean to your mom but East Asians aren't the witch from Hansel and Gretel 😭 Like when this came up in the inbox I was like ????? I don't even know what to. Okay. Maybe I'll come back and add something but yeah I don't know why you would say that to an 8 year old expressing a very normal regular travel aspiration. I didn't think of that as sexual tbh because a lot of nursery rhymes/kid songs have questionable lines when you think about them for more than 5 seconds (ex. "I'm gonna get you!" while playing tag), but that doesn't change the fact that your mom could have meant it that way and I Don't Like That. There is this weird erotic sadism involved with grouping Asians (especially Asian men) together and then describing them in a way where they are sexualized but in a way that's creepy and impure and overall pervy. This is different from the "Asian men are inherently more feminine" thing. Again I wasn't there but I wouldn't be surprised if a bias was uncovered. Oh also a lot of people online have mocked East Asians for "eating weird food/animals" so this could have been a rather unnecessary extension of that. I'm just baffled truly
@this-is-orientalism
I know this isn't entirely relevant since you are an asian oriented blog talking about a primary asian symbol but I just wanted to throw in that various Native American groups also have a swastika (or swastika like) symbol. It's an ancient symbol that has deep meaning to many groups, and to push all symbols that are visually similar to the hakenkteuz into being a hateful symbol does none of those groups justice.
Again I know it's not entirely relevant since your speaking from an asian perspective, but I figured share more information doesn’t hurt.
Thank you for sharing!
"Its so sad because gangle didnt get to choose her name!" Yeah BECAUSE of jax. Im not particularly an ultimate jax hater but she's literally gangle's abuser. Like deadass. Gangle was miserable in the circus *because of jax*, gangle didnt get to choose her name *because of jax*, she struggled to be herself and could never say "no" to things in the circus *because of jax*. She's terrified of jax, because she's the one who made gangle into the person she was in the circus.
Its like people feel bad for gangle and then try to also ignore the blatant abuse jax put her through. Yes its sad she didnt get to choose her name, but people ignore WHO gave her that name. Unless she decides to choose a new name, she will only be known as the name her abuser gave her.
Gonna make this post really quick because I know it's easy to get confused between the themes, but it's been happening more recently for some reason 😭 This blog and @this-is-orientalism are different, so we ask you to consider whether or not your ask is fit for the appropriate blog so your submission is in the "right place" and answered more efficiently. One is a "this-is" blog that is more focused on confession type submissions and another is a more of a general education blog that is meant to be more in-depth. They both work in tandem (and Mod Teto is highly involved with both), submissions will of course overlap, and we don't necessarily mind the posts being interchangeable, but I think people are mixing them up and it would just be nice for them to be posted where they are meant to be/nm

so tired of white ppl saying its okay to make jokes about nuking japan and destroying the country because "what about the war crimes!!" what about YOUR countrys war crimes??? you have an issue with the government, not the people. saying you want to nuke and kill an entire group because you treat every citizen as someone complicit in what happened is racist!!! and ALSO not to mention completely ignores our Natives (Okinawans, Ainu, Ryukyuan, Emishi, etc)!! everyone be less racist and biased now
They'll do literally anything but look in the mirror. How are they going to make jokes about nuking a whole country of people, most of whom aren't part of the government. People do this with Japan I assume because they view the country as this "evil sci-fi country that's advanced much farther than it was supposed to", trying to be like "oh they're ALL homophobic or ALL racist" 1) Bigoted people exist in every country 2) Is the country you're from/residing in actively committing or have committed war crimes at the same or a far greater scale? 3) Do you think that nuking a whole country of people is an appropriate response 4) Are YOU the person who should be pointing fingers while generalizing a whole country of people??
he would not fucking say that, but with disability.. he would not fucking be able bodied. sick n tired of characters walking away from multiple life changing injuries without a scratch. let’s get some natural consequences in here.
give that knife/sword fight survivor nerve damage. give the character who was shot in the gut a stoma. give that fire survivor lung damage and an oxygen cannula. give that leg injury survivor a cane. give that starvation survivor gastroparesis. give that spinal injury survivor a manual chair or powerchair.
while we’re at it, give your characters congenital disabilities too, just because. give them intellectual and development disabilities. give them acquired and postviral illnesses. dare to make somebody bedbound. for me.
Question do you have tips on how to write asian identity/experiences for someone who's not asian? I know "write what you know (what asian people are like to know) not what you don't know (what it's like to be asian)" but I still feel like I wouldn't be able to write it good (sorry this was worded so strange
taps the sign
TADC is the only fandom where you csn say "I don’t like how Jax fans will automatically jump the gun to defend them, but will continue to hate on Ragatha and Gangle." and then some fucking how they will think, "Oh so you believe that Trans Women don't deserve to live?"
Like no bitch, that is a completely different sentence.
"We need more complex female characters" - Y'all couldn't even handle Ragatha.
"We need to stand by victims no matter who their abuser is..."- Unless her name is Gangle and she's whiny ofcourse...
"Racism is never okay"- Unless the offender created your favourite show ofcourse...

I don’t have time to unpack my full thoughts on the whole argument of ‘you shouldn’t be a burden to the healthcare system’ but I would like to chime in on it:
so, all athletes should immediately stop playing sports. construction workers, anyone with jobs that put them at risk, they need to find different employment. people with uteruses shouldn’t ever get pregnant, either. actually you know what? don’t enter a car or vehicle at all! and don’t even get me started on old people. what age do we think they should just give it up & throw in the towel? 50? 60? after that they become way too burdensome. it’s a problem.
sweet baby eugenicist, your anger is misplaced. they want you to blame yourself instead of their crumbling system. you should be asking, what kind of a fucking healthcare system is it if it can be burdened by the very thing it exists to provide? which is healthcare?!
a lot of ridiculous hypocrisy could be avoided if people were more comfortable admitting that a funny retort or dunk is not necessarily morally correct. like very often someone will say something very funny that was also like, a bad thing to say and so many people make themselves look very foolish thinking they have to reconcile that
to me, the universal trust in doctors from people who haven't experienced medical mistreatment/neglect is akin to the trust that upper middle class and white people have in the police. they haven't experienced the mistreatment themselves so they assume it doesn't exist. they assume that every doctor or police officer is only in it for protecting people. they assume that the people who made the rules for these organisations are somehow all-knowing and know the truth about what is morally correct for society. the difference is that there actually is such thing as a good doctor, while there is no such thing as a good cop.
Amused at the 'cop shows are propaganda, medical shows are just inaccurate entertainment'
No, medical shows are propaganda too.
That's why people act like you killed a puppy if you don't worship the ground doctors walk on
That's why people who are just developing a chronic condition get so shocked and betrayed when their doctor just leaves them to it instead of pulling all nighters hunched over medical textbooks pulling at their hair for three days to give you an answer and/or actually treat you.

its wild the degree to which people talk about reading and eating in similar terms - the concept of a "reading diet", of "media consumption", the idea of certain stories as "empty calories" or "fast food" and some as "eating your vegetables", the moralization of both as personal failings, the framing of health with the specter of degeneration if not complied with... the idea that there are things that are sensorily pleasant and that you find yourself craving, and there are things that sustain you, and those are not the same things. the framing of literacy as reading the correct way and taking away the correct meaning from a text. according to nutritional guidelines
it is okay to have a high amount of screen time, ESPECIALLY if you are disabled and homebound/bedbound.
It is not morally wrong to try to stay connected with the outside world, do not listen to the opinions of able bodied people who could not fathom your reality.
