Deep Water Clam - Blue (2017).
Soft sculpture by HinƩ Mizushima.
the solution to the Mathematician's Lament is to teach calculus in early grade school if not kindergarten & i am being 100% unironic
Why playing with algebraic and calculus concepts—rather than doing arithmetic drills—may be a better way to introduce children t
The familiar, hierarchical sequence of math instruction starts with counting, followed by addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division. The computational set expands to include bigger and bigger numbers, and at some point, fractions enter the picture, too. Then in early adolescence, students are introduced to patterns of numbers and letters, in the entirely new subject of algebra. A minority of students then wend their way through geometry, trigonometry and, finally, calculus, which is considered the pinnacle of high-school-level math.
But this progression actually āhas nothing to do with how people think, how children grow and learn, or how mathematics is built,ā says pioneering math educator and curriculum designer Maria Droujkova. She echoes a number of voices from around the world that want to revolutionize the way math is taught, bringing it more in line with these principles.
The current sequence is merely an entrenched historical accident that strips much of the fun out of what she describes as the āplayful universeā of mathematics, with its more than 60 top-level disciplines, and its manifestations in everything from weaving to building, nature, music and art. Worse, the standard curriculum starts with arithmetic, which Droujkova says is much harder for young children than playful activities based on supposedly more advanced fields of mathematics.
āCalculations kids are forced to do are often so developmentally inappropriate, the experience amounts to torture,ā she says. They also miss the essential pointāthat mathematics is fundamentally about patterns and structures, rather than ālittle manipulations of numbers,ā as she puts it. Itās akin to budding filmmakers learning first about costumes, lighting and other technical aspects, rather than about crafting meaningful stories.

When I am king, we will valorize sanitation workers the way we currently valorize the military
So heroic posters showing trashmen battling allegorical monsters? I'm down.
Yeah but that's just the beginning. I also want Sanitation Worker Discounts at every business and blockbuster movie propaganda glorifying sanitation work. I want random people to salute garbage collectors and thank them for their service. I want drivers who get impatient with the recycling truck and honk at it and swerve around it to become social pariahs

Mules are like horses with the self destruct button removed
...do you mean the 'self preservation instinct' removed????
No, absolutely not. Itās the opposite. Mules will straight up refuse to do things if they donāt have the confidence that they can complete it. This is where the term āstubborn as a muleā comes from. A horse would attempt these feats and break its weak little ankles and roll over and kill its rider. Mules do this because they know they can. Thatās also why mules and donkeys are used as mounts around the Grand Canyon, theyāre both sure-footed and stubborn and will refuse to do things that put them and the rider in danger when a horse would listen to the call of the void and just do it. Donkeys are less domesticated than mules, less dependent on humans and more self-assured, this is why they can be harder to train but also why they have such great self-preservation skills. A mule inherits those traits from its father.
So that's where Skyrim horses get their ridiculous climbing abilities

I should be doing more to appreciate the lack of marvel movies in today's popular culture. I once yearned for marvel movies to have this level of irrelevance. They used to feel almost ozymandian, like an empire that had no beginning and no end. and now tony stark iron man is naught but two vast and trunkless legs of stone.

also at the end when they ask you "any questions?" and you can't think of anything: ask about parking. even if you don't have a car.
I have an interview today in a couple hours, how did the algorithm know I needed this
Btw when they ask if you have questions some actual good options are stuff like āwhatās a typical day like in this roleā or āis this job open because someone is leaving or is this a new positionā
Another good question I stole from a reddit post that has really impressed all interviewers (two job offers!) is: "let's say you hire me and in a year you're thinking you made a really great choice. What will I have done to make you think that?"
It gets them talking about what they're looking for in the role, thinking about how you could fit it, and lets you end the interview getting to reiterate how good you would be for the role and how enthusiastic you are for it.
If you get the 'tell me about yourself' I've actually had at least one interview where they want to know about you as a person.
It might be worth asking them "Do you mean professionally, to get an idea of my work, or personally to see how I'll fit into the workplace culture?"
i have a suggestion
My final for the first year of my fashion and textile course :] fossils cardigan featuring living fossils like coelacanth and lots of dinosaur bones. Big love letter to palaeontology and natural history. Got super into my knitting machine but I wasnāt very adept with it yet so I sort of crocheted around the edges of my pieces and sewed them all together, and crocheted some edges/ribbing. The buttons are handmade from polymer clay. Used some second hand gold yarn I found in a charity shop and a whole bunch of mixed variegated wool together. My most ambitious project yet I completely just did not speak to people for that final month I was working on this š
