The only person who ever loved Cinderella was Cinderella's mother. When she died, she took her child's name with her. All that was left were curses and mockery. The child flees from the abusive stepmother into abusive streets and back, finding no safe place to rest.
Cinderella meets a Prince, and there are no glass slippers or magicked ball gowns. There are only dirty rags and dirty fingers and the Prince is the only person alive with eyes that kind.
Cinderella makes magic. There is no fairy godmother to ease the way. Cinderella learns alone to fight and to read and to negotiate, to do violence and to forge peace. Cinderella fills coffers and treasuries with wealth, armouries with weapons, libraries with books, wardrobes with the finest clothes. Cinderella makes a dowry fit to give a prince from nothing but determination and time.
