I've seen a lot of criticism for these two. For David, when he quickly left the cottage after he caught Ilya and Shane. For Yuna, because of the impression that she is an intense overbearing tiger mom who trues to control Shane.

First, David was right to leave when he walked in on Shane and Ilya. When you catch someone in the middle of a romantic interlude, you don't stick around to make them more awkward and uncomfortable.

Think about this for a second. Let's say you walk in on your sibling or adult child having sex in their living room when they thought they were home alone. You don't stand there and demand an explanation, regardless of who they are fucking. It's literally none of your business. You leave.

It's up to the person whose private moment was violated to decide how it should be resolved. It doesn't seem like David told Yuna about what he'd seen, and I bet that if Shane had decided to ignore it and pretend it never happened, David would have gone along with it.

And then there is Yuna. She and Shane are both super hockey fans. It's a major thing they really have in common. Shane absolutely loves hockey, loves improving his game and getting better at it, and he values the pride that his mother takes in his accomplishments. That said, there is zero indication in the book or of the show that he resents her for her management of the brand deals. It also doesn't look like she needs to be a tiger mom because Shane is incredibly driven and dedicated and always has been. Hockey is his special interest.

In the last episode, when Yuna is standing outside coming to terms with what she's learned, the shock is about the fact that he didn't feel comfortable opening up to her, especially when they are so close, but mostly it's about the lie about Ilya, not about being gay. How many times did we see him tacitly agree with his parents that he hated Ilya?

I absolutely adore how in the second book Yuna loves Ilya so much. There is absolutely no indication that she had a difficult time getting there, either.
