Addiction is a disease that thrives on isolation. Addicts distance themselves from their loved ones for a lot of reasons: for shame, to protect them, to prevent them from taking away access to the drug. We see all of that in this scene. But still Dalinar can’t help but take an interest in his son, can’t help wanting to talk to him and support him. It’s such a good scene and it hit me like a ton of bricks when I first read it.
