Every time an author reassures readers that the smut is skippable I sigh a disappointed sigh. This is not a reassurance. Why would anybody who likes smut want to read smut that was only included as an afterthought and has no impact on the narrative? Insulting. Just don't write it at all if you're not going to make it matter.
#on the one hand I understand that some people donāt want to read smut
Like 85% of tumblr users hate and loathe embarrassment based comedy with every fiber of their beings, but never in my life have I ever seen an author reassure their audience that the embarrassing scenes are skippable.
Lots of people dislike tragedy but never in my life have I ever seen an author reassure the audience that the death and grieving scenes are skippable.
Stop trying to pass off self-censorship as āaccommodation.ā Stop trying to pass off pandering as āinclusivity.ā
Your audience can smell your fear, and it smells rancid.
So, romance genre author here. If your smut is skippable, it shouldnāt be there. Iāll explain. A sex scene is like every other scene in a story: it should move the story forward. Ideally, it does so through conflict, defined basically as a protagonist and antagonistic with opposing goals. This is not people angry with each other but people who want different things! Very basically say one character desires sex to get off and one desires it to bond emotionally. The smut is going to be all about this conflict. And maybe at the end, the first one is like ā that was so intimate, Iāve become emotionally bonded!ā And the second is like, damn that was good sex, Iām gonna see what else is out there and explore.ā
You canāt take that scene out of a story! Because that would mess up character arcs. OTOH, sometimes thereās no real conflict about the sex. So you donāt write it.
Iāve written award-winning utterly x-rated stories and stories that have only deep kisses on stage.
So, if you write a smut scene, it should matter, to the story, to the characters, to the reader. (This is why many sex scenes in movies are dull, theyāre there for female nudity not any story reasons.)
Porn, though, isnāt about story itās about getting people hot and bothered. Itās not lesser, just a different thing than story. ( Though I think the best way to get the audience hot and bothered is putting in a great storyālike Secretaryābut thatās my personal preference.)
#scenesneedconflict #a smut scene is still a story scene #fuck, yes, theyāre hard to write well
