Mr. Trump is far better than any other candidate — maybe any candidate ever — at drawing attention without having to advertise for it.

What’s the best oped ever written?

War in Syria
2013 - A Moment of Truth Looms for Syria by Ahmad Jarba in the WSJ (via Nicola Kelly)
Torture in Iraq
2016 - Owning Up to Torture by Eric Fair in the NYT (via Gypsy Guillen Kaiser)
World Press Freedom Day
2016 - Don’t let Azerbaijan use political prisoners as props by jailed by Azeri reporter Khadija Ismayilova

“If I can use the term on the radio station, women do have a bitch switch and, boy, if you see two women fighting, it’s worse than two men having an argument."
Tip: when you start a sentence with "If I can use the term on the radio...", dont finish the sentence
What makes a good op-ed?
A good op-ed can change your world. A bad op-ed can send you to sleep in two paragraphs. Whatever the subject matter: it is not what you tell, but how you tell it.
For people in policy who write long reports, making an argument in 700 words is challenging. I try to share good examples of op-eds to help them structure their thoughts.
Here are my top 4 op-eds:
Barack Obama - Why We Need Health Care Reform
Viviane Reding - Women in the Boardroom
Barry Malone - Why Al Jazeera will not say Mediterranean 'migrants'
Philippe LeGrain - Euro-Zone Fiscal Colonialism
Definitely room from improvement here. What are the best opeds you have ever read?
Structure vs. content
Several newspapers offer advice for opinion submissions (The New York Times and Financial Times, for example) but there are plenty of experts who can write a stylish tweet but still need help structuring their op-eds.
With blog posts, I advise people to take a “show & tell” approach like an American school: show your reader something that grabs their attention then tell them why it matters (see full presentation below). Good op-eds follow a similar but more sophisticated model, but most guidelines on offer are too simplistic to be helpful.
Here are some succesful recent op-eds I have been involved in.
REFUGEE CRISIS: BORDER CONTROLS ARE EUROPE'S NEW IRON CURTAIN - starts with a historical reference, then explains it.
Refugee crisis: 'You see walking skeletons' - starts with a compelling story and a wider problem, but is a little vague on blame and solutions.
Why FIFA’s New President Must Act Now to Prevent a World Cup Built on Abuse - another compelling story at the top,
Ireland’s law on abortion violates human rights - built around a “triptyque” quote from the Irish PM.
I am very happy with these, but I find none of them perfect. (For me the perfect op-ed grabs the reader’s attention with a powerful story, links it to a wider problem with a compelling statistic, then points out who is responsible for the situation and what needs to change.)
What a classy way to handle a petty, aggressive critique: rather than hit back, deliver a grander message.

Are very straight forward question to a snarky question. I feel the answer could have been a little more memorable though.
Hospitals are not targets. Patients are not targets. Doctors are not targets. Schools, bread lines and market places are not targets.
Powerful op-ed from MSF about hospital bombings in Syria. Simple delivery of the facts up top before a powerful explanation of what’s at stake at the end

How do you deal with a very aggressive and blatantly antagonistic interviewer?
Bill Gates talks about the Apple-FBI clash over iPhone security. He rolls back stories that he supports the FBI, but tries to keep on the fence in the debate, and makes a rather incoherent point about bio-terrorism at the end.
The US air bombing on a Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan is a violation of basic human rights and against international law
Moscow denies it is hitting civilian areas - but rescue workers, and footage obtained by Sky News, suggests this is not the case.
How candidates use the art of storytelling to help swing elections.
"Successful campaigns tell a story.“ Every NGO campaigner in the world should watch this. NGOs so often start campaigns based on important issues but without a tangible story. As the video says, they lack a clear: threat, opportunity, fear or hope.

Last week I received an email from Henry Gomez, head of marketing and communications at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, objecting to a column I’d written the previous week. In it I’d repeated the advice his boss, Meg Whitman, gave to an audience at
How not to impress a reporter!
There is a maxim in creative writing: “Kill your darlings”. Sometimes the clever line you are very proud of risks overshadowing the wider message you want people to remember. In this case, John McDonnell makes a strong point that should have wide appeal: the government inviting other states to take over British assets. Instead of letting his point sink in, he takes out the Little Red Book. Result: the media portray it as a blunder, and his original message is forgotten. Sometimes its better to keep it simple.
