Theres a very good chance that someone else has had this idea but uhhhhh au where the events in knd aren't real and they're just some elaborate make-believe roleplay between the adults and kids. The villains are now just a really big friend group/acting troupe/collection of LARP fanatics who run this little thing where they babysit kids in hopes of giving children better childhoods. I havent decided on whether it's just some elaborate side hustle or a small grassroots organization or some Daddy Daycare bullshit. Im not the au making type so idk how much ill develop this.
In most of my hcs for base KND, I tend to make the kids more "well-adjusted" while the adults are much more unstable as a result of holding onto grudges for way too long, and exploring how they come to terms with the fleeting nature of youth. Here it's mostly reversed: most of the villains are people who were in tough situations as children and have recovered pretty well (for the most part) while the KND operatives are dealing with the difficulties the villains had as children (abuse, illness, foster care, etc.). It's mostly lighthearted though despite the hardships everyone goes through.
Havent thought of much for sector v (i am very biased towards the villains lol) but ill list some rough ideas so far:
Nigel is hospitalized for an uncertain amount of time due to illness (something potentially fatal such as cancer), and is struggling with feeling incompetent as a result of being disabled. Abby has an even worse relationship with Cree (since she has no wacky weapons to fight against her, its all real life) and it has escalated to the point that her parents got divorced, separating the two sisters for good. Either that or Cree has been institutionalized in some fashion because of some vague awful event. Wally is in the foster care system and has been passed around due to his transgender identity and difficult behavior. He was likely given up because of the Beetles' frustration of raising him. Hoagie's father is oftentimes absent since he works for the military (like in my typical knd fanon) but he's also a little bit of a deadbeat. He also had an unhealthy relationship with Cree which contributed to the Lincolns' divorce. I dont know what to do with Kuki; she probably has a a more unhealthy relationship with her parents and/or coping with the loss of a family member.
Sector V are still basically friends, but due to these recent conflicts don't see each other as often as they used to, making the situation harder to cope with. They enjoy playing with the villains but the usual song and dance only helps so much, and the villains are trying to figure out ways to help sector V more while also tending their own mental issues.
Some additional stuff about the villains:
the villains are massive fucking geeks. They all have some kind of stupid nerdy hobby and you will definitely find them at your local convention.
Benedict/Father is the founder of whatever gig this is. Mr Boss isn't a part of the whole acting deal, but helps manage finances for the whole thing. Benedict is a nice guy and has a pretty good relationship with Monty, though his need to reach for approval gets the best of him sometimes (likely as a result of Bipolar disorder). If I'm gonna go with the side gig framing, he probably also works at a school.
I dont know what to do with the Delightful Children in this au but they are likely in a very rough patch, one even worse than what sector v are dealing with. Maybe it was partially caused by Benedict and they have a bad history with him, though Benedict hopes to fix his mistakes.
The adult villains and the Teen Ninjas have some weird rivalry going on, though it's probably one-sided (which side it is idk).
XXXL is not apart of the org or whatever, and is just some snowcone truck vendor who ends up getting a piece of the action while following xis usual route. Xe likes to participate in the children's games. Gives xer a chance to relive some old childhood dreams.
Fibb and Wink are just furries. Sometimes they take their suits while babysitting since the kids think they're cool. They're great friends with Lasso Lass.
The Interesting Twins are probably in some kind of volunteer/apprentice situation with the villain org. They're very passionate about acting and the org gives them a chance to get some improv experience.
Stickybeard owns one of those themed restaurants (pirate themed of course). There's probably live entertainment with actors and shit too. Robin Food owns a similar business that's across the street of stickybeard's establishment like some mr krabs plankton bullshit. The two bicker a lot. Maybe they're exes, who knows.
Common Cold used to be a part of the original LARP group, but eventually had to stop joining LARP sessions due to his health. He keeps in touch with Benedict and the others through DnD sessions. Cold would love to be a part of the org but is struggling to find what he could contribute.
Toiletnator is just a plumber. A very annoying plumber with no acting experience who wants to be a part of the org. The villains' hearts may be pure now but they still hate the fucking toiletnator.
Knightbrace had to give up his dentist dreams and ended up taking care of the family candy store instead. He also makes harsh noise music to cope with his OCPD.
