bug of the day

Found this spider sitting not far from a shell of its former self, on the underside of a lilac branch. iNat tentatively id'd it as genus Mimetus.

This little Dimorphic Jumping Spider (Maevia inclemens) was hanging out at the bug light earlier this month.

Found this small spider hiding under an oak leaf during a rainstorm. It appears to be a type of running crab spider (Philodromidae family).

I would be lying if I said I was not startled upon discovering this huuuuuge dark fishing spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) on top of my composting bin while walking around my yard in the wee hours last August...I might even have emitted a large yelp lol

Was out checking my bug light the other night because it was ridiculously warm during the day (80'F in October!). Unfortunately the moon was too bright for the bug lights to be active, but I did find this cute little sheetweb spider (Pityohyphantes sp.) on a shrub on the side of my house.

HAPPY ARACHTOBER!!! Please enjoy this adorable long grrl, who has acquired a large and rather gooey caterpillar dinner. Likely genus Tetragnatha.

Found this walnut caterpillar in the driveway, it was not in great condition so I gave it its Glamour Shots session and let it go by a small walnut sapling in my yard. The next day, in the same driveway spot, there were at least 5 more of them. They probably all came from the same nearby walnut tree.

Yes, even mosquitoes can be cool, or even *pretty*. This is Uranotaenia sapphirina, and it's so inconsequential, it does not really have a common name. iNaturalist calls it "sapphire-striped mosquito" so let's go with that!

I know this picture is screaming PINK MOTH but trust me, they blend into the foliage this time of year.
