Earwig and the Witch rules actually, we were all haters when it came out
I found a little earwig
Earwig And The Witch is underrated... but I get why.
It feels like it was meant to set up a trilogy or duology of a wider story with lore of Twelve Witches and Earwig's mother. Mind you, it would've been improved with at least a final act of Earwig meeting her mother and having at least an emotional conclusion in learning why she was abandoned.
As it is, I feel the movie gets by with it's CG animation lending itself to an interesting style. Of course, I understand why it was panned with how it didn't feel right with Studio Ghibli's previous output of 2D animation.
That in mind, I feel this experimental style still gives this film its own identity and brings out the best in the characters. Especially when it came to Earwig's cartoonish expressions.
I feel that they should've cut out Earwig's mother dropping her off at the start and coming back in the end. Keep the focus on the spunky orphan makes a new home learning magic. Maybe have her get them to make music again to reignite their happiness with the whole twelve witches stuff left for another possible movie.
