I think it’d be cool if the curse required one to a) confess their feelings and b) accept the answer they receive. It still puts a lot of pressure on the other person, but ultimately it’s up to the curse bearer to deal with their own emotions. Different characters might struggle more with one step or the other

That could lead to some cool plots too honestly, like.. Person A finally confesses and Person B reciprocates, but Person A still struggles to believe them. Or Person B doesn’t feel the same way, and Person A has to learn how to let these feelings go. Or someone fakes having hanahaki as a way to pressure someone into being with them, but ends up with real hanahaki when they refuse to accept the other person’s lack of reciprocation

Like, it’s generally portrayed as a horrible last resort, but you could spin it as a genuinely good gesture toward the person who isn’t reciprocating -- the ultimate “these feelings are my problem and even though emotionally I’m struggling to accept that, logicaly I know, so I will deal with it”

(Bc I think there could be a loophole in the acceptance idea where you accept the person has said no, and not try to change their mind, but still kinda hope they might change someday. I like the idea that this is a way for the hanahaki person to say “the way we are is good for me, now and forever, and I promise that won’t change”)

...or you could go full aro spite and trope subversion and say “yeah I’m a person who had surgery and now Cannot Love Ever, what of it?” and do a whole story to explore how society treats them and how they find meaning in life anyway and maybe have a Hanahaki Aro Support Group and a QPR subplot between two members.

Personally? I kinda think it would be fun to base it completely on the repressing-feelings and secrets bit and decouple love from the trope. You can get hanahaki whenever you’re swallowing down words you want to say, keeping a secret that burns you from the inside

If you find your friend throwing up flowers they might be in love -- or they might be hiding their desire to break up with their partner. Maybe they just really want to be friends with someone but they’re too scared to say so. Maybe they have a lot of bitterness toward a family member and the weight of all those words unsaid is making them vomit forget-me-nots.
