Ok, ok, question for my amazing writer mutuals. My fanfic divas, my emotional whump masters and all lovers of hurting what we love in fiction form... When you come up with something that feels truly diabolical that is unexpected to your own brain and feels to you to be particularly awful and devastating (though maybe that only to you and no one else will care), how do you assess whether it is too mean and too awful? Like without it the story wouldn't change fundamentally - it's not intergral to the plot, but it would add a punch to the plot... how do you assess if it is good, bad, indifferent and whether you should or shouldn't include it. Asking for a friend.
Personally, it usually depends a lot on the type of ending I want the fic to have. If the goal is to give the characters a happy ending, then I try to make sure that the added whump/angst isn't going to push the fic past the point where I would be able to give them a satisfying recovery arc.

stanning max verstappen is so hard because he makes what would be career defining drives look easy and pulls off impossible stunts like overcoming a 104 points deficit or winning 19 out of 23 races. and he does it so naturally and cleanly that third rate drivers fans think they can also do it because max easily did it, which means i have to always explain that no, actually, it's a max thing only and your guy will not be able to do it sorry

I've held back on going on a full-on rant about this for a while now, but at this point, I've just about had it with some of the bullshit from certain so-called "Max fans" on Twitter. We need to start gatekeeping who should even be allowed to call themselves Verstappies at this point because it is SO obvious that these people are just shameless glory hunters.
First things first, I know most of us want Max to leave Red Bull after this season. I also know that it's been frustrating to have to wait so long to receive confirmation of what his future plans are. But with these "fans", it's like every time Max says something that doesn't line up perfectly with their agenda, they all rush to jump down his throat. I've seen them spew the most unbelievably soulless vitriol, such as how "Max deserves the treatment he gets at Red Bull if he stays", as if their treatment hasn't included multiple car-related crashes that could very easily have been life-threatening because RBR have refused to fix anything with his car. I'm sorry, but if you think Max deserves any of that, there is no fixing whatever is wrong with you.
Also, Max has said nothing to indicate that he intends to stay at Red Bull next year anyway. He's not given solid confirmation of where he plans to be, period. Yes, he still speaks well of the team in interviews because, surprise, this is his literal JOB. Believe it or not, Max does in fact know how to be professional, and that means he can't exactly go around talking shit about his employer on live television no matter how much we all know they deserve it. But with these "fans", it's like every time Max doesn't open an interview by talking about how much he hates everyone at Red Bull and how he can't wait to be shot of them, they take it as confirmation that he plans to stay with the team for the next five years or something.
As if that wasn't enough, these people will actively root for Red Bull to build a shitty car for Max because they hope it will push him out of the team. And then when the team does exactly that and Max gets completely fucked over as a result because the RB22 decides it doesn't want him on the track anymore, they have the nerve to act like MAX was the problem.
In Austria, Silverstone, and now Hungary, Max suffered spins as a result of car-related issues, which you can clearly see from watching any of his onboards (and also just using common sense). Yet somehow, after each one, you had these fake ass "Max fans" immediately jumping to blame him for them. Then, when they were inevitably proven wrong, they tried to save face by saying that it "wasn't obvious" that it wasn't Max's fault (which, okay, but if you didn't know then why immediately assume the worst of him?) and that, apparently, we shouldn't just blindly defend Max the way other fans defend their drivers. Because I guess we're all competing in some sort of objectivity championship now.
Even worse, it's not even only one or two tweets either. No, these "fans" will SPAM tweets en masse calling Max washed, a bum, etc.
"Look at me, I'm not like OTHER Max fans; I actually know how to be OBJECTIVE and CRITICIZE MY DRIVER."
It's just completely pathetic. They're so desperate for validation from fans of other drivers that they're willing to throw Max under the bus to get it, and mind you it's not as if they're ever going to get it, so they're doing all of this for nothing. The only thing they're doing is inviting even more hate towards Max. And besides that, if they want SO badly to seem objective, you'd think they would at least put some effort into making sure the things they're criticizing Max for are actually true. But they never are, so not only do they come across as pick-mes, they also just look irreparably stupid.
the whole “max is constantly threatening to retire!!” discussion is so stupid and baffling i’m at a loss of words every time i see it. do people not know how to read. max isn’t using complicated words why is it so hard to understand what he’s saying
I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again, it’s also worth noting that the people who get on Max’s case for “always threatening to retire” are the same ones who would have you believe that Max isn’t actually all that important to F1. Like if you don’t think his presence in F1 matters in the grand scheme of things, why are you so obsessed with whatever his future plans may be?
