If there’s one positive to be taken from the weekend, it’s that Max has proven that he can in fact more than hold his own against top endurance drivers. He fought his way to the top in all of his stints, and the commentators themselves said that his performance was “nothing short of a masterclass”. A mechanical failure sucks, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that he once again proved why he’s one of the biggest legends in motorsport history.
And also, let me just say it was such a breath of fresh air to see how Max is treated in GT compared to F1. I honestly respect the hell out of the GT drivers because they actually carry themselves like real racers. Not once do you ever hear any of them moaning about how Max is “too aggressive”, “thinks he can do whatever he wants”, “should have gotten a penalty” or whatever because unlike certain bums in the so-called pinnacle of motorsport, they actually understand hard racing for what it is and that battles are meant to be won on track instead of with your mouth.

ferrari should prioritize lewis this and merc should prioritize kimi that, right. and here i thought you all had Strong Opinions about teams having #1 drivers and giving them advantage over their teammate 🤔
A hard to swallow pill for some people: “equal treatment” is always going to look like favoritism on the surface when there’s a clear deficit in skill between drivers.

I meant to have this out several hours ago, but unfortunately, I spent too long dodging my other responsibilities. Oh well.
Some points of note:
– The RB22 was once again behaving like a shitbox raised from the pits of hell. That in itself isn't a huge surprise; we knew coming into the weekend that Barcelona was going to be one of the worse tracks for Red Bull. What was a bit more concerning was the attitude the team sans Max and Isack had about it all, but if I start ranting about that now, we'll never get through the rest of this post.
– Isack lost the DM01 lottery this week at the start of the race which dropped him all the way to P14, but he had a strong recovery drive back to P6. Good on him, but this team genuinely needs to figure its shit out with these starts.
– All things considered, the tyre compound strategy for Max didn't seem too bad (I don't remember what Isack's strategy was and at this point I can't be bothered to check). I know some people were griping about it on Twitter, but honestly, I'm not sure it could have been planned much better. There's not much you can do when literally every compound is garbage.
– On a related note, I will unapologetically glaze Max once again. His tyre management was out of this world during the race. A high deg track with a car notorious for being a tyre muncher, and yet his lap times remained unbelievably consistent. If you were to show his lap times to someone who didn't watch the race, I genuinely do not think they would realize how bad the tyres actually were. It's one of those things that will be forgotten from this race by the broader FOM because it's Max Verstappen, and when it comes to him, the extraordinary becomes routine, but it deserves a shout-out nonetheless. Honestly, the entire weekend just highlighted how good he is when it comes to car control, especially considering...well, we'll get to that later.
– Kimi had his first retirement of the season, so I guess Toto decided it was his turn to have his car nuked. Lol. In all seriousness though, with the amount of luck he's had all year, something like this was bound to happen eventually. Also I can't lie, the fact that he DNFed almost immediately after passing George is incredibly fucking funny. I think he had a solid race overall up to that point, but if I'm being honest, I wasn't paying much attention to either of the Mercs until the final stint. I would have been curious to see if Kimi could have pulled enough of a gap over George to nullify the 5s penalty he got after the race for track limits, but it's a moot point now.
– We are now seven races into the season (nine if you count Saudi Arabia and Bahrain), and we have yet to have a race where all 22 drivers managed to finish. We had a grand total of seven retirements in Barcelona, and even though Alex Albon technically "finished", he didn't complete enough laps to be classified which I feel should basically count as a DNF in spirit. And this is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport or something.
– Alonso being outqualified by Stroll at his home race and then inadvertently becoming one of the catalysts for Hamilton to snatch his first race win since 2024 is both very shitty for him, and yet also incredibly on brand with how this year has gone. Stay tuned for two weeks from now, where we go to Austria to find out what horrors Fernando Alonso will experience next.
– Hulk...yeah, I don't even know what to say to that one except for that has to be one of the most bizarre DNFs I've ever seen.
– Hamilton won, which means Max's record-breaking streak of wins is safe for a little while longer. I was rooting a George win, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Whatever works, y'know? We're not out of the woods yet when it comes to protecting the streak, but at least the record-breaking win won't be at Zandvoort anymore.
– We need to have some uncomfortable conversations about Charles after this weekend because that was just horrid. Credit where credit is due, he had a good launch at the start and made a nice move around Oscar to slot into P6 behind Max, and I won't blame the DNF on him since that was caused by a mechanical issue, but as for everything else? Gag. He bottled quali completely of his own accord by going into the wall, and then during the race, he couldn't pass Max at all despite the RB22 having zero pace compared to the Ferrari on the first two stints, and even before his DNF on the final stint, Max was pulling out a gap over him. You can't even say it's just a one-off bad weekend because none of his races lately have been anything to write home about (I'll give him Monaco though, that one was fully on Ferrari).
– Speaking of drivers we need to have uncomfortable conversations about, what the hell was that in the final stint by George? I'm not trying to sound like a hater here, but that was a genuinely pathetic display of race pace. I know Lewis was fast, and maybe P2 was always going to be the maximum for George after the VSC, but how do you finish that far off the lead in that rocketship? It's too bad too, because up until that point, he was having a great weekend.
– And speaking of things that are just uncomfortable in general, the vibes from Mercedes after the race were...weird, to put it lightly. Why was there literally no one from the team at the podium celebration? Your driver just made the podium on his 100th race for your team; surely that's at least worth something. I get that the end result was disappointing for Mercedes, with Kimi having a mechanical DNF and George being unable to convert his pole to a win, but that whole sequence of events just made it seem like the entire team hates George or something.
– Finally, we're free from F1 for one week, and then we have to turn our attention to Austria, where Red Bull are bringing their next major upgrade package. Will the upgrades do anything to improve the car? Will we finally see hope that Max will get a win in 2026? Or will Max and Isack both get a DNS so Laurent Mekies can shut the hell up for once? Stay tuned for the next episode of this circus act, where we somehow learn everything and still don't know jack shit about anything.

Not sure why an all British podium is something ppl are celebrating? There are almost double the amount of British drivers (164) in F1 history than the next nationality (Italy, 99). The fact that it hasn't happened more is the really astounding thing.
It’ll be one of those things that gets overshadowed, but that was a fantastic performance by Max today. Considering how horrid the deg was for us all weekend, that was a masterclass in tyre management.

There’s a specific subset of 63 fans who like to imply that George is somehow intellectually superior compared to the rest of the grid because his English vocabulary is better than that of people who speak English as their second or third language.
I won’t say what word we could use to describe those types of fans, but I think we all know what that word would be.
Random thought, but something incredibly impressive about Max is that he makes the things he does look so easy to f1 fans. Like the recovery drives? the saves? All taken for granted.
Like I don't think lots of the other drivers are shit, but Max really makes it look easy which makes others trash on them. Like a good chunk of this has to be because they are being compared to Max.
Max will always be underrated because he's genuinely so impressive no one can give him the credit he's worth. He's truly the best of the best. We expect so much from him because he's given so much.

Mind you Red Bull used to fight for poles and wins, and now we just hope that our pace will be marginally less embarrassing than usual compared to the frontrunners.

The way RBR has been moving lately is so bizarre. Like this is not the Red Bull Racing I recognise. Where’s the hunger? The passion? The drive to do better no matter if the car is championship contending or not?
The statements from the technical team sound so self- complacent. It’s the same bullshit they regurgitate every weekend with hardly anything to show for it.
Also, I never expected Max and RBR to ever part on bad terms but it’s increasingly looking like that will be the case. Shouldn’t be surprised since no one who left RBR parted on good terms. But c’mon this is MAX. He has red bull running through his veins.
To come to Barcelona with upgrades and find that the team has made zero progress is so disheartening. If the fundamental philosophy of RBR is bad (that’s what it looks like) then I don’t really think we can compete near the top this year. It’s gonna be P7/P8 every weekend with another one or two surprise podiums depending on if other teams mess up or not.
I know the technical team isn’t responsible for dealing with the FIA, but it says a lot about the state of Red Bull that they’re willing to go to court for Isack over a podium that wasn’t even earned, yet when Max is doing everything he can to try to drag the shitbox they built for him into a semi-respectable position, it’s “oh well, it do be like that sometimes”.
The entire team apart from GP has treated Max like shit the entire season, and I’m not even referring to the car here. The media has been going after Max like a bunch of rabid dogs for months, and not once has Mekies done anything to stick up for his driver. Not that Max needs anyone to jump to his aid, but it’s the principle of the matter. They clearly don’t care if it looks like they don’t have his back, and if this is what they’re showing the general public, imagine how bad it is internally.
Quite frankly, Red Bull have zero right to be upset with Max in any capacity. I mean that with every fiber of my being. It could come out tomorrow that Max was cursing out the entire technical team, and I would say he’s 100 percent justified. They’ve done nothing but let him down all year. The fact that Max is still so gracious to them and continuously highlights all the hard work they put in despite all this speaks to the type of person he is.
At this point, I hope that if/when Max leaves, he gives the entire garage the middle finger as a parting gesture. He won’t unfortunately because he’s a better person than they are, but fuck them. They don’t deserve his respect or his loyalty.
So if they want to push Max out because of what I can only assume are their bruised egos, I say let them. Any other team on the grid would jump at the chance to have Max Verstappen drive for them, so let him go to a team that actually wants to win and that will make the most of his prime. Red Bull are nothing without Max, and sooner or later they’re going to learn that the hard way.
