Sounds about right. I'm still just... flabbergasted that a grown ass man could look at those photos and think they were legit.

You gotta remember that ACD was married to a medium, and he wasn't just a spiritualist he was one of the most popular and well-known spiritualists in the world. He was a bit of a figurehead for the religion.

Also! You gotta remember that for the time, spiritualism was the progressive, ostensibly science-based take on religion. This was the era of the-soul-as-bioradiation and animal magnetism that explicitly contrasted itself to the more "frivolous" and "magical" old religions. (which is coincidentally also a criticism that American protestants had of catholicism but I'm sure those ideas aren't related in any way /s)

Spiritualism shared a lot of cultural space with the pop-science of it's day. ACD was definitely more into it than most, but spiritualist sympathies were far more common than people really think. The jump in logic for ACD was definitely silly, but not unreasonable. It confirmed something he wanted to believe.

a lot of pieces of media will show characters catching fireflies with just their bare hands. in some cases they will just land on the persons fingers. to gently be placed inside of a jar..

for people who live in areas who don’t have fireflies, i want you to know that is not made up or exaggerated for those scenes. fireflies are really like that. they are slow and not cautious at all. while camping i would just walk up to one flying in the air and grab it. and it would sit on my hands like “oh ok.” they are my friends.
