Sure, you know how to self-flagellate, but do you know how to apologize? Saying "I'm a stupid idiot" is not the same thing as saying "I did something wrong."
People who want an apology pretty much never want to hear "I'm a stupid idiot." If someone is actually trying to get you to say you're a stupid idiot, it's not because it will make up for a mistake you made or harm you caused. It's because they want you to feel like a stupid idiot. People who care about you do not want you to feel like a stupid idiot and it hurts them when they see you putting yourself down in their name.
It's also a bad and manipulative tactic. When you've done something wrong that affects someone else and your response is "I'm a stupid idiot" they are then forced to comfort and reassure you even though they are the ones suffering from your mistakes.
Do not do this. Just say "I'm sorry" and then do your best to do better next time. That's all anyone wants.
It can be manipulative, but it's not always intentionally so. Some people just get very upset when they realize they fucked up and they berate themselves because they really do feel like a stupid idiot. Especially kids. Kids often get really upset when you tell them they did something hurtful.
The thing is, you're not forced to comfort or reassure anybody who's doing this, kid or adult. Maybe you feel compelled to, but you should probably try to avoid it. Because if this is a bid for reassurance, it just reinforces that self-flagellating is a viable method of getting that from you in the future. It's often better to say something like "I understand why you might feel that way, but I just want an apology."
