When Ortho had died, he was about five years old. Since becoming a humanoid, he's never had friends who were his age. Sure, in his robo-form, he was 16 years old, but he'd forever be stuck at five years old, playing with Idia before getting caught in the crossfire of a titan attack.
Having a friend who was his age ever really crossed his mind. I mean, he had no mind to begin with, but you get the point. So, having a little six-year-old suddenly get transported to Night Raven College was as much a surprise to him as everyone else in the school.
Everyone was ten years older than poor (y/n). Once they arrived at the school, all they did was wander. They weren't old enough to learn about the advanced lessons everyone else was learning, couldn't participate in after-school activities, and couldn't use magic. Even worse, they didn't have a caretaker. They only had that pesky cat Grim and his stinky tuna breath.
Ortho found (y/n) while looking for Idia. The young man was out somewhere looking for a cat, that was all Ortho knew.
(y/n) was chasing after Grim since he'd left the poor child alone in Ramshackle. Obviously, Grim had no idea how to deal with a child; he didn't have any parents or caretakers either, so how was he supposed to know?
The child accidentally bumped into Ortho's robotic leg, falling back on their butt. "Owie! What the hec--!"
"Oh, hello! Do you need any help?" the humanoid boy said sweetly to the child.
(y/n) looked up at Ortho with fear, but also excitement. Ortho put his hand out for the child to grab. (y/n) looked at the boy's hand like it was the Seven's gift to the Twisted Wonderland.
"Are you... a robot?" (y/n) shyly asked.
"Yes! My name is Ortho Shroud, and I'm a humanoid!"
"Whoa..." The child whispered under their breath. "So living, talking robots are real! Cool!!"
Ortho giggled at the child's words, "Maybe not living, but yeah, I love to talk!"
"Are you gonna take over the whole world?"
That made the humanoid deadpan. He was a bit unsure of what to say to the child without ruining their wild imagination. "Uhm... No. I am not going to take over the world. But my big brother might be able to. He made my robotic body, after all!"
"YOUR BROTHER MADE YOU??!! COOLLLL!!! Can I meet your big brother?" (y/n) exclaimed as they jumped up and down with their stubby legs.
"Yeah! I was going to find him anyway. Let's go!" Ortho cheered
(y/n) fiddled with the hem of their shirt shyly, pouting as if they wanted to say something really important but couldn't find the right words for it.
"Do you need anything, (y/n)?"
"Can I hold your hand, please? I'm a little scared of this place."
"Of course!" Ortho held his mechanical hand out to the small, pouting child.
He giggled as their eyes glittered with excitement. Automatically, Ortho warmed up his hand, making it feel more comfortable for the scared child as they wandered through the hallways on their way to find Idia and Grim.
From that day on, (y/n) and Ortho were often caught holding hands around the campus. It was so much bigger to (y/n) than it was to everyone else, and Ortho wanted to make sure that his new best buddy would never be scared as long as he was by their side!
