He never prayed until she laughed and even then, he never told her. But every night, he confessed to the skies, whispering half prayers. “Let her touch me like I am not ash.” “Let her smile like I am not ruin.” “Let me hold her and still be free.” She would bring him wine and ask him questions too soft to be dangerous, she never left her doors locked for him, and when she came to him crying, he would fall to his knees, not to beg but because he couldn’t bear to see her weep.
