Summary: Tommy canât stand the guys trying to get your attention anymore.
A/N: Angry Tommy makes me weak. Yelling Tommy makes me weak. Sorry, not sorry. Take this as a little Valentineâs Day present. I love you guysđ
"Where the fuck is Y/N?" Thomas Shelby asked the room, barging through the doors of the betting shop, hair disheveled and coat flying behind him.
"She went out with some fella about an hour ago, said she'll be back," Arthur responded looking up from his chair, an almost empty glass of whiskey in hand.
"What's wrong brotha, did something happen?" he continued observing Tommy's wild eyes.
"Yeh, yeh something's fucking wrong! She said she'll meet me at the Garrison an hour ago, but were is she now eh? Out with some bastard who what? Invited her? Where?" he yelled throwing his cap across the table and slamming his hands on the table.
âSheâs with Oliver,â Polly said blowing a stream of smoke from her black cigarette.
âJesus Christ,â Tommy muttered under his breath knowing exactly how much you disliked the guy. You had expressed to Tommy how rude you felt declining Oliverâs continuous invitations to go out with you. Apparently you had finally agreed to the man.
âFuck this,â Tommy recollected himself and left the shop as quickly as he came in.
***
You felt terrible for what you were doing. Betraying Tommy and Oliver at the same time. You promised youâd go out with Oliver a while ago but kept canceling because of business that came up with Thomas. It wasnât always business though. Youâd ask Tommy to create some sort of extravagant scenario that would act as a proper excuse for you to not be able to go out with Oliver.
But as far as Tommy goes, you thought heâd understand, as he knew the numerous times youâve asked him to be around you when there was a chance to run into Oliver. Tommy knew you preferred him over Oliver, right? That the reason you always wanted him to be around was because he was the one who made you feel safe and happy?
âSo, Y/N, Tommyâs been really pushing it these days hasnât he? Always working, day n night?â Oliver said as you walked together down an emptier street near the Garrison.
âWell... yea but business is business. It doesnât sleep, canât rest. Itâs always daytime somewhere,â you explain getting irritated that he was directing an insult towards your boss.
âHe shouldnât be working you like that, Y/N. Does that man have no respect towards women?â
You stayed silent knowing very well Tommy treated you like a Queen and listened to every word youâve ever uttered. Awake and when you were asleep.
âHonestly, why do you stay to work for him? That is no man who will help you in your future. Heâs wasting your time Y/N,â Oliver clicked his tongue and looked down at his feet sinking through the dirty gravel on the street.
âLetâs have a drink,â you suggested looking up towards the pub. Your own safe place. Oliver nodded and you headed in as he held the door open to you. You didnât like having the attention of other men around you, other than Tommy. God when would this be over. Hopefully after a drink and a smoke heâll decide that this gathering was enough for the day. You weren't exactly engaging or laughing along with all of Oliverâs jokes anyway. At least thatâs what you thought. People always told you you seem like an angel before figuring out your truth, years later when you finally let them in. Maybe you were being too nice to him and you didnât even notice. Why didnât you just say no the first time he asked you out?
You seated yourself at one of the wooden tables near the center of the pub, by the booths. Ordering a whiskey for himself and a gin for you, Oliver began conversing you once again.
âI always see you here,â he says trying to catch your eyes as you tried to look everywhere else but his own.
âYea, I frequent the Garrison when I have time,â you agreed with a nod.
âBut you never invite me.â
Well isnât that enough for you to take a hint?
âThe Shelbyâs take me after work to cool off.â you say, which wasn't a lie. Every other day Arthur would drag you along with everyone else to his pub.
âWhy canât you come with me?â
âWell Iâm here arenât I?â
Just then Tommyâs familiar cologne wafted over the space as he pulled a chair from the neighboring table and roughly skid it towards your table. He sat himself forcefully between you and Oliver resting his one elbow on the table and his other hand on his knee.
âDonât worry Mr. Shelby, I just wanted to take out Y/N this afternoon. Iâll bring her back to work,â Oliver faked his confidence in front of your boss.
Tommy cleared his throat, his eyebrows still raised from the moment he sat down.
âYeh?â He cocked his head, then a moment later closed his eyes and pulled out a cigarette.
âIâm sure you wouldâve brought her back to me knowing all the work I make her do,â he laughed at himself placing the cigarette between his lips and clicking his lighter alive. He hollowed out his cheeks as he sucked in his first drag and blew it out in Oliverâs face. You didnât know what it was but something about the way Tommy was acting was incredibly attractive to you.
âYouâre a bad man Mr. Shelby,â Oliver shook his head. âLet the lady enjoy her life aye? You canât just string along every living woman with your bloody awful family. You're gonna strip her of her future, do you take pleasure in that? .. bastard...â
Hearing him speak was making your blood boil and you could feel your hands itching to tip the table over in Oliverâs direction.
Tommy leaned back in his chair and breathed out another whisp of smoke, waving it in the air nonchalantly.
âGo on, carry on like Iâm not here,â he nodded towards you and Oliver. You clenched your jaw trying not to smile as you watched Tommyâs amused expression and glinting eyes trace over the other man. Oliver sighed and downed the rest of his glass.
âWhy do you listen to him when youâre not at work Y/N?â Oliver asked you bringing you back to the conversation.
âBecause I choose to,â you simply state and shrug.
âYes but why?â Oliver pressed on, agitation growing on his voice.
You looked over at Tommy who was already looking at you and waiting for your response. His eyes seemed brighter all of a sudden and his lips never looked so inviting in front of the almost stranger sitting across from you. All you wanted was to climb over his lap and kiss him. Escape all questions and just kiss the devil who drove you home every night. The one who yelled and screamed when you werenât around but sat and listened when you were. The one who couldnât sleep at night but could when you were in his arms at night.
Tommy knew, he knew very well what you wanted. Just as he always did. He wanted you just the same. But he waited to see what you would do to answer Oliverâs question.
You shook your head and looked back at Oliver. âItâs just a matter of formality. He is my boss at the end of the day.â Tommy smirked as an array of very informal thoughts of you ran through his head.
Oliver finally turned his attention to Tommy who he was trying not to address directly since he came in.
âDo I need your permission to go out with your employees Mr. Shelby?â He hissed and grit his teeth.
Tommy looked ahead into the distance and nodded with a frown on his lips but his eyes were laughing.
âYea, cause sheâs not just a fucking employee,â he chuckled and got up from his chair and placed his cap on from his pocket.
âCmon Love,â he reached out his hand in front of you. You took it exhaling at the familiar feeling of warmth from his skin. The moment you stood he snaked his arm around your waist and pulled you close to the side of his taller frame.
âWeâve got work to do,â he told Oliver as he leaned down and kissed your forehead.
âO fuckin hell,â Oliver called out cursing at Tommy.
âFuck off,â Tommy snarled waving his arm at Oliver and pulling you away.
***
When you walked out of the Garrison you impatiently escaped from Tommyâs grasp. His eyes widened at the feeling of you getting away but you quickly turned back to him, pulling his face down with your small hands and crashed your eager lips on his. He smiled into your kiss before placing his hands over your cheeks devouring you into him.
Eventually, you pulled away to catch your breath but kept your eyes trained on his.
âYouâre a bad man, Mr. Shelby,â you teased watching him lick his lips and roll his eyes.
âAnd I do bad things,â
You nodded pressing your thumb to his lip, enjoying the tight grip he held you with.
âDo bad things to me,â you whispered as he stared through the barrier of your eyes into your soul. The only thing keeping you from collapsing was his arms holding you up.
âI have no problem doing that,â he smirked pulling you down the street.
summary steve and reader take on the fair per her request (2.4k)
content & warnings best friends to lovers, fem!reader, set during season 3, first kiss, smartypants steve, whole lotta dialogue, just fluff though (i think)
a/n gosh this took forever to write. s3 steve holds a special place in my heart
Upon entry to the now-empty Scoops Ahoy, youâre greeted by Steveâs friendly smile as he waves you towards where he stands behind the counter.
You have a plan. Youâre going to ask Steve on a date. Youâre fed up with waiting for him to make a move, though, you didnât know if he reciprocated your feelings. The mere notion that heâd turn you down had you sweating and shaking before you even spoke.
So, after a lot of coaxing and convincing from the one and only Robin, you mustered up the courage to come in after closing and make your move.
âHi, Stevie. Nice hat,â you say, tugging on your shorts nervously. âHowâs it going? Smooth sailing, I trust?â
It wasnât unlike you to reference his sailor costume and silly hat in your everyday speech. While it was amusing to you, heâd always rush to fire an insult back at you, primarily revolving around the tacky uniform you wore when you worked at the theater. So, in the end, you were even.
âHar har, youâre a real comedian,â Steve returns sourly, though the grin on his face is enough to tell you he isnât all that annoyed. âWhatâs crackinâ with ya?â
âNothing, really. Just thought Iâd visit.â You wrinkle your nose at a sudden, putrid smell wafting in the air. âUh, whatâs that smell?â
âItâs canned tuna,â he responds, lowering his voice. âDid you know Robin eats cold tuna right out of the can? Gross, right?â
âOh, thatâs totally gross.â You feign a gag. âThatâs⌠wow. Ew.â
âRight? Thatâs what Iâve been saying. Thereâs a microwave in the back room, too, but she says itâs âbetter cold.â I think thatâs total, utter bogus, âcause ew.â Steve glances over his shoulder, then back at you as he leans forward on his elbows, settling on the counter. âBeen telling her to stop â some kid came back in today and asked me why his ice cream tasted fishy.â
âYou know I can hear you two, right?â Robinâs voice sounds from the back room, âDonât hate on it âtill you try it!" She slides the partition open ever-so-slightly, and, realizing what youâre about to ask, winks at you and shoots a brief thumbs up before returning to her tuna.
You shake your head, disregarding her comment. âHey, Stevie. Itâs the Fourth of July tomorrow,â you state plainly.
He shoots you a quizzical look. He obviously knows that tomorrow is the Fourth of July â the mayor wouldnât let anyone forget about the special, never-done-before firework show and fair he was behind. âI know. Whatâs going on tomorrow? You up to anythinâ special?â
âNo, nothing in particular.â You were nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Steve, being one of your closest friends, noticed this the second you stepped into the ice cream parlor. The way your fingers twitched and the thin sheen of sweat that glistened on your chest and forehead was the telltale sign that you were wound up.
He tried to blame it on other circumstances. You couldâve had some coffee earlier and it was really hot outside even at night and the fluorescent lighting overhead wasnât exactly flattering.
What were you so nervous about? More importantly, what were you hiding?
âUh, something going on?â He chuckles lightly, masking the worry growing within him.
âI was just wondering,â you get out, casting your gaze downwards and wringing your hands together. âif you wanted to go to that thing. The one the mayorâs been blabbinâ about. The⌠fair. With me.â
âYeah, sure. Could I ask, though, whyâre you so worked up about it?â He prods, taking off his hat and tossing it aside. It was totally blowing his best feature (not that he had anyone to impress right now.)
âHuh? Iâm not nervous, what do you mean?â
He noticed. Of course he noticed.
âCâmon. Are you asking me to go because you scored a date that you want to back out of but you donât wanna break the poor guyâs heart so youâre going to play it off as a friend thing instead?â
âStevie, what the hell are you even talking about? That was⌠oddly specific.â
"Okay, if it's not that, l take it you're asking me on a date?"
You freeze, your features contorting animatedly. You didn't expect him to be so straightforward with you.
He laughs good-naturedly, your comical expression a dead giveaway that he was right. âI'd love to go out with you, silly. What, you were afraid I'd say no? I wouldnât ever pass up on the chance to spend time with my favorite girl. â
To say you were ecstatic was an understatement. You almost jumped for joy right there, but instead resolved to checking your watch. âOkay, cool! Iâll see you⌠tomorrow. Uh, would you look at the time? Iâd better go. Itâs super late.â With that, you flee out of the store and into the empty mall, hot pink lights illuminating your retreating figure.
Steveâs voice dies in his throat. âItâs only 7-⌠never mind.â Youâre already out of earshot.
Robin emerges from the back room as soon as your footsteps fade into the distance, a stick of unwrapped gum in her hands.
âYour favorite girl, hhhhuh?â Much to his dismay, she breathes her tuna breath directly into Steveâs face.
âOh, gross, Robin!â He chokes, shoving her away and covering his nose with his hand. âWhatâd you do that for? Your breath smells like tuna!â
Robin shrugs, the two of them coming out from behind the counter to watch you escape into the parking lot. âBecause youâre so obviously into her, dingus. Just make your move. It canât go wrong.â
âIâm so not into her,â he responds with a huff. âSheâs way out of my league. I think she has a thing for that Elijah guy that she works with.â
Robin only rolls her eyes and pops the stick of gum into her mouth.
When Steve pulls up to your house the following evening, he makes his presence very well known by honking his horn until you finally appear at your doorstep. Your jacket is falling off of your shoulders and youâre not yet wearing your shoes when you finally slide into the passengerâs seat beside him.
âTook you long enough,â he remarks, bringing his wrist up to glance at the time. âTwo whole minutes. I bet the award of slowest to get ready would go to you.â
You gasp, your hands coming to rest on your heart. âYouâre so impatient. I wasnât even that late.â You pull your socks all the way up your ankles, then, thanks to your seatbelt, tie your beat-up converse into awkward bows.
Thankfully, the drive from your house to the fairgrounds wasnât long and everyone was already there, which only backed Steveâs claim that you took ages to get ready. He gave you an earful about being on time for the entire duration of the car ride.
âWeâre not late, everyone else is just early,â you say matter-of-factly as you arrive, slamming the car door behind you. âI was two minutes behind. Two, Stevie. You can count that high on one hand.â
âRight. Suuure,â he says hotly, rounding the side of his BMW to where you stood near the trunk. âSee this parking? See how far away we are? Youâll probably have to carry me back to the car later.â
âStop it, you big baby.â You grab his arm, dragging him to where the neon lights lit up the night sky. âItâs, like, a 30 seconds walk.â
â36,â Steve corrects you when you pass the gates into the fair. â36 seconds. You were wrong.â
âTomayto, tomahto. Iâm gonna get tickets,â You say as you fish for your wallet in your pocket. âAnd stay here or youâll get lost.â
As much as Steve teased you, he was genuinely happy to be there with you. You were so happy-go-lucky â that was what he loved about you most. But he loved everything else about you, too. He found it so endearing, the way you were able to strike up an easy-breezy conversation with the man selling tickets and cracked a joke or two just to make this random guyâs night a little bit better.
You return moments later, your pockets stuffed and overflowing with rows of orange tickets. Steveâs jaw drops at the sheer amount you have, quickly inquiring, âHow much money did you just spend on tickets?â
âDonât worry about it,â you return, intertwining your fingers (in a way that felt all-too-romantic) as you lead him deeper into the fairgrounds.
You weave your way through the endless stream of people, Steveâs fingers tightly clutching yours so as to not lose you in the neverending crowd. You stop abruptly in front of the game where you knock tin cans over with a ball, causing Steve to crash into your back.
âStevie, do you think you could win this?â You ask, gesturing towards the workers manning the game.
âNo, probably not,â he responds earnestly, âThese games are rigged, babe. Iâve never seen someone win. Ever.â He seems unfazed by the nickname, but you almost melt into a puddle on the grass beneath you.
âOkay,â you breathe, barely audible over the crowd, âI want to try, though.â
Steve only shrugs, releasing his death grip on your hand. You hand 3 tickets over to the man standing in the booth in exchange for 4 baseballs. You try, to no avail, to knock the tin cans over â not because you didnât throw hard enough, your aim was just terrible. Steve stood beside you the whole time, laughing at your weak attempts to beat a rigged game.
âLet me try,â he demands at last, âIâm sure I can beat it if itâs not, yâknow. Unbeatable.â
âI bet you could.â You drop the ball into his outstretched palm. Then, hesitantly, you rest your hand on his bicep and give it a firm squeeze. âYeah, youâre real strong. I have faith in you.â
Steveâs thankful for the darkness of the night concealing the pink blush that spreads up his neck and into his cheeks at your touch. Winding up, he throws the ball as hard as he can and, to his (and your) surprise, knocks the stack over.
âWow,â he says. âI thought it was rigged.â
The man, who also looks shocked at his apparently impressive feat, asks in a chipper tone what prize he wants. Steve gestures towards the giant panda hanging from the roof of the stand and hands it over to you, brandishing it with a half-assed bow and saying, âFor you, mâlady.â
âOh, thank you, my darling,â you return, throwing your hand over your forehead. âWhat ever would I do without you?â
âProbably not win a panda.â He takes your free hand and drags you towards the other games, and, with newfound confidence, claims, âIâve got a good feeling about all of these. Iâll win you all the prizes you want, you hear? Every single one.â
After a solid hour of Steve playing the games, he decides that the ones he didnât win were rigged and that heâs unbeatable at the ones he did. So, with an armful of new stuffed animals, you allow him to guide you to the food stands for some classic fried snacks.
His eyes settle on a funnel cake stand and he instantly makes a beeline (with you in tow) towards the short line in front. With your funnel cakes safely secured, you suggest going to where a crowd began to gather to watch the fireworks.
You can practically see a lightbulb flick on above his head.
âWhat if I know a better spot to watch âem?â He asks slyly, taking your arm this time since your hands were full and leading you to where the ferris wheel towered over the fairgrounds. Youâre promptly stopped by the operator, though, who claims that itâs âout of order.â But, you see Mrs. Wheelerâs updo peeking over the back of the seat from where you and Steve stand, and youâre struck with a genius plan.
âSteve,â you whisper. âI have a plan.â
Thankfully for the two of you, the man operating the ferris wheel wasn't very attentive to his ride and had his back turned as he smokes a cigarette. You make a run for it as the ferris wheel powers up and, with all the force you could muster, jump into one of the carriages as it moves on its path upwards.
Youâre met with angry shouts from the operator, but you suspect he isnât paid to care enough and youâre already too high up for him to really do anything about.
âThat was a good plan,â compliments Steve as youâre whisked up above the treeline. âA superb plan, actually. Good thinking.â
You grin at him and drop your collection of stuffed animals to your feet, taking small bites of your funnel cake as you bask in the moment. You fall silent, wind rustling in the trees and messing up your hair. You pull your jacket tighter around yourself and scoot into Steveâs side, seeking the warmth he emits like heâs a human furnace.
âPenny for your thoughts?â Steve breaks the silence thatâd settled between you when the seats stopped moving at the top, slinging his arm around your shoulders. âYouâre quiet.â
You shift in your seat with your legs tucked under you, turning to face him. âNo, nothing. Iâm just happy. I like it here. With you.â
âIâm happy too,â he murmurs. âIâm really happy. I like being with you.â
âYeah?â
âYeah.â
And in that moment, he looks so beautiful with the lights below hitting his familiar face from all the perfect angles. He smiles at you and you canât help but notice the faint laugh lines in his cheeks and the way his skin crinkles at the corner of his eyes and you know this is where youâre meant to be.
Then, finally, he leans in and captures your lips the sweet, gentle kiss you'd been dreaming of. Fireworks erupt in the background, mirroring the own that go off in your heart.
The taste of powdered sugar from his funnel cake lingers on your lips for the rest of the night.

a/n: i leave u all with my last little gift of the week, a new light christmas! hope u all have a great holiday season! wishing everyone love and light this time of year <3
âCan my big, strong, hot boyfriend please come help me unload the car?â
Rafe emerges on the front stoop of your home soon enough, padding through the front door you left open when you called for him, looking very perplexed and wearing socks with his flip flops. âWhat did you even buy?â
âTarget was having a sale on their Christmas stuff and I might have blacked out,â you explain, throwing open your trunk. âSee?â
âOh my god,â Rafe deadpans, taking in the amount of bags in your trunk. âBabe, did you buy the entire store?â
âI actually went light,â you shrug. âBecause my mom set aside some of the old decorations theyâre getting rid of for us to use, remember? And I tried to buy stuff that was kind of timeless so it would fit that whole vintage vibe.â
Rafe furrows his eyebrows, then turns to load up with bags nonetheless, leaving you only two of the lighter bags to carry yourself. âSure, sounds good.â
âWhen do you have time to decorate?â you ask, unwinding your scarf and hanging it on the rack by the door. âI was thinking we could start tonight.â
âWe?â
âYeah, Rafe. We,â you continue, rifling through the bags to find the monogrammed stockings you bought. âCould put on a movie andâooh, you should make those really good spiked coffees you always make. I bought peppermint extract for my baking but we can use that to make them Christmassy.â
âOkayâyeah, I just⌠so this is like a whole event, huh?â
His sketchy tone is what makes you finally turn around and face him in the living room. Heâs got his hands tucked into his pockets, observing the decorations with caution. âI mean, itâs decorating for Christmas.â
âI just didnât realize Christmas was such a big deal for youâdid you buy new pillows? We have to change out our pillows?â he asks, finally searching through some of the bags on his own.
âDo you not like them?â
âNo, itâs fine, sweetheart. Really,â Rafe assures. He tears a red pillow with white stitching reading âjingle all the wayâ out of the bag, setting it on your couch and throwing the plain pillow that occupied the couch before it out of sight. âSee, boom. Beautiful. Itâs officially Christmas now.â
âRafe,â you say. âWhatâs going on?â
âNothing,â he refutes. You drop the string of garland you were holding and cross your arms, giving him your most stubborn look until he sighs. âItâs just more than Iâm used to. The decorations and everythingâthis is new for me.â
âDidnât you do this with your family?â
You regret the question as soon as you ask it, but sometimes you just forget that things are different for Rafe. âNot really.â
You donât press him any further, just coming to stand in front of him, the mistletoe you bought in the dollar section hidden behind your back until youâre right in front of him. âWell. Do you wanna help me this year?â
He looks up when he sees you holding something over him, rolling his eyes once he sees what it is. Rafe leans into kiss you, pulling back after a moment to answer.
âHow could I say no to that?â
â
Rafeâs approach to the holidays was officially starting to bother you. When you asked him what his favorite Christmas movie was, heâd shrugged and said âUm, I dunno. Maybe that one with the ugly little clay people that they used to play on channel three when we were kids?â
He was extremely confused when you wanted to actually go cut down a real tree out in the mountains on a tree farm, wondering why you hadnât just bought one at the store along with all of the other decorations. Youâd explained that it has to be real because the house has to smell like Christmas, and heâd again shrugged. Before slightly cheering up at the fact that he got to saw down his own tree, carrying it proudly into the house when you got home. That had made you smile a little bitâyou hoped he was starting to get into it.
But then heâd just turned bright red when you asked if he had any of his own Christmas decorations to put up, presenting a singular Frank Sinatra Christmas record and nothing else. And you didnât dare mention it, but decorating the tree with all of the personalized ornaments your parents had kept for you over the years while Rafe had zero of his own had been completely awkward. He tried to shrug it off and help you move around the ornaments and tinsel you did have to cover the bare spots of the tree, but you still felt horrible over the entire thing.
âRafe, theyâre your sisters. You have to get them gifts,â you say in exasperation, rubbing your temples as the two of you went through your Christmas shopping list.
âY/n/n, listen to me. Theyâre not gonna buy me gifts either, weâve never done that,â he explains. âMy parents take care of us, and thatâs all we need.â
âWell, I already bought Sarah those Birkenstocks sheâs been wanting and Wheezieâs eyeshadow palettes are in the mail. So.â
âThen why did youâbaby.â
âBecause, itâs Christmas. You buy things for the people you love,â you say. âOr you can make a gift if this is like, a consumerism thing.â
âDo we have to get them for our friends, too? Like, all of them?â
You donât want to tell him that youâd taken care of all of your own friends already, their gifts bought weeks ago and sitting in your closet waiting to be wrapped. âWell, Secret Santa covers Topper. And Kelce and I do gifts every year, soâŚâ
âSince when?â Rafe wonders, his face screwing up.
âSince forever. He bought me these slippers two years ago, look,â you say, propping your feet up on the coffee table.
He huffs. âWell I wouldnât wanna put my name on a gift for your bestieâoh, fuck. Do we have to get John B a gift, too?â
âWell, dating Sarah for what, three years now? And weâre older than him and we have full-time jobs. And heâs gonna be there on Christmas, right? Yup.â
âFuuuck,â he whines. âWhy did I never realize how much work all of this is?â
âBecause your step-mom has probably been taking care of all of this behind the scenes for your family for years. You can put your name on my Kelce gift, so that oneâs done.â
âOh, no, no, no. I wanna see the look on his fuckinâ face when I have a gift for him and heâs empty handed,â Rafe says, smirking and taking your laptop from you, going to search for his own gift.
âWow, way to get into the holiday spirit. I love the spite.â
âI try.â
Your phone beeps and you start gathering your things, Rafe looking at you with a pout when he sees your jacket on. âWait, where are you going? I thought we were Christmas shopping?â
âI am. Going to the mainland,â you say, collecting your purse. âSarah said sheâs on her way.â
âWait, Sarah?â
âYeah, she asked me to come.â
âCan youâdid you guys invite Wheez? I donât⌠I donât want her to feel left out,â he worries.
âRafe,â you tut, your hand coming to rest on the side of his face. âShe was already going. They just asked me to come with them.â
âReally? I like that,â he decides, tugging you down by your scarf for a goodbye kiss.
âMe too.â
â
You treated Rafeâs sisters to a late lunch on the mainland after youâd all three shopped yourselves sillyâwell, Rafe treated all three of you, because when he asked why you were still gone heâd sent over enough money to cover the entire meal.
âSo do you guys hate Christmas, too? Or is that just your scrooge of a brother?â you sighed, making the two girls across from you giggle.
âRafe doesnât hate Christmas,â Sarah says. âItâs just not a big deal in our family.â
âHe told me that you guys donât even decorate?â
âRose does,â Wheezie supplies, pushing some food around on her plate. âBut sheâs pretty intense about it.â
âYeah, we donât get to help,â Sarah laughs. âFull interior decorator mode.â
âAh,â you nod. Leaving it at that, at least until Wheezie excuses herself to the restroom and you realize Sarah hasnât taken her eyes off of your face ever since you brought up the topic.
âWhatâs going on with him?â
âNothing, Sarah. Itâs just⌠I dunno. Rafe doesnât seem into it at all,â you say, fiddling with the straw in your iced tea. âItâs like pulling teeth. He didnât even know how the advent calendar workedâhe opened day 22 yesterday because he was hungry.â
âI think for Rafe, itâs different?â she wonders softly. âThings are always different when it comes to him, just with my dad and work. The holidays are busyâall those parties and the networking, you know he hates that shit. So he just doesnât have much interest in the fun stuff.â
You bite your lip as you nod, never having thought about it that way. âThanks, Sarah.â
âDonât tell him I told you that,â she warns. You cross your heart and she rolls her eyes, and you realized youâd really missed her when she was away at college for the fall term.
âYou know I wonât. But thank you,â you repeat. âAs a token of my gratitude, I feel inclined to tell you that Rafe got both of you gifts this year.â
Her eyes widen.
âWhat? Why? Since when does he do that?â You give her a deadpan look, pointing at yourself, and she groans in frustration. âWould you stop making my brother perfect? For like, five seconds?â
âWhatâs going on?â Wheezie says, sitting down at the table again.
âYou guys have to buy Rafe a Christmas gift this year,â you tell her, waving at the waiter for the check.
âNo,â Wheezie groans. âWe have to circle back to the Patagonia store now, donât we?â
â
Blythe came to spend the holidays in the Outer Banks with Topper this year, which was enough of a reason for your friend group to rent a cabin in the snow for the weekend before Christmas. Kelce bemoans his perpetual spot as the fifth wheel but comes anyway, saying he reserves the right to bring someone home from the one, singular bar in the mountain town, with no ribbing from any of you.
So you load up the car with enough alcohol for twice the amount of time youâll be there and all of your cutest snow outfits, kicking Rafe out of the passenger seat when you pull up to Topperâs parentsâ house for the caravan.
âWhat?â
âBlythe and I are driving together,â you remind him. âGo get in the car with the boys.â
âCâmon, what?â he whines. âTheyâre gonna make me sit in the backseat and you know my knees get sore.â
âCameron,â Blythe says, ripping his door open. âGood to see you, merry Christmas. Get out of my seat.â
âMerry Christmas, Blythe,â he grumbles, offering her his seat when he finally gets out. He motions for you to roll down the window when he comes around to the driverâs side, leaning in for a kiss. âDrive careful, alright? Iâll put on your snow chains at the rest stop.â
âWeâll probably get there first, Iâll wait for you,â you promise. He narrows his eyes.
âUh, weâre definitely gonna get there faster.â
You peek around Rafe to look at where Topper and Kelce are bickering over how to fit the last sled into the trunk. âRafe, I know youâre not challenging me to a race in the snow.â
âNo,â Rafe warns. âDrive careful, I mean it.â
âAlright, dad,â you tease, making Blythe groan next to you.
âEw, you too,â she says. âRafe, go away.â
âSee you up there,â he nods, kissing your cheek one more time before heading off to his friends. You laugh as you watch him snatch the sled out of both of their hands where theyâre fighting over it, fitting it in seamlessly.
You donât wait for them to figure out seating arrangements, opting to get an early start on the drive so you and Blythe can stop at Starbucks for Christmas drinks and maybe still have time to pull over and take cute pictures when you first hit the snow.
âHowâve you liked Christmas in the Outer Banks so far?â you ask once the two of you have left the main strip of town. Blythe huffs a sigh and you throw her a glance.
âGood, itâs good. I missed Topâmissed all of you. His family is just so intense,â she complains. âAnd itâs fun, but itâs a lot.â
âSee, I have the opposite problem. I think Iâm the Topper,â you say. âRafe doesnât wanna do anything.â
Blythe laughs. âWould you like to trade? Weâve watched Elf at least three times and Iâve been here for less than a week. And I think his mom wants us to go caroling.â
âThatâs not fair,â you whine. âWhy donât I have a simp boyfriend?â
She laughs again, louder this time. âYouâre joking right? âMake sure you drive careful, sweetheart.â âOh, donât bother your pretty little hands putting on your own snow chains, sweetheart.â âLet me ride in the car with you because I canât stand two hours spent apart from you, sweetheart.ââ
âAlright, enough,â you mumble, your cheeks burning as you pay attention to the drive. âI see your point. I just wish he was having fun, itâs our first Christmas living together and he just doesnât seem into it at all.â
âHave you tried talking to him about it?â
âWhy would I do that?â
â
Loose lips get you in the end. After a day of Rafe walking off to find better service for a phone call when everyone is building a snowman, missing out on making mulled wine with you and Kelce because he was watching the game in the living room, you finally snap when he doesnât put on the matching ugly sweater you bought him.
âRafe. Why?â
âWhat?â
âWhereâs your sweater?â you ask, tugging on the plain black shirt heâs wearing.
âOh. Um,â he mumbles, adjusting his grip on his beer, his thumb nail peeling off the label. âIt was itchy. And I donât like that the bells make noise whenever I move.â
You certainly didnât skip out on the mulled wine, pushing him back into the bedroom the two of you had claimed and ignoring any jabs from your friends. âOkay, Iâm not doing this anymore. What is going on with you?â
âWhat do you mean? Nothingâs going on,â he says, but his eyes give him away.
âAm I bothering you with all of this?â you ask, motioning to his discarded sweater on the bed. âYou look miserable.â
Rafe groans, dropping his face into his hands where he sits at the end of the bed. âIâm sorry.â
That tugs on your heart strings and you feel bad you were getting a little testy, sitting beside him and putting your hand on his back. âAbout what, baby?â
âI just donât know how to do any of this stuff. I donât know the songs or the movies, I donât have any of the fun traditions that you guys and all of your families do. Christmas for me always just meant stress and more work and never knowing what gift to get my dad that heâd actually like andââ
âBreathe, babe,â you implore.
âYeah, trying,â he nods, catching his breath. âItâs justâthis sounds so stupid, but. Itâs hard for me this time of year. I dunno.â
âRafe,â you say sadly, leaning your head on his shoulder once heâs settle down a little. âI didnât know.â
He sits there silently for a second, just letting you lean into him. âHm, figured Sarah wouldâve told you.â
You look back up at him and he eyes you warily, and you sigh in defeatâof course Sarah told him. âIâm sorry. I was just trying to figure out if it something I was doing wrong.â
âSâokay,â he shrugs, pressing a kiss to your head. âItâs not you. I love watching you have fun with all of this. I just donât⌠I donât think I can see the excitement the way everyone else can. Just brings up bad memories.â
You make a displeased noise. âBut Rafeââ
âItâs almost over, alright?â he rushes, standing up to leave the room. âAnd then Iâll be back to normal, I promise.â
You try to give Rafe space that night because you can tell heâs upset with himself and the way heâs handling things, opting to get caught up in the card games by the fire and Blytheâs special eggnog. Heâs putting on a brave face in front of all of your friends, tucking himself behind you and hiding from conversations at any opportunity, but you can see right through the cerulean stare. You feel the urgency in his needy touchâhow he just needs to be close to you but canât or wonât explain why.
The other three donât push it, but youâre grateful when they seem to all get the hint they should step away for a second, leaving the two of you alone with one last knowing stare sent from Kelce. The fire is crackling in front of the two of you where youâre curled up in his lap, soft Christmas classics playing from the TV while laughter spills in from the kitchen occupied by your friends.
âDo you wanna know one of my favorite Christmas memories?â
âHm?â he asks, looking startled by your voice. âOh, yeah. Sure.â
âMy parentsâ Christmas Eve party, when we were, godâeighteen, nineteen? It was the first one after we went away for college,â you start, waiting for him to catch up. He nods like he knows what youâre talking about.
âOh, yeah,â Rafe says, then his eyes widen. âOh, yeah. Oh my god, was that the one where we hotboxed your pool house, because we didnât know we had to start sitting at the adultsâ table that year?â
You giggle at the memory, thinking about the boys, you, Gretchen, and Margot sitting in a square at the end of the adultâs table, all trying not to give yourselves away. You sat there in silence until Margot missed her mouth and spilled practically an entire flute of champagne down the front of her dress, making Kelce laugh which caused a ripple effect until you were all teary-eyed messes.
And you wouldâve been horrified by the disappointed look on your fatherâs face at the head of the table if Rafe hadnât accidentally bumped his knee into yours from where he sat beside you, body shaking as he tried to contain his laughter. Heâd brushed a hand over your knee and leaned down to whisper a sorry into your ear, and if you couldnât use the excuse of being under an influence, you know your starry-eyed look as you told him âno problem, RCâ wouldâve been a dead giveaway of your feelings. âThatâs the one.â
âGod, I still canât believe we got away with that.â
âWe did not. My dad definitely knew,â you tell him.
Rafe groans, but heâs smiling now, even where heâs hiding his face in your shoulder. âI cannot believe he lets me date you sometimes. Seriously.â
âBut, see? Christmas can be fun sometimes, even if itâs just getting stoned at ill-advised times and causing a ruckus at the Y/l/n family Christmas Eve extravaganza.â
âMm,â Rafe hums wistfully. âMy dad and Rose went away on business on the 25th that year. I think Sarah went to John BâsâWheez and I picked up a ton of Chinese food after we burned the turkey.â
You deflate against him. âRafe.â
âNo, donât. This isnât a âfeel sorry for meâ momentâit was actually kinda nice, if I remember. We stayed in our pajamas and watched those clay people movies all day,â he says. âI dunno. Maybe Christmas isnât horrible all the time.â
It was a start.
â
Through the years your friends have all calmed down and grown up, but that doesnât stop any of you from getting a little rowdy at your parentsâ Christmas party this year. Margot comes and Gretchen finally made it home too, so you blame the repeat cocktails on the nostalgia and everyone being back together.
And things are different now because when someone brings out the mistletoe you gladly stand up on your toes and plant one on Rafe in front of all of your friends, whereas when the same scenario happened when you were seventeen youâd been a deer in headlights, squealing in surprise when Margot sprung into action, pushing Rafe out of the way so she she could kiss you insteadâa true friend, she is. Everyone laughed it off but they still tease you about it to this day.
Today, youâre still lip-locked with Rafe, ignoring the hoots and whistles from your friends, until Kelce is breaking you up and squeezing in for a cheek kiss from either of you and effectively ending the display. âAlright, mom and dad. We get it, you figured out your feelings. But itâs been a year of this shit and my eyes canât take it anymore. Separate.â
âSeriously,â Gretchen agrees. âIt was almost more fun when you didnât know.â
âNo it wasnât,â Margot and Topper chorus.
Gretchen rolls her eyes and tugs you away with a looped arm, marching you both back toward the more dignified area of the party. âCâmon, I wanna go flirt with that bartender your mom hired.â
âOoh, wait, really?!â you ask. âI love that for you.â
âAnd you need air,â she laughs, eyes scanning your flushed expression. âI swear, next time I come home youâre gonna be pregnant, Y/n/n.â
âMmm, no. We donât wanna have kids until we move back from California,â you say, immediately clapping a hand over your mouth as you realize what you just said. âOh, fuck. Gretchââ
âUntil you⌠what?â
âWe havenât told anyone, okay? So, shh,â you beg. âWe just started talking about it. My parents donât even know.â
Her eyebrows remain at their spot practically shot into her hairline. âYou know I hate to ask. But do his?â
âNo, nobody does,â you whisper. âSo tight lid, alright?â
âOh my god, wait. Thatâs so exciting,â she says, her lip pouting in adoration. âYouâll be so much closer to me. God, heâs so whippedââ
âOkay,â you interrupt, hands on her shoulders. âLetâs go find Cute Bartender and see if we can get him to shut you up, alright?â
âMaybe heâll be my Rafe.â
Cute Bartender was decidedly no Rafe, at least in your eyes, but he was falling for every one of Gretchenâs usual tricks. You sipped your champagne flute in amusement as you watched her at work from a little ways down. Sheâd just moved onto asking him how exactly a Sex on a Beach got its name when a presence sidles up next to you, a black suit jacket brushing your bare shoulder.
âYouâre way too pretty to be sitting here all by yourself.â
A comment like that would normally knock you off-kilter these days, ready to be shrugged off or politely declined depending on the situation. But coupled with your boyfriendâs very familiar voice, it has you turning to look at him in amusement.
âOh?â
âYeah, Iâm surprised your boyfriend isnât around,â Rafe says, making a show of surveying your parentsâ entire house. âI mean if I were him, I wouldnât let you out of my sight.â
âDonât have one,â you decide, stifling a giggle when something a little offended flashes in his eyes. Rafe shakes his head, sipping a little more of his drink before re-committing to the bit.
âNo? Well that works out for me then, doesnât it?â
âDepends.â
Youâre out of practice in your flirt game but you can tell it doesnât matter. Rafeâs a little tipsy and heâs absolutely hanging off of your every word. âHave we met before? I feel like I recognize you.â
âHm,â you wonder, eyes roaming over Rafe in his black tuxedo like youâre trying to place where you know him from, when youâre really just checking him out for the tenth time that night. âMaybe. I grew up around here.â
âMe too,â Rafe says. âShocked we never ran into each other.â
âA shame, really,â you say, testing the waters as you move closer to him. Rafe twitches where he leans against the bar when a festively painted fingernail traces the buttons on his crisp white shirt. âWhat should we do about that?â
âIâd like to take you home,â Rafe blurts, blinking dumbly. âAnd maybe you can just stay forever because you actually live there too because Iâve been in love with you for, like, half of my life.â
You throw your head back and laugh, slapping him on his chest. But he just grabs your hand and keeps you tucked close to him, gleeful smile matching your own. âBaby, you were doing so good for a second.â
âYou know I canât help it when Iâm this drunk, Y/n/n,â he groans, still smiling when you wrap your arms around his waist under his suit jacket. âFuck, I forgot how good of a flirt you are. You never pull the moves on me anymore.â
âMaybe youâre just immune to my charms by now.â
âNot possible,â he says. His eyes are glassy and heâs been smiling all night, and you know heâs finally starting to come around on Christmas just from the way heâs looking at you.
âRafe? And Y/n, is that you?â
Your arms unwind from Rafe and fall to your side on instinct, faced with your AP Calculus teacher for the first time in years. âMr. Torres?â
âI thought that was you two, wow,â the older man says. âHow are you both?â
You take turns catching him up on all of your life updates over the years, stumbling over your words a little from the alcohol and from the fact that your old math teacher caught you both seconds away from making out in the middle of this party. You knew better than to be getting handsy when half of Figure 8 was in attendance tonight, and you guess this was your punishment. Mr. Torres orders another round of drinks for the three of you and covers the tip for all of it, turning to say one last thing before being on his way again. âYou know, I always thought there was something there between you two.â
âIâmâIâm sorry?â Rafe says, clearing his throat.
âYes, that year I had you both in my class.â
âOh, we werenât dating then, Mr. Torres,â you clarify. âThis is uh, a little more recent.â
âNo? Couldâve fooled me back in the day,â he says, smiling at you both. âWell, happy holidays.â
Mr. Torres walks off and you both stand there in a stunned silence until you groan, making Rafe laugh against you. âThat was humiliating.â
âGod. Who knew our math teacher was such a romantic?â
â
John B drops the two of you at home on his way back to The Cut that night, volunteered as a designated driver for the night by his girlfriend. Rafe lets you take the front seat but that doesnât stop him from tipsily complaining about the lack of safety features in the back of the beat-up van.
âIs this thing even street legal?â
âI try not to think about that,â John B admits, pulling up to your street. âMonsieur and madame, your destination.â
âThanks, kid,â Rafe says, helping you out of the front seat. âMerry Christmas. See you tomorrow.â
The two of you still-slightly-drunkenly shuffle around the house in a practiced routine for coming home after nights out, but youâre having a harder time with your heels this particular night. By the time you finally get them off and leave them by the front door, you expect Rafe to be in the bathroom getting ready for bed. Instead you find him with his bow tie undone around his neck, scarf and jacket still on, standing in front of the tree holding a small, neatly-wrapped box in his hands. âHey, câmere for a sec?â
âWhatâs this?â
âWell⌠Christmas is all about traditions with the people you love, right? And I thought itâd be cool if we started one,â he says shyly. âI mean, I plan to spend at least a few more with you, if thatâs alright.â
âI was thinking quite a few,â you correct, feeling yourself smile as you slowly walk into the living room.
âQuite a few,â he agrees. âAnd one I always wanted to do when we were kids was open the first present on Christmas Eve, so I was thinkingâI have one for you, sweetheart.â
âYou do?â you say, pushing past him to kneel on the floor, digging around for a perfect present for him to open tonight. You hadnât really planned for this but Rafe was trying, and he looked so sweet standing by your tree holding that box in his hands. âI can find one for you, too.â
âNo, no, itâs okay. Itâs kinda for both of us, anywayâ he says softly, leading the two of you to sit on the couch together.
He places it in your lap and you slip a finger under the paper immediately, admiring his adequate wrapping job as you tear it open to reveal a white box. âAnd itâs definitely not, like, a huge deal, or anythingââ
But you canât hear him anymore as you find the wooden ornament inside the box, slowly pulling it out. Itâs a picture frame, with a photo of you sitting in Rafeâs lap in Massachusetts from just a few weeks ago. At the bottom of the frame is an inscription that says ârafe & y/n. first christmas.â
âAnd listen,â he rushes to continue. âI know it isnât technically our first, âcause weâve been dating for over a year. But I dunno, itâs our first tree together in our first home and everything, and I just thought, you put all of those ornaments up on the tree this year, and this is the first time Iâve enjoyed Christmas in a really, really long time, andââ
âYou know,â you squeak out, feeling those annoying tears start to brim your eyes. âFor someone who doesnât like Christmas very much, you give really great gifts.â
âYou like it?â he asks in earnest, his hand falling to your knee. You look up, feeling the first tears overflow.

THROUGH A RAPISTâS EYESâ (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from Neena Susan Thomas
âThrough a rapistâs eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewâŚed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whoâs clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they donât have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isnât worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys youâre not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: canât believe it is so cold out here, weâre in for a bad winter. Now that youâve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said theyâd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you canât beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh â HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guyâs parts it is extremely painful. You might think that youâll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and heâs out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, donât dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but youâd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL âŚ.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from youâŚ. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver wonât see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DONâT DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driverâs side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked âfor helpâ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and itâs better safe than sorry.
