Pilates @ Xtend Barre
Class: Pilates
Location: West Hollywood
Work-out: Mat Pilates
Difficulty: Level 3.5
Next day soreness: 3
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦Moderately Sweaty
Parking: Street Parking, or you can pay $5 to valet with Crossroads and that money can be credited towards your next class or Xtend merchandise
Amenities: Merchandise for purchase
Requirements for class: socks and water
This class pleasantly surprised me after an initially stressful parking situation. The class is right on Melrose, so street parking was difficult but I ended up finding free parking on a side street perpendicular to Melrose (La Jolla, I believe). Amber, the instructor, was very sweet and what I especially liked about this class that differentiates it from other pilates/barre classes was that stretching was incorporated throughout the entire class, and not just at the end. Having been a dancer for 15 years, this really appealed to me.
The workout was also different from a lot of other studios, and the use of a resistance band and a heavy rubber ball was incorporated. I left with my booty on fire, and appreciated Amber taking the time to check in with me, since it was my first class.
Fit and Flow @ Pink Iron
Class: Fit and Flow
Location: West Hollywood
Work-out: Weight training, cross fit, circuit training
Difficulty: Level 3.5
Next day soreness: 3.5
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦Moderately Sweaty
Parking: Underground lot
Amenities: Free showers and lockers; water and swag for purchase
Requirements for class: Sneakers and water
Don’t let the pink fool you cause this gym is no joke!
This was my first weight training class, and this is one of Pink Iron’s more “chill” classes. We started out with some foam rolling, which was nice but also painful (if you’ve ever tried foam rolling, you know what I’m talking about!). Then we did one-handed kettle ball lifts and lunges. There were 3 different circuits total. The second circuit involved doing hollow holds (for abs) and handstand holds - which are exactly what they sound like. The last circuit involved doing pull-up holds or ring holds. Finally, we stretched it out. It was a small class and there was some partner work involved, and the instructor, Rose, was really good about giving individual attention. I went with a friend luckily so it was pretty fun for us, but it was definitely harder than we expected!
Adult Surf Lesson @ Campsurf
Class: Adult Surf Lesson
Location: El Porto Beach (in Manhattan Beach)
Work-out: Surfing
Difficulty: Level 5
Next day soreness: 5
Duration: 90 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦💦 Drenched because you are in the water
Parking: Metered lot
Amenities: Surfboard and wetsuit provided
Requirements for class: Bathing suit, sunscreen and a can-do attitude.
This was the first time I had ever tried surfing (in the water and not on a Surfset system) and it was every bit as hard as I had expected. The instructors do a good job of going around and pushing each individual out over the waves, turning them around, and then giving a push back to the shore so the rider gets a chance to stand up and surf back to land. However, this is not for the faint of heart. I was thrown around by the waves and occasionally, even when I was with the instructor, he still couldn’t prevent me from being knocked off the board by a wave.
You kind of have to be fearless with this class so if you’re not dedicated to learning the sport, or at least there with a friend, it might seem like a long lesson. The class size is small (mine was 7) with 2 instructors. I kind of just floated around while the instructors were with others because I hadn’t gotten good enough to swimming out to catch my own wave. I was incredibly sore that afternoon and even more sore for the next couple of days, though, I am so glad I got to experience it. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you have additional questions about this lesson!
Pilates Booty & Abs @ Eden Sassoon Pilates
Class: Pilates Booty and Abs
Location: Beverly Hills
Work-out: Reformer Pilates
Difficulty: Level 3.5
Next day soreness: 3.5
Duration: 50 min
Sweat Level: 💦 Moderately Sweaty
Parking: Metered street
Amenities: Socks, swag and water for purchase. Kitchen/sink to fill up your bottle
Requirements for class: Bring water and socks!
This was a nice little change from my normal megaformer Pilates classes. Alexi was a wonderful teacher who was attentive and knowledgable about appropriate form. The class was tough but not unbearably challenging like some of the other Pilates classes I’ve reviewed. It would push you just until you felt like quitting and then the exercise would switch so you really could stick it out through everything. The Pilates Booty and Abs class worked exactly those two areas, which was perfect for me since I feel like I’ve gotten bulkier in some places I don’t want to be bulky from taking other full body Pilates classes.
The studio (owned by famous salon guru Vidal’s daughter Eden) is very well-maintained, beautiful and clean. It is located right above Scratch Bar on La Cienega’s restaurant row, so parking may be a bit tough during dinner hours. However, for people who enjoy Pilates, it’s definitely worth checking out!

Surfset @ Sandbox Fitness
Class: Surfset 101
Location: Sherman Oaks
Work-out: Surfboard circuit training
Difficulty: Level 3.5
Next day soreness: 2
Duration: 45 min
Sweat Level: 💦 Moderately Sweaty
Parking: 6 tandem parking in the back/Metered street
Amenities: Water for purchase
Requirements for class: Bring water, and a towel for TRX classes
This workout was unlike anything I’ve ever done. I took the intro Surfset class and it was a great to get accustomed to using the surfboard while still providing a good workout. The class was a series of different circuit training moves on the board, which incorporated a lot of balance. We did push-ups, planks, squats and burpees all on the board. In addition, the instructor also added some surf moves such as “swimming” and popping up onto your board. I feel like whenever I go to try surfing for real, this would be a good intro for the feel of being on the board. The class only has room for about 8, and the instructor, Jenna was very attentive.
At first it seemed a little daunting, but once you get the hang of the board and can balance a little better, it wasn’t too hard and I had a ton of fun. Sherman Oaks is a little out of the way for some, but I highly recommend everyone try this!
CP Yoga Sculpt @ Corepower Yoga
Class: Corepower Yoga Sculpt w/ Sarah West
Location: Wilshire in Brentwood: UPDATE - as of 7/1/15, Corepower Wilshire is no longer on ClassPass. This has been confirmed by the ClassPass team.
Work-out: Yoga
Difficulty: Level 4.5
Next day soreness: 4
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦💦Drenched
Parking: Free underground lot with CP validation
Amenities: Showers, Lockers, towels and mats for rent. Free water fountain, bottled water and large selection of merchandise for purchase.
Requirements for class: Bring water, mat, towel and dress for 100 degree class.
Whoever thinks yoga isn’t a hard workout should take this class and have his/her mind blown. This is probably the most challenging workout class I’ve ever taken in MY LIFE. The poses themselves are intermediate (CP2 Level) but with the added weights, the class is killer! There is a 3 min. cardio section as well where everyone jumps and runs in place nonstop for 3 min - in an 100+ degree room. There are also many upper and lower body toning reps done with the weights (each person has a set of 3lbs and 5lbs, which the studio provides), and an intense core/ab session. This class is definitely a full body workout and not for the faint of heart.
Rise Nation
Class: Level A1
Location: West Hollywood
Work-out: Versa Climber
Difficulty: Level 4
Next day soreness: 3
Duration: 30 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦 Sweaty
Parking: Lot next to studio (when I went I was not charged to park, but from reading others’ experiences, it seems like the lot generally charges).
Amenities: Towels, Alkaline Water Fountain and Juice Bar/Cafe on deck outside the studio
Requirements for class: Bring water bottle and sneakers are preferable (though if you forget and only have socks, that’s not a deal breaker)
This was my first time ever using a versa climber (thanks to Marino Wellness for introducing me to the experience), and the first 15 minutes are KILLER. This workout supposedly burns about twice as many calories per min as a spin class (hence, why it’s only 30 minutes, which is way more than enough). The class is mostly cardio-based, and you are on this machine moving both arms and legs to “climb” for the entire time. General consensus from my class was that everyone thought they were going to pass out for the first 15 minutes, and then your body adjusts to it and the second half is not as bad.
The energy of the instructor I had, Adam, was great. He definitely kept everyone motivated. The ceiling of the studio is also incredibly cool (as pictured above), and the best part is that the studio opens up to a rooftop deck which houses a juice bar and cafe so you can go reenergize afterwards. It was a unique and challenging experience, and I will definitely be back!
FusionFest @ Exhale
Class: Core Fusion Barre
Location: Venice
Work-out: Barre
Difficulty: Level 2.5
Next day soreness: 1.5
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💧💧A little dewy
Parking: Metered and Free Street Parking, validated Garage for $1.50 cash up to 90 min.
Amenities: Towels, water, yoga apparel and accessories for purchase. Mats provided.
Requirements for class: Socks required.
I came here for FusionFest and took a class with Briana, and I must say, I liked the whole experience and class here much better than the Santa Monica location. Briana was very energetic and her class was unique and fun. It was not the exact same as other barre workouts, which I appreciated.
The studio itself had a fun vibe with plenty of great workout gear for purchase, and also had fun knickknacks like candles and scented oils. FusionFest kicked it up a notch with free snacks and drinks and a nice little swag bag. Although FusionFest (a free event) was not booked through ClassPass, exhale is offered via ClassPass regularly.
The Studio MDR (East)
Class: (MDR) All Levels 2.0
Location: Culver City
Work-out: Megaformer Pilates
Difficulty: Level 5
Next day soreness: 5
Duration: 50 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦💦 Drenched
Parking: Metered and Freet Street Parking
Amenities: Towels, power bars, water and apparel for purchase.
Requirements for class: Grippy socks required.
Studio MDR is one of my favorite workouts on ClassPass. The workout is incredibly challenging, but you always leave feeling better for it and wanting to come back. The studio and machines are all clean and relatively new and the space is very inviting. Most classes work your entire body, from core and upper body to legs and booty. My favorite instructors are Natalya and Leianna, though supposedly Ky is amazing. (Unfortunately, his classes are usually not available on ClassPass).
This definitely isn’t your entry-level pilates class, though they now have a basics class for beginners. The range of class times is great as well, starting as early as 5AM until 9:20PM. The instructors are all inviting and encouraging, and definitely not snooty like some instructors at other reformer pilates classes. I highly, highly recommend this studio (with locations in Marina del Rey and Culver).

Sweat-Flow @ Sweat Yoga
Class: Sweat-Flow
Location: Santa Monica
Work-out: Hot Yoga
Difficulty: Level 2
Next day soreness: 1
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦 Sweaty
Parking: Metered Street Parking
Amenities: Showers, Lockers, Mats for Rent, Towels, Clover Juice and water for purchase, in-store yoga merchandise.
Requirements for class: Bring water and dress for heat.
This was a great class to take after a stressful day. The workout was not too challenging, but was really helped relieve stress with many holding poses, flow, and twists. There was a lot of freedom to flow at your own pace, which has its ups and downs. For more beginning level yogis, this may be challenging to remember the names of some of the moves and the sequences. My instructor was Layna Dakin and she was pleasant.
The studio itself, being new, was very nice and clean. The room was spacious and had a relaxing vibe, and there are no crazy rules about not being allowed to enter the studio if you’re running a few minutes late. Class also ends with cool wet towels for everyone.
Pilates Sculpt @ Hot Pilates
Class: Pilates Sculpt w/ Greg Louis
Location: West Hollywood, Sunset Plaza
Work-out: Pilates
Difficulty: Level 3
Next day soreness: 2.5
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦💦Drenched
Parking: Free lot at Sunset Plaza
Amenities: Showers, Lockers, free towels and mats provided. Juice Served Here and water for purchase.
Requirements for class: Bring water and dress for 100 degree class
I took this class once when Shannon (the owner) subbed and found that Greg’s class wasn’t as challenging, but still a good workout. It’s great for beginners and more intermediate levels alike. It was a full body workout but not too hard that it was unbearable, especially in the heat.
Core Barre Fusion @ Exhale Santa Monica
Class: Core Fusion Barre
Location: Santa Monica
Workout Type: Barre
Difficulty: Level 2.5
Next day soreness: 2
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦Moderately Sweaty
Parking: Fairmont Hotel valet (free for 2 hours with validation) or metered street parking on 2nd right outside studio or Santa Monica lot free for 90 minutes.
Amenities: Free mat rental, towels and water
Requirements for class: Wear socks, grippy socks preferred.
First of all, the front desk staff was very careless. When I first arrived and told them it was my first time at the studio, they made no effort to show me the ropes and just told me to wait in the studio and someone will tell me what to do. When there was no instructor in the room, I came back out to ask and again the front desk said when the instructor arrived he’ll ask if someone is new. The instructor was very nice, but when he instructor arrived, I had to go up to him to tell him it was my first time, and ask him about what things I needed, towels, etc. He actually said that usually the front desk tells me about those things. When I mentioned what they said, he laughed and said how everyone was trying to place responsibility on each other.
That aside, the class itself was very similar to other barre classes like Pop Physique, Pure Barre and the Bar Method. It wasn’t quite as challenging, but it was still a decent workout. The studio, however, seemed a little dated and didn’t have the same energy level as a Pop Physique or even Pure Barre. The upside is that the location is very nice, right in the Fairmont and next to the ocean so you can easily fit in a workout before or after hanging out in Santa Monica.
Tip: To get in and out easily, there is a side entrance on 2nd street north of Wilshire that opens right into Exhale so you don’t have to walk through the driveway and hotel to get to the studio.
I won’t write this place off just yet. I’ll try a different class (they have yoga as well) at the Venice location to see if it’s any better.
CPP Workout @ Carrie’s Pilates Plus
Class: CPP Workout
Location: West Hollywood, Melrose & La Cienega
Workout Type: Pilates
Difficulty: Level 4
Next day soreness: 4
Duration: 45 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦Sweaty
Parking: Parking available in the building and street parking
Amenities: Juice Served Here and water for purchase.
Requirements for class: Toe Sox, water, and a towel are recommended.
This is a high-intensity full body workout that fatigues each muscle group to exercise the fast twitch muscles, which so important to burning fat. Be prepared to be sore! Michelle M, Jenny Brain, and Juliet Chung are incredible instructors who will push you to the limit. Seriously, you’ll want to drop the plank, but they’ll make sure to keep you in it!
Fly 45 @ FlyWheel
Class: Fly 45
Location: West Hollywood
Workout Type: Spin
Difficulty: Level 3
Next day soreness: 3
Duration: 45 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦💦Drenched
Parking: Validated parking available in the building
Amenities: Lockers, showers, spin shoes and towels are complimentary.
Requirements for class: Bring water
Unlike most spin studios, Flywheel has a monitor on your bike that keeps track of your RPMs, resistance (referred to as torque in class) and Power output (the cumulative level of your workout). You’ll see how hard your worked and how you ranked compared to the riders next to you. There are positives and negatives to the monitor — I find myself very focused on making sure I’m on the right torque but at the same time I want to know how far I’ve gone and how many calories I’ve burned. The great music and instructors will keep your focus on the ride like Karen Maxwell. Get ready, no cruising allowed!

GROOV3
Class: GROOV3
Location: Various, permanent studio opening in Culver City June 6th, 2015
Workout Type: Dance
Difficulty: Level 2
Next day soreness: 1
Duration: 60 min
Sweat Level: 💦💦Sweaty
Parking: Depends on location, though the new permanent studio may have a lot.
Amenities: None/Depending on location
Requirements for class: Bring water and wear sneakers
This is a feel-good class that will have you leaving in a good mood. The class is very high energy and both times I’ve taken it, the instructors have been amazing. It’s fun, it’s not intimidating like a lot of dance classes can be and it is a great cardio workout. I love GROOV3 because it is for dancers of all levels, but you still can learn and perform a legitimate routine and do a cardio workout without it being high impact. This is great for people who love to dance and who hate traditional cardio workouts. This has to be a the most fun class I’ve taken on ClassPass and it’s great to go with a group.
Pilates Booty @ Hot Pilates

A great class and good lower body workout that will leave you sore the next day! Shannon and Cindy are both great instructors and you will definitely work muscles that never see the sun. Challenging but not unbearable.
