The Game: Recommend 5 of your own works and then tag others to do the same.
(Tagging @bloomsberries @skatehepburn @katiedingo @mlleclaudine and anyone else who wants to do it, and if you don't want to do it, no worries. )
I'm really not good at self-promotion or picking favorites or recommending things because I'm a Libra with self-esteem issues so why tf should you trust me but here we go.
lamplighter, f/f, Harper Lee/original character. I like the writing in this one and shame I didn't pursue it further but seriously who wants to get sued by the estate of a cranky old (now dead) Southern recluse?
coup de grace, f/f, Janice Covington/Melinda Pappas (XWP). This is part of a series, a very long-ass one. But there was some kind of spark of inspiration or divine hand at work or maybe I just held my liquor better back then, but I think this is close to the best thing I've written. At the same time I get sad thinking that because I may never hit that high note again, but you know what, bitches, I need a hobby and at least this is not a messy one except in my brain, so you're stuck with me.
the tristan chord, f/f, Caroline/Gillian, Last Tango in Halifax. Similar to the previous, another big-ass part of a big-ass series. I think it's up there too. Who knows, maybe it's even better (I think? see I told you I was rubbish at this) than the previous story because it's a bit more constrained/tighter and lacking crazy time jumps.
a good fixed star, f/f, Caroline/Gillian, LTiH. In contrast to the previous two stories, this is short and sweet standalone piece. For some reason the writing came easily and I was very happy with the result.
the marriage plot, f/f, Caroline/Gillian, LTiH. Another standalone story for Cazillian. (Shoutout to the AO3 reader who came up with the perfect portmanteau for our gals!) I started it shortly before COVID lockdown, intending it to be kind of shortish and fun, but as my anxiety and dread increased during that period, so did the need to keep writing this. So it kind of got away from me but morphed into something I was satisfied with in the end.
A View of Delft
In that town, across the water where all has been seen and the bricks are cherished like sparrows, in that town like a letter from home read again and again in a port, in that town with its library of tiles and its addresses recalled by Johannes Vermeer who died in debt in that town across the water where the dead take the census and there are no vacant rooms for his gaze occupies them all, where the sky is waiting to have news of a birth, in that town which pours from the eyes of those who left it, there between two chimes of the morning, when fish are sold in the square and the maps on the walls show the depth of the sea, in that town I am preparing for your arrival. —John Berger
ai could simply never create a body of fanfictional work that is so revealing about the author that it borders on humiliating.
never lose hope. somewhere, a middle-aged, gender ambiguous person with an advanced degree in an esoteric field and a fiber arts hobby could be crashing out and pinning all their remaining mental health on getting obsessed with your otp. any day now, the most elegantly written 100k fanfic you have ever read is going to hit ao3. it could happen. it has happened.

At that moment I saw you at the end of the platform. You were wearing trousers. On the long platform beside the stranded trains, in the vast white diffused late-afternoon light of the rift valley, you looked very small. With your appearance everything changed. Everything from the passage under the railway tracks to the sun setting, from the Arabic numerals on the board which announced the times of the trains, to the gulls perched on a roof, from the invisible stars to the taste of coffee on my palate. The world of circumstance and contingency, into which, long before, I had been born, became like a room. I was home. —John Berger, from And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos

“The truth lies not in any claim to reality, but in the place where what is real moves beyond our interpretation of it. True art means seeking to capture the unreal.”

Suddenly feeling terrible that I’ve never given my cats a tiny typewriter. Photo from my collection, 1966.
you know that thing where you have too many things you want to be writing so you just sort of cycle through them all and don't actually make real progress on any one thing and you know you should just power through one of them (especially the one that is in the fixing/reworking stage, which is normally where i love to play), only then you get an idea for another thing that you need to get down, and then oh that's an idea, and let me just rewrite this sentence and then that one, and on and on and on?
yeah.
(not to mention that multi-shipper thing where you have an idea for a character, but there are more than one version of that idea in your head for multiple ships you have for said character. yup!)
Dude it is SO FUN and EXCITING to see a reoccurring reader. If you've commented a handful of times on an author's work, I guarantee that they recognize you. You can't imagine how many times I've excitedly informed my friends "the person with the funny cat image commented!" "- anon is back!!!!" and the friends've recognized who I was talking about because I talk about my commenters so often LOL. We love you all!!!

“First, the act of writing is a pure tempting of fate; second, what writing captures doesn’t pass through the sieve of a singular I, solidly planted in everyday life, but is twenty people, that is, a number thrown out there to say: when I write, not even I know who I am.”
— Elena Ferrante, In the Margins
