When Regulus arrives at James Potter’s flat and sees the state the kitchen is in, he considers turning around and never coming back.
“What the hell happened?”
He sets down the groceries he’d brought, looking around incredulously. James jumps up from behind the counter, where he’d been setting the oven to the correct temperature.
“Oh, you’re here! Perfect.”
Everywhere the apron doesn’t cover his deep red jumper, James is dusted in flour. Even his glasses are smeared with… something. Regulus doesn’t understand how he manages it.
He’d already had his doubts when James suggested making Sirius’s birthday cake himself this year. This only confirms he was right to be sceptical.
“Did you bring the butter? I need it for the crème au beurre…”
James crosses the kitchen and starts rummaging through the bags Regulus has set on the table. Once he’s close enough, Regulus plucks the glasses off his nose.
“These are filthy,” he sighs, making his way over to the sink to wash them. It’s crammed with dirty dishes and baking utensils.
James has no choice but to pause until his glasses are clean and dry—his eyesight really is that poor. When Regulus hands them back, James looks vaguely surprised as he slips them on.
“That’s better, actually,” he says with a genuine smile. “Thanks.”
Before Regulus can say anything, James steps forward, cups his chin with a sticky hand, and presses a kiss to his lips. Once it starts, Regulus doesn’t feel much like arguing anymore.
The kiss lingers, and they stand there longer than they should, considering the guests are due to arrive in two hours.
“Mm… later,” Regulus murmurs between kisses, though it takes considerable self-restraint. James lets out a disgruntled noise.
“Later, Potter. Let’s finish this first.”
James accepts defeat, though not before squeezing Regulus’s arse and leaving a floury handprint on his black jeans. Regulus swats him lightly.
