My Business Tips For Freelance
Recently I have been attending a business course which is through my business advisor. I have more sessions to go but up to now I have learnt so much and thought I would do a couple of blogs on this subject so I can share some information with you all.
After my blogs I will be putting the rest of my content into an ebook, which I am hoping to release this year. I will have a range of topics in my e book from business tips to tips on the make up industry in general, plus lots more.
It is hard starting out as freelance, as you have lots of questions going round your head on how to do certain things. A lot of the questions I had have thankfully been answered in the course. I still have my own opinions on a few things and stick by them but generally it was nice to get things answered. So I hope I can get these passed on to you.
I thought I would start with a few tips from my last session, which was Sales Essentials for Women Entrepreneurs. Some of these tips/points you may already know but for those that do not I hope it helps.
What you want to be aiming towards is the GTE – Go to expert in what you do.
Below are a few tips on how to become a GTE
Be Prolific – you need to do lots of whatever it is that you do in your job – be out there as much as you possibly can
Niche – Make one part of what you do specific and specialised. The more niche you have the less competition you have. STAND OUT
Network – network in your local region as well as surrounding areas
Showing Clients your worth (this is very important), below is what clients want to see from you:
They need to feel like a priority
You make sure any deadlines are met
From demonstrating these values the client will in return trust your expertise and honesty.
We all work freelance as we have chosen a career we love and want to make money from this. It is a great feeling knowing you wake up everyday doing a job you love but that love needs to bring is some money. So below are a few tips on how to maximise your profits:
Ensure your clients are fully aware of ALL your services
Psychologically charging higher fees create higher value in the clients minds
Being in the higher price margin is good as this will weed out the bargain hunters who will drive you crazy on price and not the value of the job
If you get a client who says the price is to much – be confident and say “I know”
It is hard starting out, as you want to take as many jobs as you can but do not just accept any client. You want to take on GOOD clients that will be productive for you and your business.
Do not use time as a basis for your fees, base your fees on the value of the job you are doing i.e. your skills and expertise.
In the image attached I have added a 12-week action plan I did on my course. This will be really handy for anyone in business to do. I have listed all the areas I work in down the side, and across the top I have listed all the actions I will take for each topic. This maybe a blog, handing out cards, advertising and so on. You can tailor this to meet your needs. By making this action plan you can tick what actions you will take for each subject you work in. I have this on the wall in my study so I see this everyday. It is really motivating to see and really keeps what you need to do fresh in your mind. If anything on your action plan is not working you will clearly see this as you work through things and at the 12-week point you can change certain areas.
Lastly, remember to say to yourself each day “What are the three things I will do today to achieve my goals” (I also have this written on my action plan)
