As we all know by now Pokémon just announced some pretty exciting stuff for the series that includes a Gen 4 remake and an open world RPG. Let's talk about it.
First we have the Diamond and Pearl remakes, set to be released in late 2021 (most likely November). People have a lot of conflicting thoughts on this one. In the remake it pays homage to the original sprite models by having our in world character be a small, chibi rendition of the full character model that we see in battle mode. The Gen 4 remake is repeatedly being called a "faithful remake" meaning it won't go away from the original plot and mechanics of the original game. Personally, I would've liked to see the in game character and world design reflect the greatness of the Sinnoh region. Considering Nintendo is a billion dollar company, I think they can afford to put more time into how they make their Pokémon games look. However, I don't absolutely hate the art style used. I think it was big mistake not giving GameFreak the license to this game, but hopefully the criticism is listened to and they take the art in the direction they took the new PokémonSnap and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This would push back the release date of the game, but I would rather have a nostalgic game with a modern twist.
Speaking of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it looks fantastic. People are rightfully calling it a Pokémon version of Breath of the Wild because of the pretty open world that can be explored. This is also set in the Sinnoh region, and is actually a prequel to the original Sinnoh plot. In the trailer we see 3 books, two under the Sinnoh book meaning there will probably be a Pokémon Legends series that focuses on other early regions. The world and character design looks absolutely amazing, and you can choose to catch pokémon a pacifist way (throwing a pokéball without engaging in battle) or the classic way by running into encounters. Pokémon battles will follow the style of how the battles look in the anime, which is exciting but a big feat. The trailer showed little gameplay, and the frame rate doesn't look great right now. The game is set to be released in 2022 and I have high hopes for it.
Overall, today was a big day for news in Pokémon and everything being released looks exciting. I will be getting both of these games as I'm equally eager for both. They each have their own properties that give them a ton of potential. Although, when it comes to Pokémon Nintendo seems to rush out trailers as soon as they can. Considering this year is the 25th anniversary for Pokémon, it's no surprise they wanted to take on big projects. I do hope they fix the initial issues seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus and take fan critique into consideration for the Gen 4 remakes, but all in all everything seems like a lot to look forward to. :)
