it was like you were trying to give jay a heart attack. you watched as he painfully tried to swallow his drink, as if something so simple had suddenly become impossibly difficult.
"you what? why?"

you chuckled at the sheepish look painting his face.

"got the goods, hubby?" you chimed, strolling over to him.
he looked so handsome in that moment: hair slightly tousled from the autumn wind, cheeks tinged pink—though you weren't quite sure whether it was from the cold or you—and the rustling of brown paper bags that somehow added to his already boyish charm.
jay had always been handsome to you.
but right now, domestic never looked so good. and you knew—as much as you teased him—he'd still be your dorky boyfriend from high school, the one who got way too into the 'gilmore girls' trilogy and did victory dances over completing the simplest things.

jay had stepped out for ten minutes.
he’d run to the store to pick up your favorite ice cream, as a treat for you getting through a rather painful appointment this morning. he’d sat with you through it, held your hand while you were poked at with needles and let you squeeze him back through the pain. it hurt to see the tears well up in your eyes, but you had powered through the pain and jay was so proud and endeared by your bravery.
the ten minutes it took him to go fetch the ice cream and come back was all it took for you to decide that you had full bodily independence, despite this morning’s painful procedure, and walk around on your injured foot.
jay was barely one foot in the door when he heard you suck in a pained breath as you sink into your desk chair, wincing at the ache in your foot.
“what are you doing?” he demands, all but dropping the paper grocery bags onto the counter and rushing to your side. “the doctor said you aren’t supposed to walk for three days!”
you frown at your reflection when you open your computer. “i have work to do.”
jay heaves out a sigh, slowly closing the laptop despite your various protests. “work can wait, baby. your supervisors will understand, just send them your doctor’s note. rest today, at the very least.”
“i’m perfectly capable of handling myself,” you argue stubbornly, even as jay is gently hauling you up from your wheelie chair to walk you back into the living room.
“i know that,” jay replies patiently. “i just think you shouldn’t have to do it alone.”
he’d made the mistake of trying to carry you earlier, which had nearly earned him a smack upside the head, so instead he puts his arm around you and lets you lean on him as you hop one-legged back towards the couch.
as stubborn as you are, jay admires you independence. he sometimes struggles to accommodate it, as his nature is always to fix and protect more than to support from afar, but ultimately he always tries his hardest to stay by your side and help when you find it in you to ask.
you’re still giving him an earful about your work, how you’ve got deadlines to meet and teams counting on you.
“i can’t let one little toe injury keep me from fulfilling my obligations, jay.” never mind the fact that you were practically crying in the office today and popping painkillers like candy. according to you, the world will fall apart if you don’t get this proposal in today.
jay sits you down on the couch, hands firm on your shoulders. “then i will take care of it, and you will sit down and watch tv. prop your leg up, it’ll help with the swelling.”
to hell with laid back support. jay is a man of action, and if you need this report done, then it’ll be done. but you also need to rest, so he sits down at the table behind your spot at the couch (so he can keep an eye on you) and gets to work.
you grumble a string of protests, but they quiet swiftly once you’ve got a bowl of ice cream in your hands, your foot up on a pillow, and the cheery intro music of some cheesy k-drama playing on the tv.
jay smiles down at the computer, glasses low on his nose as he studies your handwriting intently. by now, he’s been with you long enough to decipher all your notes and work. he’s confident he’ll be able to turn in your proposal well, though he’s less sure he’ll be able to keep your restless self still enough to heal all day.
no matter, he thinks. as much as you’d argue it, you deserve to be taken care of and looked after — toe injury and otherwise. and damn it, once jay park has set his mind to something, he will succeed no matter what.
based on a true story! (me, having a minor but rather painful operation on my toe this week. not fun, but did spark a fic idea so i guess it cancels out)
