What always sticks out to me is that Elon Musk has never used his wealth to found, bankroll, or buy up a video game studio. This man makes loving video games core to his identity. Before he was a dot-com boom millionaire, he was a small-time video game programmer and co-founded(?) a games company in the mid-90s FMV boom. You would imagine that such a man, given unfathomable wealth, would have set it towards the goal of getting other people to make whatever half-conceived dream games he's got in the corners of his mind a reality at some point or another in the last two decades. But no! The only time he's ever even floated the idea of a video game studio in the past quarter-century that he's been fantastically wealthy... has been when he said some never-gonna-happen bullshit last year about how he was going to start an AI video game company to churn out rudderless slop. No taste, no imagination, no culture, just trying to circumvent human labor out of a contemptuous disinterest in artcraft.
Like, the closest we get is how Jeff Bezos' Amazon Studios keeps running even at a loss just because he wants to play the bigshot movie exec and schmooze with the Hollywood elite. But then, he's old-school like that. In that his wealth actually was founded on selling tangible goods at a profit, and also in that he's always looked old.
Rest in peace Ted Turner, seemingly the only super-rich guy to come up in the last like 50 years who really gave a shit about funding good art.
