tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"

you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.

#gortash unfortunately learned very young that the only way to protect himself from ever being a powerless victim ever again #was to consolidate so much power under his exclusive control that he would become untouchable #and there was no cost too great or too precious to pay in achieving that ambition #i think that is still his driving motivation even when we meet him at the start of act 3 #yes he is also a servant to bane the god of tyranny and yes he is obliged to conquer the world for his chosen god #but i think if his ambitions didn’t tie directly into his trauma #he would have had no reason to revisit his parents and force tadpoles into their eyes #he didn’t need to do that to achieve his goals. even if they’d tried to speak out about him #who would have listened to a couple of lower city cobblers?#he did it to revenge himself. because he is still angry and he is still wounded no matter how much he would deny it if you confronted him #about it #and i do think he would deny it! i think he sincerely believes that all of his suffering was Worth It because of the strength he now has #but i think he feels that way because he *cannot* look directly at his own trauma or what it has actually cost him #(or maybe—even worse—he wouldn’t even know what he was looking at. i think he has completely smothered the parts of himself #that would have a rational and human reaction to trying to process his own suffering)#(because to process it he would have to become vulnerable. and to become vulnerable is to be weak.)#(and there’s nothing that gortash holds in more contempt than weakness)#< prev #you put it into words!#bg3 #enver gortash
