Janelle Monae - Q.U.E.E.N.
every day i'm forced to read dogshit takes on othello on tumblr.com.
tumblr really is the piss poor reading comprehension white people website because HOW do you read a play about an african man in 16th century europe grappling with extreme insecurity and paranoia to the point of being driven to murder his wife AND THINK IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS RACE.... LIKE HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE THE RACE OUT OF OTHELLO. "othello was so insecure :/" because he was still marginalized and reduced to his skin colour even after rising to the top. "othello was too jealous :/" because he was made constantly aware of his fragile position and was terrified of the slightest threat to it. "othello could've done anything besides kill desdemona" HE WAS DRIVEN BY HIS FEAR OF BEING AN OUTSIDER IN A WHITE SOCIETY!!!
you could argue that he isn't even particularly misogynistic... he clearly very much loves & respects desdemona, far better than most other shakespearean tragic protagonists treat women, and his immediate condemnation of her seems to be more about fear of his own status being threatened and not fear of female sexuality. and of course the text itself has some racist undertones because shakespeare was writing in the 1600s, no matter how progressive he might have been, which should still be considered in his depiction of race. this play is literally about the paranoia and constant insecurity that comes with being an outsider in an all-white society that drives you to commit the unspeakable and people have the nerve to say othello was gullible or impulsive or stupid. mr othello get the FUCK behind me i will literally defend you with my dying breath.
Can we just start stabbing Julius Caesar now it's been a hard week.
The rare and dangerous Four Loaves technique...
Is this loss?
something about the way shakespeare's plays are positioned to just barely cover the untold tragedies lurking underneath. lady macbeth knows how tender the babe is that milks her yet the macbeths have no child to pass the crown to. iago mentions that othello saw his own brother shot to pieces by cannons. olivia was planning to grieve her brother for 7 years until she met viola. beatrice knew benedick of old. lady capulet was only fourteen when she gave birth to juliet. it drives me crazy to see all the untold stories peeking out between the lines of the main plot.

Words from Antigonick (Sophokles) translated by Anne Carson
GUYS GUYS LISTEN. tomorrow is the ides of march. someone has the chance to do the funniest thing ever. just saying.
on a completely unrelated note, did you guys know that julius caesar assumed dictatorship for life about a month before the ides of march? fun fact about the roman republic government system, ‘dictator’ was a temporary position. and the dictator was nominated by a consul (often at the request of the senate), then confirmed by a vote of the comitia curiata. most dictators were appointed for 6mo-1 year, bc they were often appointed to resolve a specific situation. enough out of me, the point is that it was a temporary and elected position. and when someone tried to have that position be for life, well, sic semper tyrannis
Saw this license plate today and I'm still ugly laughing about it
Haha after the first two images I literally went looking through the notes to see if someone had the same idea as me... And YAY! Portal references! SPAAACE...
spotted in virginia right outside of dc—happy ides of march, y'all!
