i’m fascinated by the impact of traditional masculinity on gay male sexuality in the early days of queer lib in america particularly as a parallel to the ways in which their lesbian counterparts were similarly ruled by struggles with gender roles, i.e. gender defined the power dynamics in het couples, so after removing that structure what does romance look like? what does commitment look like? who’s responsible for answering those questions? what significance could those questions possibly hold on to when people are dying every day and are continually met with disgust rather than compassion? so suddenly this community is forced to come together without any blueprint for what it’s supposed to look like when they do
