Imagine a BAND AU! in which you’re Hange’s bully throughout high school for being openly queer and non-binary, because, well, first of all you’re a dickhead (fuck bullies), but it’s really because you’re very insecure about your own queerness being raised in a conservative and religious environment.
Unfortunately only your longtime best friend who also happens to be the most renown lesbian at school, Historia, knows that deep down, you’ll never willingly grace society’s, or your parents’, expectations of being a docile wife to a conventionally masculine and dominant husband. But you have to play the part and you somehow get lost in it. You can’t decipher reality from pretending.
And so not only you end up hanging out and going out with the bigoted chads of your school, like an animal sacrifice meant to appease the Gods’ wrath, (and here the Gods are your family), but you also end up displaying the same shitty behaviour, picking on any kind of “outcast”, and you have your heart set (lol) on Hange, the eccentric science obsessed nerdy queer freak. It’s the closest you’ll get to them.
Historia, despite feeling for you, absolutely condemns those acts and has to distance herself from you, whilst still keeping contacts, which kind of bewilders her girlfriend Ymir and their friends, including Hange. She tells them that deep down you have a good heart, she knows it, it’s just complicated and eventually you’ll learn and grow and change. She keeps your secret. For years.
And after those years, Hange thinks all of this, the homophobic straight girl who treats them like a freak, the bigoted chads who make disgusting comments about their body and sexuality, all the picking and bullying, is behind them. But then one day they see you perform with Historia’s band.
But it’s not in any venue ; it’s at a queer exclusive venue, in a bar where almost exclusively queer artists get to perform in order to uplift their art and their voices, a bar in which Hange plays regularly with their own band, the first stage on which they got to perform publicly. This place is dear, almost sacred to them after what they’ve personally endured, and by your hands specifically. To say they’re furious to see you there is a euphemism.
Turns out you were kicked out by your parents after they found out you were in fact not straight. And the only person willing to reach out a hand to you was Historia. So one thing leading to another, you became a member of her band. And so now you’re led to rub shoulders with the members of the other bands and artists in town, among which is Hange.
Ensures of this a long journey of confronting the past, resentment, making amends, forgiveness, enemies to lovers tension, angst, and whatnots.
