i kind of hate like. yes, chase is the Weird Catholic Guy of the cast and has so many Issues about it but. fandom reduces it to "he's religious and has trauma and has faith/guilt/worships house as god" and that's?? kind of the opposite?
from chase's own words, he has had nothing but positive interactions with the catholic church. his teachers were the closest thing to parents he had; he joined seminary because he wanted to continue that feeling of belonging; his reasons for failing had nothing to do with the priests or church. he doesn't have religious trauma! he also doesn't really have religion, like. he mentions repeatedly: he never actually had faith. he wanted to, he wishes he believed, he thinks it would have made his life easier, but chase never actually believed it. (damned if you do, chase, house training, house vs god, etc.) his story isn't "i once believed and now i do not," his story is one of being on the outside looking in, wanting to belong.
we see he's often a bit jealous of believers (here kitty, house vs god, damned if you do); he'd like to think god is real and there's a Plan, but he himself admits it's all BS: fascinatingly and notably, while both foreman and cameron turn to the hospital chapel and a "higher power" when hurt and devastated, chase doesn't. the only time we see him doing anything Religious is in desperation after dibala, in a moment he's trying anything. he goes to confession and he doesn't treat it as confession, as penance: he demands the priest fix him. he's not turning to god, he's looking for a Quick Fix. his reaction to moira's struggle with faith is to try and scientifically prove god is fake; he admits to brody that he'd "like" to believe in prayer and healing but that (to paraphrase here kitty) it is for the waiting room and not doctors.
and don't get me wrong, this is a weird and complicated and fascinating jumble of religion. chase has a very complex relationship to religion. but it's not he's the religious one. it's not he's the religious trauma guy. it's the opposite.
chase lacks faith. in anyone or anything. he doesn't believe cameron will stay; he doesn't believe in house or a higher power. he covers his own ass and protects himself; he doesn't rely on or depend on others in any real way. where foreman at his most vulnerable (euphoria) believes in house and lashes out/breaks down/infects cameron when that faith is tested, or where cameron continues to believe in a Better House, a more noble and true self who will reveal himself, chase... i can't think of a single moment where chase relied on or believed in anyone to save him or look out for him. after dibala, he tries to strongarm foreman into helping him cover things up. in the mistake, chase is left by house to make his own decision. "i had faith," he tells adams dryly in s8, but only after admitting earlier that he came back mostly out of boredom.
again, this ties back to chase's clear envy towards believers. he wants that. he wishes he had the faith healer's convictions, or the patient in here kitty's belief, or sister augustine's devotion (he is drawn to moira because he believes she, like him, is a fake). and it makes sense: chase has never had parental love, steady relationships. of course he likes the idea of god, of someone to believe in, someone who will repay that belief in support. but he doesn't. he relies on himself. not because he wants to, but because he doesn't believe anyone else will.
Oh pretty boy I love you so much
considering a lot of chase’s issues stem around living up to and around people’s expectations of him — in a different way than foreman and house and cameron, mind you: where they fight against how they are perceived chase is over here living up to expectations. he is the obedient son, the shameless asskisser, the self-serving one. house hates to be judged by his appearance but does nothing but judge chase for his: foreman rankles when he is assumed but repeatedly tells chase he’s a spoiled idiot.
but chase doesn’t fight these perceptions, is the thing. he hates being judged by his good looks, but he doesn’t do anything about it. he hates being accused of being a rat, but he is a rat: he hates being assumed a spoiled rich kid, but he doesn't push back on that presumption. he never wanted to be a doctor but here he is anyway. foreman and cameron are defiant which is why house likes them: chase is passive which is why house doesn’t.
chase could fight how he is perceived. we know it bothers him, it comes up many, many times: finding judas, private lives, the confession, cursed, the mistake, control... he is accused of being fake and uncaring, despite caring deeply: he is accused of being an idiot, despite being incredibly clever, he is accused of being a shallow fuckboy despite wanting connection and intimacy and love above all. chase doesn't have a great reputation in-universe. neither do foreman, or house, or cameron. but where the latter three fight and push and try to prove people wrong, chase shrugs and keeps his head down.
can they just be normal for once

House M.D. x Pokémon: Chase Edition (Updated):
EXPLANATIONS:
Alolan Raichu - surfboard
Slaking - “It is considered the laziest Pokémon, but even when it is lounging it's saving energy. It can exert a lot of power by releasing built-up energy all at once and is said to be feared for its immense strength.”
Sudowoodo - “Sudowoodo disguises itself as a tree and stands along paths to avoid being attacked.”
Floatzel - “Floatzel's sac developed as a result of chasing prey in the water. To help it dive, Floatzel can deflate its flotation sac, and then inflate it once again when it wishes to surface. Floatzel's sac allows it to not drown, even in stormy seas.” also i just thought it fit his vibe
Skitty - “It is known to chase its own tail and become dizzy from it. Although it can be difficult to earn its trust, it is very popular due to its adorable looks and behavior.”
Komala - “This Pokémon stays asleep from birth to death, staying this way because of its diet of certain leaves containing poison only Komala can break down, which induces sedative properties. While its expression sometimes changes as if it is aware of its surroundings, this appears to be a result of its dreams instead. It is able to eat, travel, and even battle without waking. If the log pillow it clings to is removed, it will be unable to sleep well and thrash wildly. However, it will sometimes cling to the arm of a Trainer it trusts. During a deep sleep, it stops moving altogether.”

smth i really appreciate is how much the animosity foreman has for chase dissolves following Finding Judas (S3E9), when chase stops backing house up before (a substantial amount of) solid evidence is introduced. im not going to go back to the episodes, just going off memory here, but i hope youll get the idea:
Finding Judas (S3E9):
"his theory correctly predicted the pancreatitis" "you might wanna wait until he actually tells us his theory before you start kissing his theory's ass"
"i wasn't kissing his arse." "it just looked that way from our angle. you on your knees, house bending over."
"i told you, just his nature. poor guy's hardwired to kiss ass."
Merry Little Christmas (S3E10)
Chase: olive oil wasn't in the kitchen; it was in the medicine cabinet / Cameron: ear infections are pretty common among CHH dwarves / Chase: or it's a symptom / Foreman: it certainly wouldn't indicate a pancreatic problem / Chase: OR house is wrong and it's a symptom
AND I LIVE FOR FOREMANS APPROVING PEN TAP BEFORE HE WRITES EAR INFECTIONS ON THE BOARD I LOVE IT
Words and Deeds (S3E11)
this is the one where Chase figures that the clean tox screen means that the firefighter's hiding chest pain
Foreman, referring to this assumption later, just straight up goes "Chase was right"
not a huge deal, but i found it interesting for the fact that it wasn't a standalone statement thrown in for dramatic effect. he could have easily listed the medical facts he was pointing out and left it at that, but chose to acknowledge chase's contribution: "won't stay stable. his blood test showed elevated troponins and CK-MB. chase was right: he was hiding chest pain, he's been having a whole series of heart attacks."
anyways, just interesting that his fairly strong aversion to the guy fades away (noticeably!) after chase declares (admittedly not to foreman) that he's "not waiting any more" for House's approval.
im hoping someone else can articulate what im feeling here idk 😭 apologies if the quotes are way off!

kinda crazy for chase to be That bothered by cameron not clearing out space in her apartment for the entire duration of their relationship yet not once saying anything until he literally had to. communicate brother
no literally whenever folks on reddit or whatever say she shut him out because she's evil i'm like. chase is so fucking insecure god i want to shake them both
genuinely like guys i’m begging you both to just say things to each other <\3 its so clearly a two sided issue
just it makes me insane!! the way they are both so terrified of ever burdening or having needs of the other, the way cameron keeps running because she's scared and denying she, who has feelings about everything, has feelings like these, because they're personal and they mean she could get hurt -- and we know it's denial and not "she doesn't care" because she doesn't do this with anyone else, because whenever she tries to explain herself it's "chase doesn't really like me, chase doesn't really want to be with me," because if it means nothing she won't get hurt
and then how chase is so afraid of ever asking for anything, even though every single time cameron falls over herself, like: move in with me, murder is okay, my morals don't matter, my career doesn't matter, but chase is only used to unattainable standards and being left behind and so if he ever asks for anything he'll run out of the finite supply of goodwill he has. and so he's always comforting her and reassuring her and when he needs something he runs away and shuts her out because obviously she'll leave if he does
like yes!! you two!! HAVE A CONVERSATION!! but also god, the way they are both so convinced what they have can't possibly be real, must be temporary, because that's the only kind of love they have ever known
while on some levels im glad it happened the way it did in the show on some levels i really wish we got the conversation between chase and thirteen when it was implied he told her about him killing dibala. how does he tell the story? does he tell her the full story? does he give himself more blame than he deserves? less? what parts of it does he emphasize and cling to? does he gloss over anything? how does he remember it and how does he represent it to others,,, i need to know.

why do literally all of chase's relationships start with woman loitering at his door
squishy plastic packer with the shimmery blue shit and a yellow fish floating inside vs oversized hyper realistic packer with fake veins and a 20 dollar upcharge because it comes in black
