MM/DD/YYYY date format is a natural extension of how we tend to speak--May first not the first of May. There are also a lot of situations where the month is the most relevant piece of information. It feels counterintuitive to not go from least to most specific or most to least specific but it has its functions. That being said, I think in a lot of cases it makes sense to write numerical dates in either DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY/MM/DD format, especially because with modern technology it's pretty easy to sort by month without relying on being able to quickly scan the first term. But MM/DD is the only format with Pi Day and Mole Day, so.
