Okay, for Star Wars Day I want to talk about what I love about The Thrawn Trilogy. Not sure if Iâve posted about this before or not.
[Spoilers for the plot of the whole trilogy below.]
Timothy Zahnâs written a wide range of sci-fi other that Star Wars; some of it I like (The Quadrail Trilogy), some of it I donât (the Cobra books; the first oneâs a Rambo-esque examination of the human fallout of a supersoldier program, but the others dive headfirst into militarism). He leans towards military sci-fi and cleber people with elaborate multilayered plans, and that does come out in the Thrawn Trilogy, but what really makes him stand out is something too often lacking in multi-author media: he respects the universe heâs in.
The Thrawn Trilogy is noticeably more idealistic than many of Zahnâs other books, because thatâs a foundational characteristic of the Star Wars universe. Zahnâs non-Star-Wars books are frequently ones where the heroes win by being clever and adaptable; Star Wars is a media where the heroes win by being good. Lukeâs redemption of Vader in Return of the Jedi is, to me, the moment at the absolute heart of Star Wars.
Zahn neither throws away his own literary instincts nor bends Star Wars to serve them; he weaves them together effectively. The thing I love the most about the Thrawn Trilogy is that the heroes win by being good. Thrawn is more nuanced and thoughtful than the Imperials of the original trilogy, and treats his own men better than Vader does; but the crucial difference between him versus the heroes is that he treats neutral characters as enemies or tools while Luke, Han, and Leia listen to them, trust them, take risks for them, even when the neutral characters look awfully like enemies. Kaarde takes Luke captive and is considering handing him over to Thrawn. Mara Jade openly and vociferously proclaims her desire to kill Luke â both to others and to his face. The Noghri carry out numerous very skilled attempts to capture Leia and hand her and her unborn twins over to the mad Jedi Master Joruus Câbaoth.
And Han and Luke work with Kaarde. Luke repeatedly trust and saves Mara. Luke rescues Kaarde when he is captured by Thrawn. Leia places herself at extreme risk by travelling to the Noghri homeworld to help free them from the deceptions of the empire. They would have good, pragmatic, sensible reasons to not do any of these things. But the fact that they do them, while the Empire lies and manipulates and coerces, is why they win. Mara helps Luke to destroy Câbaoth and the Empireâs cloning facilities [this was written pre-prequels, so itâs operating on different assumptions about the Clone Wars]. Kaarde comes in clinch with an alliance of smugglers in the main space battle. (The climaxâs combo of a land battle, a space battle, and a Jedi showdown is also a great nod to ROTJ.) Thrawnâs Noghri bodyguard assassinates him at a pivotal moment. Itâs what frustrates me so mich when people call this combination of events a deus ex machina, because itâs anything but â itâs the culmination of every moral choice the heroes have made over the course of the trilogy, including the ones they didnât recognize as choices because they were so ingrained (Luke!!! â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ âthis woman hates me and wants me dead. guess Iâll trust her unconditionally and give her whatever she needs.â). Even before the final battles, Mara is present to save Leia from a kidnapping because Luke went out of his way to save her when she was helpless.
Zahnâs own instincts and talents enrich the story without overriding its ability to feel like Star Wars. There are so, so, SO many stupid, arrogant villains in Star Wars Legends (I am looking at YOU Kebin J Anderson!), and next to them Thrawn is a breath of fresh air. Heâs calm, collected, smart, creative, adaptable, able to keep a cool head in the face of setbacks and modify his plans as needed, and yet heâs still villainous, and he loses because of villainous actions â actions that he or his adherents could easily regard simply as hard-headed pragmamtism. (In some of his more recent books Zahn has kind of bought into Thrawnâs hype and moved away from this, and in consequence I donât find those ones as good.) His right hand and the Watson to his Sherlock is Pellaeon, our Imperial viewpoint character and a good insight into a âtypicalâ Imperial â he believes in the Empire, hates the âRebellionâ, is bigoted, has few moral compunctions but lots of practical ones, and still feels like a three-dimensional character rather than a caricature. (Twenty years later in the Hand of Thrawn trilogy, heâs improved considerably as a person.)
And the additional asset of Zahnâs penchant for smart characters is that the heroes are also smart, thpugh their plans tend more towards off-the-cuff improvisation than long-term strategy. Zahn brongs in fantastic new characters like Mara and Karrde, but he integrates them effectively with Luke, Leia, and Han rather than using them to upstage the OT characters (a frequent temptation for shared-universe authors).
All of these are things that authors in some of the major events later on in Legends (New Jedi Order and onwards) conspicuously failed to do, and destroyed by enjoyment of the later books in consequence (I was flagging by the late NJO books and dropped off entirely about a chapter into Legacy of the Force). They imposed their own preconceptions, tone, or genre preferences on the series (pro tip: donât hire someone virulently anti-Jedi to write Jedi.) The played favourites with characters (each of three LOTF authors seems to have had their own key blorbo, and some NJO authors did as well). They wrote at cross purposes with each other and tried to pull the narrative in different directions (really, the attempt at a stronger shared continuity from NJO onwards was what made this a big problem; before that, continuity was fluid enough that you could mostly just ignore the book you didnât like and focus on the ones you did). And it makes me appreciate even more an author who had not only the talent but the humility to shape the tone of his work to fit the genre and universe it was located in.

NGL, this fic is my oldest WIP been there since â24. I was seconds away from trashing it more than once. I kept going back and picking at it, trying to mold the story so it made sense in the Knightfall timeline. I was tortured by the fact that RotS is both my favorite book and novel and psyched myself out of finishing it so many times because anything I write would pale in comparison to the Obikin bible which is the Rots novelization.
It wasnât until the last month or so that I reached the âpost it or trash itâ Marie Kondo point and decided it still brought joy to me. I hope it brings you joy too.Â

Update!!! Chapter Two now live! Here's some Jason thoughts to tease you:
....Once back in the family suit, Jason felt adrift. His thoughts flickered over his past and his present. He loved his life on Mandaloreâhis allit, his vode, his training, his missions. Everything about the planet and people sang to Jason in a way that nothing ever had before.
He cast his mind back to the darker days, the days -before- Jaster had found him. He remembered his early days, with Catherine and Willis Toddâthe nights with an empty belly watching as his mom drifted further and further into the drugs that would eventually claim her life. The days spent afraid that Willis would come home drunk and angryâthen the days when he didnât come home at all.
He thought about his life after Catherine diedâhis time on the streets. The Mandalorian in him flared in anger at the system that let homeless ade suffer and starve or worse at the hands of the uncaring and the corrupt.
Then, his feelings grew complicated as he remembered the day he met Batman after stealing the tires off of the Batmobileâthe craziness of getting settled into Bruce Wayneâs household and his role as Robin. His stomach clenched at the reminder of how he had arrived in Jasterâs care, broken, bleeding, and betrayed by his birth mother. He looked at the floor for a long time trying to sort out how he felt about all of that now.
His relationship with Bruce had gotten complicated, but Jason now wondered how much of that was bad parenting choices versus how much of that was teenage angst and rebellion. It had been his choice to chase Sheila all the way to Ethiopia. Was it really Bruceâs fault that he didnât arrive in time to save Jason from a mess that was the Jokerâs doing?
Jason didnât know anymore. What he did know was that, in a way, he was grateful. If not for that fateful happening, he would never have been brought into the care of Jaster and the Mandalorians. He would never have known what it was to be Vode An, brothers all. More than brothers, more than friendsâwarriors together in a way that made Jason feel complete.
He tapped his gauntlets together, just to hear the ring of the beskar. His second skin, his protection, his soul. Did he miss Earth? Jason couldnât say that he did. He certainly regretted the way things had left with Bruce, but Jason wouldnât trade his life on Mandalore for anything.
He thought, for just a moment, about what life would have been like had he remained on Earth. What it would have been like growing up with Bruce Wayne, training and patrolling alongside Batman as his partner. That thought was quickly extinguished by the remembrance that he would not have grown up at all. If not for the advanced medical care the Mandalorians had provided him, he would certainly have died. His life brutally cut short by Batmanâs enemy. He blew out a breath...

The writing but hit me again, and, thinking about my last story (which I hadn't planned on continuing), I got the idea: what if Jason's two parents enter the same space. Jaster Mereel, meet Batman. There's so much potential there! Batman on Mandalore! Fun times!
Summary:
Ten years after Jason Todd was blasted to the Star Wars universe by the Joker's bomb, Batman finds himself flung through dimensions courtesy of Darkseid. Found by Jaster Mereel's men, he is reunited with the son he thought lost.
Jaster comes face to face with the man who shaped his second son.
Jason must face the feelings he thought behind him, as they threaten his present happiness.
Together, they need to find a way forward and decide on a path for the future.

DCxDP bullet point fic: Nanny herding genius adventures
Until I feel better, I'm going to have to stick to bullet point fics for a while.
Danny has afternoon tea with Alfred often because he is the only one in the fifty-mile radius who understands having a genius ward who can and will run to trouble if left unsupervised. They trade stories and recipes, and Alfred often tells him he's the son he always wanted.
Tim's photography ability has never been highlighted like this before. He came home one day to find Danny hanging up his photos on the open spaces on the walls. Shocked, he told Danny that his parents had a very strict decor, but Danny claims an open spot on a wall was an open invitation. Tim considers it constructive vandalism and laughs menacingly whenever he adds a new photo.
Bruce went over to the Drakes' with Dick a few times for dinner. He finds it fascinating that each room has a theme- one room for photos of animals, another for Gotham daily street life shots, a Batman and Robin room, and one of Gotham structures, and so on- that are always changing. It's like an art gallery that updates every week.
Dick once realized Tim was following him across rooftops because he heard Danny swearing loudly while fist-fighting a group of goons through alleyways down below. Danny had turned away for only a second, and Tim climbed a six-floor building using the rain drain pipe. Danny was angry that it couldn't hold his weight to follow after Tim, so he had to run on foot, keeping an eye on the boy leaping across the rooftops. He accidentally ran into a goon while looking up, which led to a fight.
Bruce once jokingly asked Danny for a spar. He was shocked to find out Danny was really good and accidentally got so lost in the spar that he busted out Batman moves. Tim and Dick were watching, Tim cheering on Bruce (fanboy loyalty) which made Danny jealous so he fought harder. Bruce suspects that Danny was specially trained by the same Tibetan monks, and is suprised when Danny confirms he was (in the Ghost Zone the monks traded moves with the Far Frozen for medical knowledge.)
Danny became a nanny because of his Obsession. When the Portal in Amity Park closed, he was left fumbling, without anything to protect. He started training to control the itch and went through training in the Zone from different instructors and techniques. He's just as trained as Batman and can match him in skills. He was a private security guard and bodyguard, but it didn't satisfy the emotional urge to provide. The Drakes hired him cheaply for his skills because he really wanted to work with kids.
The Drakes have threatened to fire him multiple times because Danny hasn't stuck to the schedule they set for Tim. Each time he sends back "Hand me my termination face to face." They never do.
Despite his skills Danny isn't well know in the living world. Phantom has a reputation in the Infinite Realms, but only those that are connected to the afterlife are aware of it. Due to this he is constantly freaking people out by his skill set.
Tim keeps Danny on his toes because the boy can analyze and adapt extremely fast. He can't beat Danny in a physical sense, so he evades him by setting up traps or plans. Danny is surprised that Tim is actually safe due to the amount of danger he runs into while chasing the boy.
Despite the rumors, Danny and Bruce don't have a romantic relationship. If anything they share a kinship since Bruce and Tim are so similar. Danny actually did a secert DNA test assuming Bruce was the birth father. He isn't. The two are just like that. Both men regard eachother like brothers over the years.
Danny wasn't aware that Bruce and Dick were Batman and Robin. Over the years, he pulled a Fenton assumption, AKA he thought Batman and Robin were ghosts. His equipment beeps and detects them as such (Tim sabotage his equipment to pick up thier DNA as such. He wanted to protect Batman)
Jason eventually pops up, and Tim adores him WAY more than the others. The reason is that he can watch him go from a regular boy to Robin. Tim gets to watch the hero origin story.
Jason enjoys school. Danny uses this by asking the boy to tutor Tim. It's to give Jason some balance in his civilian life and get Tim to actually do his work. Tim has had a problem in school because nothing is challenging enough, and he sees no reason to put in effort. But being tutored by Robin? Tim is the top of the class in like a month.
Danny's ability to handle Tim and his perfect physique has captured many eyes. The reason the Drakes keep him around so much is that they lowkey have a crush on him. Danny is blind to this as he is greysexual. Tim knows his parents have a crush on him, so he always makes him wear tight shirts, combat pants, and boots whenever his parents come home. He distracts them with Danny's arms so they don't try to change the rules for raising him.
Tim does everything at night and has a large base of knowledge of Gotham's darkness moments. He is a walking supercomputer of illegal activity in Gotham. One morning, while Danny and Tim were having breakfast with the Waynes, Bruce was reading the newspaper, and Danny made a comment about the horrible shootout on the main page. Tim responded with "Yeah, that was Ted. He crossed the territory line because he's new. Black Mask was mad," and everyone just stared at him. Tim drew a map for all the physical addresses of Black Mask's men for Bruce that afternoon. Danny kept a copy and titled it "Places to NOT go."
Jason is not used to being followed around. Dick is and has always been a performer, so he is okay with Tim's eyes following him. Jason has brought it up with Danny that Tim is freaking him out. Danny has a talk with Tim but it fails to land completely. Tim decides that he can only follow Jason around if Jason can't see him. He starts stealing building schematics and finds ways to get into the walls or ceilings. Sometimes Jason hears thumps through the walls and has to play "Is that a rat or Tim?"
Danny and Bruce are the same age. Dick decided that's enough of a reason to match them up. He works with Tim to trick the men into romantic shenanigans. Once, Tim scheduled an entire boat ride on Gotham's cleanest river with floating lanterns, a private band featuring a harp, and a boat decked out in fairy lights. Dick told Bruce it was a charity event, and Tim told Danny it was an overnight trip with his schoo,l and one chaperone per kid was needed. Bruce showed up in a suit and Danny in silk pajamas.
Dick is still in his rebellious age. He and Bruce are at each other's throats constantly, but Danny shuts that down quickly. He isn't afraid of calling their BS, especially since Tim panics when he hears shouting. When Jason is around, Danny gives him a room in Drake's manor to hide in. Jason once witnessed Danny yell at Dick for being mean to him, and thinks he's "Bruce's cool ex that he fumbled."
Tim doesn't think his parents deserve to get into a throuple with Danny. They aren't cool or around enough, and if a relationship does bloom, he knows Danny will be saddled with all the emotional responsibility. He won't allow that. Tim only let's thier crush fester to manipulate them with it. Its how he loves.
sorry i can't make it. i have to watch my show that aired twenty years ago
Thereâs only one county in the world that has a whole movement dedicated to destroying it and I think that tells you a lot of what you need to know about antisemitism.
Like, yâall donât want to destroy North Korea, despite the fact that its human rights violations are demonstrably worse. Yâall donât want to destroy Russia, despite the fact that it has been actively at war with and trying to commit genocide against Ukraine.
There are plenty of countries doing worse things, with worse apartheid, worse racism, worse killings, worse acts of genocide, but none of those countries are on your lips.
Nope. Thereâs only one country in the world you think doesnât deserve to exist. And weirdly, itâs the only Jewish country in the world.

Okay so i've seen alot of talk about what type of job Danny would get out of Casper High and there's stuff about him becoming a teacher out there and i think that's cool but hear me out...
Janitor Danny.
He'd be working at Casper High obvi, so he can stay in Amity. it typically only requires a high school diploma to be a janitor, so he wouldn't need to worry about going to a college or university that's outside of Amity.
Not to mention the freedom with it! people wouldn't question why he's just gone, because you don't usually see janitors around anyways. he doesn't need to worry about people questioning him going into the janitors closet to go ghost because that's HIS closet. (that also means he can keep things inside of it. say a thermos or two?)
He could be in the most random ass place and ppl walking by would just be like. 'yea okay he's just cleaning that's cool đ' meanwhile Danny's dangling halfway out of a window frame on the top floor.
You also don't have to really talk to anyone else for it. just clean and then clean some more, there's like no interactions needed except for sparse greetings. most people tend to avoid janitors anyways be it courtesy or (especially in Danny's case) Creepy Janitor Vibes. ifykyk
Also he'd be spectacular at the job?? intangabilty to make things instantly dry or to reach the really hard spots, super strength to move heavy objects to sweep under them, automatic water through melting ecto-ice, flying around to reach high up areas, telekenosis to clean several things at once, <- even moreso with duplicates.
(He'd have to use these pretty discreetly or when nobody's there but they're still useful)
Taking into account how well and fast he is at cleaning, any suspicious shit he does can just be shoved under the rug because "who tf cares where he is this place is SPOTLESS. I'd rather not fire the one guy here who's actually doing his job well."
Could even work w/ multiple janitors working at Casper High, they'd just see him a bit more and maybe question some objects stashed away in closets (could also lead to some HILARIOUS identity reveal scenarios)
but yeah no. janitor danny đ
from schnee-gheist's tags: #also obsessed with the scene of some ghosts going in the school after-hours to mess around #'shouldnt we check for humans? dont wanna get caught.' 'WHO CARES. who's gonna be here anyways? some janitor? we're good.' #*insert Danny staring at them from the end of the hallway aggressively gripping a suspiciously-ectoplasm-covered-looking mop* #its just. so funny
you were the chosen one
