You know whatβs whack?
I searched the tag #pro Jily because I was looking for arguments to help me defend Jily because Snily is not my jam.
Anyway 90% of Jily defense posts are anti Snape. I was not bothered over the anti Snape bit because I figured most Jily stans would be anti Snape, so I mentally prepared myself before reading the posts in that tag.
What I saw was a disappointment.
The posts do one thing:
Explain why James is better than Snape
And thatβs pretty much it.
I legit donβt see people taking time to talk about Jily on itβs own merits. The argument is βSnily sucks therefore James and Lily are meant to be.β
β¦ I am supposed to cheer for Jily on the premise that itβs better than Snily? Not really an achievement tbh. It doesnβt take much for a ship to be better than Snily.
Real talk here: pretend Snape isnβt part of the equation, why do you ship Jily? Why do you think they work together?
What is it about Jamesβ personality, traits, characteristics, good deeds and what is about Lilyβs that make them great for each other?
Hi! So, I donβt know if Iβm necessarily the best person to respond, seeing as Iβve made no secret of my dislike for Snape, and, as much as I like to treat it as independent, thereβs definitely crossover between that and my preferences for other characters. That said, since youβre interested, hereβs some of my reasoning for liking Jily as a ship, along with my ideas on what draws other people in. Fair notice that itβs slightly more about their narrative than their traits, but they are interrelated.Β
Blood Dynamics:
James being a pure-blood and Lily being a Muggle-born has always been fascinating to me. In large part because Jamesβs family is a rare example of a well-off pure-blood family fairly integrated into a Muggle landscape. But his parents will always be wizards, just like Lilyβs parents will always be Muggles. In vastly different ways, they occupy the fringes of both worlds, and I think that can lead to them offering one another insights into what it feels like to be in that space.
As someone who reads the Potters as people of colour, thereβs another added aspect of balance in this regard. I get into more detail in this post, but essentially itβs much the same interest of how they occupy space in their two worlds, only in a more explicit way ofΒ βthis is how encounters with x type of prejudice work with x type of privilege.β
Whilst the two above points arenβt limited to James (replace him with say, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and all of it still applies) there is something particular I like about James and his passionate anti-blood prejudice stance. He wonβt even say the word βMudblood,β not directed at anyone, but even in abstract. He fights for Muggles in a war that he could easily have opted out of. He defies Voldemort not once, but three times, along with Lily. I think that kind of conviction when it comes to knowing what side heβs on would sit well with Lily, seeing as she was of equal conviction and bravery.
Mischievous Streak:
Admittedly, while some of Jamesβs pranking wasnβt exactly kind, his later years seem to imply that at a base level, his personality is a bit cheeky (describing his broom instead of a car to Vernon, offering random names to Muggle policemen in the prequel). And Lilyβs sense of humour seems to be somewhat similar! Slughorn describes her responses about saying she should be in Slytherin house asΒ βcheekyβ and calls herΒ βcharmingβ andΒ βvivacious.βΒ
And sheβs not above a physical prank either! Petunia describes her turning teacups into rats, something which she definitely wouldnβt have been allowed to do outside of Hogwarts, and seems like merely a ploy to annoy her sister. Not so crazy different from James using a dungbomb at school, or whatever Zonkoβs product was in vogue at the time (the language on the Maraudersβ map seems to imply that that not all of their mischief was simply picking fights).
Funnily enough, in one of the only glimpses we get of adult James and Lily, Lily is the one laughing at a potentially dangerous situation (her one-year-old zooming across a room at will and crashing into things) and James is the one running around in worry. It implies that her mischievous streak just might run a bit deeper than his, even though he was the bigger public spectacle. I love that about them, and even more so that it takes place in a domestic setting.Β
Compassion:
This point does rely on Snapeβs presence, but only insofar as he is a narrative device. In SWM, we get a good look at Lilyβs compassion. She refuses to stand by while someone is being hexed for no reason. Though James is popular, and clearly good with a wand, she has no hesitation in intervening. Her compassion has a limit (which I personally like: she will not be trampled on for anyoneβs sake) but her objection marks her as someone who wonβt stand by idly as someone gets hurt. Notably, Snape is not explicitly marked as her friend in this scene, so I have to believe that compassion is not exclusive to people she deems friends.Β
In that same vein, when Sirius sends Snape out into the danger of the Whomping Willow at the full moon, James displays his compassion there. There are many arguments as to why he might have done it, but I think Dumbledoreβs words in the first book are a strong implication that the action wouldβve been much easier to forgive if had been done for selfish reasons instead ofΒ βI did this because every human life has value and I am willing to put myself in the line of fire to stand by that conviction.β Their interventions for the same character take place under vastly different circumstances, but ultimately it shows them to be of similar make. People who will not stand aside, and believe strongly in doing what they perceive to be righteous. It relates to the point on blood dynamics, but also stands alone as a reflection of two people who have strong core values that align.Β
Power Couple:Β
People love some good fictional badasses, and Lily and James are just that. Three times before theyβre twenty-one, they go up against the darkest, most powerful wizard in the world together and survive.
And their skills arenβt necessarily the same, either! Lilyβs talents are most notably in Potions and Charms, while James has a clear proclivity for Transfiguration (and generally, hexes). Theyβre both strongly implied to be good duelers as well. The potential for tag teaming, helping each other in their areas of expertise, or just generally showing the world that the two of them are an impressive duo is fun to imagine.Β
Tropes Abound:
Coworkers - Lily and James were Head Girl and Boy together, which means that in seventh year theyβd have to spend time together, regardless of what state their relationship was in. Shared spaces, worries about crossing professional boundaries, unresolved sexual tension, etc. Theyβre all available within their narrative!
Enemies (to Friends) to Lovers - Though I wouldnβt necessarily call James and Lily enemies in SWM, seeing as JKR makes a point to establish that Lily didnβt hate James, they were definitely at odds. And itβs a very common fictional trope to go from that to eventually falling in love, and all the subtropes that coming with that, like panicking over being attracted to someone with whom youβre annoyed, or realizing for the first time that you have some common ground, etc. And because we really donβt have much to work with in terms of sixth year canon, the progression rate can be as fast or slow as you choose to see it.
Soulmates - The whole patronus aspect of HP fuels the soulmate trope pretty well, but in particular with James and Lily people love that their patronus are not quite the exact same. Tonksβ patronus is the same as Remusβs, and thatβs because of her love for him, but in James and Lilyβs case, with a stag and doe it kind of seems like they just happened to have matching souls. Thatβs also a pretty lovely idea.Β
Filling in the Blanks:
Very much in line with the last point, but more broad. Strangely enough, I think one of the strongest reasons people are so very interested in this ship is because we donβt get a lot of information about it. Readers, like Harry, like looking at the explosive nature of James and Lilyβs interactions in SWM and wonder,Β βWhat happened there? How did you go from Point A to Point B?β And yes, while JKR gives the explanation James calming down a bit in some ways (minus his continued rivalry) itβs not necessarily enough to develop a full picture. And thatβs what people like! The opportunity to look at the ship and go,Β βHereβs how I think they got from Point A to Point B.β And though there are plenty of common threads, it can be a different take every time! The opportunity to build oneβs own ideas into the canonical landscape is very appealing.Β
The impact of tragedy/destiny on this point is also quite compelling as a reader. In total, the Potters had a maximum of four years together. Four years that were marked by war, and struggle, and being in hiding. The few glimpses we get into their domestic life seem to imply that they loved each other very deeply and made the best of the time they were given, but people are drawn to a fated downfall of world-changing romance. Itβs a closed narrative, but one that offers a lot of emotional impact.Β
I know a lot of these ideas are not exclusive to this ship or their traits, but they work in conjunction with one another to create something with vast possibilities. And they donβt have to be exclusive to their narrative. Sometimes, people like something because itβs interesting, not because itβs unique! I hope this is the kind of reflection you were looking for. I donβt hope to convince anyone, but I did want to explain why I think it has appeal!Β
Baby Harry riding on his toy broom wasn't dangerous and James wasn't worried either lol...he was playfully trying to catch his son. Both of his parents were watching Harry and I doubt the broom was going fast.
Hey, what if Merlin was the nameless guy who invented magic and thatβs why people keep referring to him all the time?
For reference, the asker is referring to this.
Nope.
Merlinβs too young, too British (Britain of course being a very different thing back then but never mind that), heβs never cited as doing this, and all of History of Magic is likely completely made up anyway.
Per Arthurian legend, Arthur was king around the 5th to 6th century A.D.Β One of the big themes in Arthurian Legend is the change from paganism to Christianity in the British Isles.
Itβs implied that the use of wands has been around for much longer than this. Ollivanderβs sign states that his store was founded in 382 B.C. (Which is probably wrong, as this was long before the emperor Caesar invaded and Claudius founded the Roman Britain colony, and I canβt imagine Roman wizards getting their first, but thatβs for a later point in this meta).
Regardless, I believe wand craft predates Merlin by a number of centuries and probably arrived with the Roman wizards either during Caesarβs attempted conquest or Claudiusβ actual conquest.
Which brings me to my next point. Merlin is presumably British (given he was helping Arthur defend Britain against the Saxons). While Latin was the language of the world, and his inventing it could explain why the Latin wizards use is so ass backward, to me he doesnβt have the same imperative to make it in Latin.
Rome is gone, and while all the scholars and the church use Latin, we have no indication this holds true for the druids/magic users. In fact, they probably adamantly donβt use Latin and thereβs still a bitter community of Welsh and Irish druids who refuse to send their children to the English Hogwarts, only use staves, and only use Celtic magic.
The Wizarding World just pretends these people donβt exist.
Merlin is very focused on Britain per the legends, not the world at large let alone the continent, and as a result I donβt think heβd go out of his way to make the wand system in a language he doesnβt fully grasp.
Whoever made the magic system had a very strong reason to do so in Latin.
Further, if Merlin was the founder of the modern system of magic, it would be reflected in a) Arthurian legend and b) in the wizarding world. It never is, granted no one ever cites anything Merlin does, but if he founded magic itself you better believe theyβd be talking about it.Β
And lastly, all of History of Magic is likely made up.
History as dissecting what truly happened and why is a very modern discipline and one I donβt think the Wizarding World has adopted. In antiquity, history was often written as a) propaganda for the current emperor b) as sort of a moral tale that encompasses the spirit of whoever youβre talking about.
So the historian would write this tale starring Plato, Socrates, etc. that never actually happened.Β
Take Arthurian Legend, histories were written about it but itβs interwoven with folk lore and epics. Itβs generally agreed upon that King Arthur didnβt actually exist, even if you remove all the holy grails, the lady in lakes, and wizards.
Where am I going with this?
I donβt think Merlin exists.
Iβm not even sure the Founders exist to be frank.
The historical citing for them is all over the place.
The Founders are said to have built Hogwarts 1,000 years ago... and yet they built a castle that should be dated centuries later. Salazar Slytherin is cited as having very anti muggle born sentiments, implied because of witch burnings... the mass witch burnings also happening centuries later. The Founders supposedly predate Merlin and took him as a student, and yet Arthurian Legend paints for us a very different figure. More, the Wizarding World itself does too, Merlin is a centralizing and founding figure of the country... and yet he was an apprentice to the founders?
All of this reeks of popular legend that has been added to and embellished throughout the centuries by historian wizards. The four founders might exist, but they likely didnβt build Hogwarts.
Merlin, who is never really cited for anything specific, likely never existed in the first place and, like in our own world, is a figure of Arthurian legend.
On this note, the Grey Lady is a con woman.
She claims to be Rowena Ravenclawβs daughter, this romantic, tragic figure who stole her motherβs treasure and absconded to the other end of Europe. The baron whoβd always loved her tracked her down, and when she rejected him he killed them both. This same guy happens to be a Hogwarts ghost too, and he just so happens to be the creepy one.
In light of the Founders being historically impossible people, I think odds are the Grey Lady made this up. She was a common thief who got herself killed, now she spins a good story to save face.
You're just making stuff up lol we are told her story so it's pretty ridiculous to ignore it, your opinion does not matter because you did not write the books... @therealvinelle
Ok, if all the founders are imaginary (not sure they are historical or not) then who constructed the chamber of secrets?
I don't think the founders exist.
Someone else or perhaps even multiple people.
Hogwarts is very strange in that it looks extremely planned, very new, and an oddly cohesive fortress that only has the aesthetics of a fortress and none of the realities one would expect from a castle.
The chamber is a bit of an exception though. It doesn't cleanly connect to the rest of the school, its entrance is highly obscured and can only be opened by those with a certain gene, and it's disconnected from the main castle itself.
This hints, as canon says actually, that it was built later.
We don't see much of the inside of the chamber, so it's hard to say, but I imagine multiple people could have worked on it. You have the main chamber Harry saw which is... very grandiose but kind of pointless, you have wherever the hell the basilisk is and whoever put a basilisk down there.
I don't think it has to be a single person and I imagine it was added to over time/someone stuffed a basilisk down there because they thought that was a great idea.
Over time, as its existence is increasingly rumored, you have this tale growing that Salazar Slytherin made it himself to store his basilisk because... Muggleborns.
Point is, just because it's built doesn't mean a guy named Salazar Slytherin had to do it.
Well, they do exist so what you say does not matter when in the story said they are real people.
I know this is JKR's fault but people have got to stop treating the Slytherin lineage as some real thing Tom Riddle has tangible proof of; there would be zero record of this in any genealogy book (DH confirms this).
Given that more than 25% of Britain is descended from William the Conqueror and everyone with European ancestry is a descendant of Charlemagne, if Slytherin has any living descendants at all, this means a large percentage of Britain is descended from him.
The fact that Tom viewed this memory is the only reason he thinks he's descended from Slytherin:
βSee this?β he bellowed at Ogden, shaking a heavy gold locket at him, while Merope spluttered and gasped for breath. βI see it, I see it!β said Ogden hastily. βSlytherinβs!β yelled Gaunt. βSalazar Slytherinβs! Weβre his last living descendants, what do you say to that, eh?β [...] βSo!β said Gaunt triumphantly, as though he had just proved a complicated point beyond all possible dispute. βDonβt you go talking to us as if weβre dirt on your shoes! Generations of purebloods, wizards all β more than you can say, I donβt doubt!β [...] βIs it true?β said Gaunt in a deadly voice, advancing a step or two toward the terrified girl. βMy daughter β pure-blooded descendant of Salazar Slytherin β hankering after a filthy, dirt-veined Muggle?β (HBP)
Note that Dumbledore viewed this same memory, then tells Harry that Tom is the "last living descendant of Slytherin" in CoS. Marvolo is... about as reliable as Umbridge here (though the heirloom itself may be truly Slytherin's, which they could've acquired from anywhere).
βOh yes β an old family heirloom,β she said, patting the locket lying on her large bosom. βThe S stands for Selwyn... I am related to the Selwyns... Indeed, there are few pure-blood families to whom I am not related... A pity,β she continued in a louder voice, flicking through Mrs. Cattermoleβs questionnaire, βthat the same cannot be said for you. βParentsβ professions: greengrocers.ββ (DH)
The only reason Harry thinks he's descended from the Peverells is because he saw that same memory and, just like Tom and Dumbledore, is going off Marvolo's words and that the Potters happen to have a Peverell heirloom (confirming there's no mention of the Potters or any other family being descended from the Peverells in genealogy books, because if there was, they'd be listed as the ancestors of way too many families)
βThe only place Iβve managed to find the name βPeverellβ is Natureβs Nobility: A Wizarding Genealogy [...] It lists the pure-blood families that are now extinct in the male line. Apparently the Peverells were one of the earliest families to vanish.β βIt means the nameβs died out,β said Hermione, βcenturies ago, in the case of the Peverells. They could still have descendants, though, theyβd just be called something different.β And then it came to Harry in one shining piece, the memory that had stirred at the sound of the name βPeverellβ: a filthy old man brandishing an ugly ring in the face of a Ministry official, and he cried aloud, βMarvolo Gaunt! [...] You-Know-Whoβs grandfather! In the Pensieve! With Dumbledore! Marvolo Gaunt said he was descended from the Peverells!β [...] βIgnotus Peverell is buried in Godricβs Hollow...β Harry was walking blindly around the tent, feeling as though great new vistas of truth were opening all around him. βHeβs my ancestor! Iβm descended from the third brother! It all makes sense!β (DH)
And similarly:
βHelga Hufflepuffβs, as you very well know, you clever boy!β said Hepzibah [...] βDidnβt I tell you I was distantly descended? This has been handed down in the family for years and years.β (HBP)
The Smiths happen to have a confirmed Hufflepuff heirloom, and their family likely has been sorted in Hufflepuff for generations, so at some point they start claiming they're "distantly descended!!!1!" to increase their self-importance (again, most of Britain would be descended from the Founders in some way, and from the Peverells, etc.); likewise, the Gaunts being Parselmouths (an inherited ability associated with Slytherin, who wasn't the only Parselmouth in existence, just the most famous one; I assume there were/are many others worldwide) and acquired a Slytherin artifact at some point, and started claiming they're Slytherin's descendants. For the Smiths though, their supposed Hufflepuff ancestry is mostly an afterthought; for the Gaunts it isn't, because they're clutching at social status they've lost. We see it gives them no material power (and the only reason it gave Tom any is because he used a legend to "prove" his status).
(Idk whatβs going on with that Chamber but the legend as it exists definitely is Not true and other Parselmouth have clearly found it before, per the entrance being connected to sinks. I tend to agree with this post that it was added to over time).
It definitely was a real thing...the Gaunts married into the families so it's pretty ridiculous to think the Gaunts are lying because they are crazy poor people. People are being delusional and making stuff up. It's fine to theorize but ignoring the everything stated in the books and making stuff up is odd.

Scattered Thoughts on Tom Riddle's Horcruxes
- we only have Dumbledoreβs guesses on the deaths Tom used for his horcruxes. Logically, the Horcrux ritual needs to be planned in advance with intent to channel the power of the death, and the soul splits and latches onto the prepared object at the moment of murder, based on other examples of sacrificial magic - i.e. Lilyβs sacrificial magic, Tom using Ginnyβs death to escape the diary (he gets stronger as the life is seeping out of Ginny), the Flesh Blood Bone rebirth potion - while it also uses bones of his long dead father, at least one third requires the sacrifice to be part of someone alive during the ritual ("flesh of the servant, willingly given" re: Peterβs hand, and likely "blood of the enemy, forcibly taken" too). Peter also takes each part of the "sacrifice" from the source at the time of the potion brewing/ritual, and the location of the brewing may be significant too. So Tom can't just murder someone and then decide to "use" that death later (of course there's plenty of Dark magic where he can just use the dead body later, but I think horcruxes need that intentional life sacrifice).
Oh, Tom Riddle would definitely wear a horcrux to school and nobody knew he was making horcruxes so nobody would have batted a eye. All what Tom was wearing was a ring, the ring doesn't have "horcrux" written on the ring. Tom Jr's father and Myrtle were used to make a horcrux, JKR said so.
Can I ask why Lily/James is your NOTP? (I personally don't... really understand how they ended up together and don't think they would have stayed together - or at least not happily - had they lived but you seem to like them even less, so I'm wondering!)
Iβm putting this answer under a cut because I think itβs likely to upset a lot of people, but the tl;dr is that we see James behave sexually violently towards her on screen and I very much doubt that changed later.
People hate a character so much that they become delusional and make up shit about them lol James and Lily were not in a dysfunctional relationship and James was not abusive to Lily or Harry. Their marriage was normal and happy, James adored his family to the point that he died trying to give his family some time to escape. Wow, what a evil man! This evil man also gave Sirius comfort, love, and a place to stay after his family disowned him and he wanted to support his other friend with his werewolf transformations. This evil man was also not prejudice against muggles or muggle borns unlike Snape. If you people can like a jackass like Snape and look past his actions then why can't people do the same for James? James matured and changed as a person that the girl that despised him half of her school life saw it so why can't fans? None of you believe people especially children can redeem themselves or what?
Could you expand on the James was implied to be abusive?
So, to clarify, everything in this meta isnβt necessarily my interpretation. Some of it is, but some is in fact the opposite of my own interpretation (esp. re: Snape). But Iβm going for a Doylist lens for once and trying to unweave what JKR was trying to do. This isn't normally how I analyze the text - but it's helpful to know so people can develop a more informed version of their interpretations.
I think JKR intended Jily as, at best, a dysfunctional marriage where they werenβt truly in love, and at worst, an abusive one. Iβve seen speculations that JKR based James on her abusive ex-husband - Iβm not sure where that comes from or is true, it might be entirely made up, but Iβm mentioning it here (ETA: the photograph of her with her ex-husband VERY strongly resembles Jily's appearance, so I see it now).
1.0 In Photographs
Photographs are regularly used in canon to show family estrangement and rejection, and in this section I'll demonstrate how they're used for the same purpose with James and Lily.
To start off, we see James and Lily in the Mirror of Erised, standing next to each other - but remember what the inscription on the frame means (I show not your face but your heart's desire), and what Dumbledore says:
This is very ridiculous lol James wasn't abusive to Lily and their relationship wasn't dysfunctional, it's ridiculous to thing so. People seem to be unable to see James as a complex character and can't move on from what child James did in the past so they make up stuff and become delusional. James is not a demon in disguise, if Snape can be a complex person and people can forget about what Snape did in the past then people need to do the same thing with James. JKR making characters after ex boyfriends means nothing in the story and no where said that she based James Potter after someone toxic in her life.
little Tommy has been bustedΒ
Have been going back and re-reading the Harry Potter books, mainly out of nostalgic curiosity. Maybe itβs just because Iβm reading them as an adult but even with Rowlingβs heavy handed attempts to make him a fated villain the Tom Riddle origin story is fucking tragic.
- Mother drugs and rapes his muggle father. Father, rightfully, wants nothing to do with his abuser or, tragically, his kid.
- Mother dies after giving birth at the muggle orphanage, London 1926. Kid has no good way to find any of his family so heβs stuck there, raised at the orphanage. A grim place, shabby.
- But heβs also an underage wizard surrounded by muggles. So thatβs a recipe for disaster, I mean, we all know what kids are like when thereβs an odd kid around. Muggle matron is no help, she even attempts to send him to an insane asylum. In 1930s Britain, even the suggestion of that would have been terrifying, they still fucking lobotomized people back then. And I wouldnβt imagine muggle school was much better, for a weird orphan back when corporal punishment was still very much a thing.
- Also living in muggle London during his first 11 years he would have lived through an influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, only the very beginning of the slum clearings, the Spanish Civil War refugee crisis, and right before he goes to Hogwarts Nazi annexation of Austria and government issuance of gas masks to the entire population.
Which like, it could be argued that he wasnβt aware of any of this, but kids are really smart, Riddle especially so, so Iβm going to extrapolate and assume he was at least vaguely aware when shit was hitting the fan. Which is never a good thing ever when youβre an orphan, sitting at the bottom of the countryβs social ladder.
- Gets sent to Hogwarts in 1938. Maybe itβs just the movie adaptation but Dumbledore (Riddleβs first real interaction with the Wizarding world) is cold and stern and unwelcoming and unfriendly to Riddle. Not a great start. Iβve read some threads where people say Dumbledore could tell Riddle was evil? But. Nah. Not buying that excuse. Riddleβs fucking 11 years old. You donβt just write someone off at that age, Dumbles screwed the pooch on that one.
- Riddle then gets sorted into Slytherin. Which doesnβt mean anything in and of itself. But Dumbledore acts like it does, so while Riddle gets surrounded by pure blood rhetoric from his classmates heβs got no welcoming adult with opposing viewpoint to also learn from.
- While heβs at school he probably gets singled out a bit by his peers for being an orphan and a half-blood. Pushing him to try and find some heritage clout. Especially with Grindelwaldβs blood purity bs on the rise. Especially when heβs a kid who got singled out growing up for being a wizard and now heβs being singled out again for something heβs got no control over. And itβs doubtful Slughorn helps, heβs just as much into that blood bs as others are.
- He also has to keep going back to the orphanage during the summer because neither the headmaster nor any of the faculty (looking at you Dumbledore) nor any of his βfriendsβ parents help him find any other sort of permanent living situation.
- Because of this lack of other housing options, Riddle is forced to go back to London during his summers β during the height of fucking WWII!! Like the books make it very clear he goes back to the orphanage, not some place else. So even though Operation Pied Piper begins on September 1 1939. and literally as heβs leaving for Hogwarts for his second year muggle children are getting evacuated from London, itβs implied that his orphanage was so much in the slums that they didnβt get the same evacuation plan as wealthier neighborhoods. By the time heβs done with his 2nd year at Hogwarts WWII is well underway. He would have experienced rationing, bombing raids (London was first bombed August 24 1940), large-scale alien internment, Churchill speeches (iykyk), probably propaganda films like the Next of Kin, the Normandy landings would have happened the summer before his 7th year at Hogwarts, and WWII ends right as heβs leaving Hogwarts.
And he doesnβt get a break from the death and horror news in the wizarding world because the war with Gindlewald is from 1926-1945.
Like, little wonder the kid became so obsessed with not dying.
Like, I will never argue that killing animals, and harming kids, and all the other shit he got up to is okay. But like. Villains arenβt born, theyβre made. Itβs well documented that sociopathy isnβt an automatic ticket to a life of crime and villainy, itβs a condition that can be taken care of properly, or it can be neglected.
And so many of the ideas he gets: fear of death, muggle inferiority and evilness, might makes right. Like we can see clear as day where these ideas come from in environments he grows up in.
And with so many shit adults in his life not giving him proper care and attention Tom Riddle almost never had a chance of coming out well adjusted. Very much the case that Dumbledore and Mrs Cole, and Slughorn and others could have put him on a different trajectory but in deciding there was something wrong with him a and heβs already a lost cause β the adults in his life made him become a lost cause.
Idk man. The tragedy of it hits different as an adult.
Um JKR isn't trying to "demonize" Tom Riddle Jr lol all what she is doing is just showing why Tom Riddle Jr is so fucked in the head and how his life shaped him as a person. Also you're forgetting that his story is being told by other people not Tom Riddle Jr himself. Having a sad backstory doesn't mean people can't turn into bad people and having a sad backstory doesn't justify anything what Tom Riddle Jr decided to do in the future. I don't get what you're trying to say...are you just ignoring what this miserable sad little boy turned into?! I feel sorry for the guy too but while he was still in school he killed some teen girl accidentally but felt no remorse over it and used her diary to use as his horcrux like killing was just a little hobby of his.
I think you missed the point.
Villains like Voldemort arenβt born. Theyβre made. And specifically Lord Voldemort was created by a society that raised but failed to take care of and teach Tom Riddle.
As I said in my post, thereβs no justification for the harm he did. But thereβs also no justification for adults neglecting and bullying and condemning a child. I donβt give fuck who that child is.
Thatβs the real difference between Tom and Harry. Thatβs the tragedy of Tom Riddle.
Itβs not just that one made choices and the other didnβt. They both get hurt. They both get betrayed. They both get neglected. But one learned fucked up methods for coping with his trauma and never had family or friends or mentors to show him differently. And the other had a support system, such as it was.
This isnβt me saying Voldemort isnβt bad. This isnβt me saying Tom Riddle never did anything wrong. This is me just acknowledging as an adult now rereading the text that Tom Riddle as a child and young student isnβt destined and doomed to become He Who Must Not Be Named.
Tom Riddle becomes Lord Voldemort because no one, not his family, not his classmates, not Dumbledore, not Slughorn, not Dippet, not any of his classmates parents β none of them loved him unconditionally for just being Tom.
And so he never learns what love is. He learns about fear and power and the struggle for survival instead. And so he becomes a monster.
No, i think you missed the point, you shouldn't be justifying Voldemort's/Tom's actions just because he had a sad backstory and a mental illness. The only person to blame for how Tom Riddle came out is himself, that's it. Tom did not think there was anything wrong with him so why would he ask for help or allow people to help him? His friends probably did tell Tom that he could stay with them but he declined or never asked them because that'll be humiliating. Asking one of his friends if he can stay with them because he doesn't want to go back to the orphanage isn't something he'll do, that'll hurt his pride so that's why he asked the headmaster if he can stay at hogwarts instead. He's not staying at anybody's house, he's staying at his favorite place in the world, and is living independently the way Tom always liked it. Tom Riddle's friends adored him so they would have let Tom stay with them if he asked. The headmaster would have said "yes" if the school wasn't highly dangerous because of what Tom did, Tom's own actions bit himself in the ass. Why would any teacher let one of their students stay at a school with a monster that kills people in it's walls? I love Tom Riddle as a character too and think his story is very interesting to the point that it deserves its own story but we shouldn't baby him or blame/villainize anybody for how he turned out. Mrs. Cole did try to help him, she got doctors to take a look at him but Tom just caused more problems and she didn't know what to do. Tom didn't like Dumbledore so why would he want his help? Then with Slughorn, Tom Riddle is not the type of person to ask anybody for help especially for something as humiliating as asking for a home to stay at because he doesn't want to go back to the orphanage.

Hi, there is controversial ask I want to ask. Please don't hate me and feel free to ignore if this ask displeases you. This question is about Lily Evans. Lily Evans is seen kind by almost every one who remembers her. However part of me is confused that why would someone so kind choose James Potter out of everyone. Of course she wouldn't choose snape because he called her mudblood but it seemed that she would have forgiven him had he stopped associating with death eaters which he refused but she chooses James Potter out of everyone? Yes, James Potter is rich, handsome popular quidditch pure blood wizard. I do see the appeal but didn't she reject him because he was a bully. I know it's mentioned several times that he changed but I still feel that even if he did change going to him for romantic relationship and marriage knowing what cruel bully he was, he bullied her then close friend snape and threatened to take off his pant in public. It's mentioned that wizards wear nothing underneath. So basically exposing snape in front of everyone. Sirius Black also purposefully told snape location of Remus Lupin. Remus Lupin would be in werewolf form. Snape was going where Remus Lupin was unaware of the danger. He would kill him but fortunately James Potter stopped him in time. Though I suppose to protect his friend from azkaban than out of goodwill. I have tough time knowing that Lily Evans despite knowing all this would purposefully would hang around people like them. Even marry one of them. Yes, people change but things they did makes me confused that how she went past it and decided to date and later marry him aka James Potter. Had she maintained some sort of better relationship and or friendship I would still understand but falling in love with someone who tried to strip someone bare and him being best friend with someone who almost had someone killed, like I am confused? How did she see forget all that? I always personally thought that either Lily Evans didn't know the extent of it or maybe...... she wasn't as nice as people made out to be but since she is already dead and sacrificed herself for her son she is seen good by everyone and maybe people refuse to tell harry potter the truth. I also remember in one of your asks you mentioned that Lily Evans found snape being bullied funny "Lily, even as Snape's best friend, can't help but find the bullying funny for just a moment. It means her sense of humor can be on the crueler side at times."
Also these dialogues
"I know your theory," said Lily, and she sounded cold. "Why are you so obsessed with them anyway? Why do you care what they're doing at night?"
"I'm just trying to show you they're not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are."
Snape's whole face contorted and he spluttered, "Saved? Saved? You think he was playing the hero? He was saving his neck and his friends' too! You're not going to- I won't let you-"
"Let me? Let me?"
Lily's bright green eyes were slits. Snape backtracked at once. "I didn't mean- I just don't want to see you made a fool of- He fancies you, James Potter fancies you!" The words seemed wrenched from him against his will. "And he's not... everyone thinks... big Quidditch hero-"
I mean snape's reaction makes sense to me but not Lily Evans reaction. Perhaps I am overthinking? What do you think? Am I wrong? Lily Evans is most loved in the fandom therefore I was always afraid to ask my thoughts and doubts regarding her. I mean if I saw someone hanging out with bullies I would think they must be like them after all flocks of the same feathers fly together. Your thoughts?
This isn't offensive at all. I mean, I think she has the potential to be a fascinating character, and I like her a lot. That being said, she's fictional, I don't get offended over hate towards Harry (my favourite character in the series) or by different interpretations of him. I could get annoyed, sure, I can disagree and do so plenty, but he's fictional, and getting offended over opinions of fictional characters is a waste of time and energy. Also, nothing's wrong with an unconventional reading β it can be quite fun sometimes, actually.
And Lily is a character who has some aspects open to interpretation. Since, like James, most people (except Snape) only say good things about them. After all, you don't speak ill of the dead β especially to their orphaned son who saved your world.
That being said, there are a few things we know for sure about her:
It's annoying how people fail to see James as a imperfect person but a good man instead of just a demon that bullied Snape and other students when he was a child. Lily saw that he changed and matured (unlike Snape) as a person and she started to like him as a person then wanted to date him. If Lily saw good in the boy that she despised half of her school life why can't fans do the same?! She did not date him because she has a crueler side to her and she liked how he and his friends bullied Snape and other students?! She didn't think James and Sirius' bullying ways were hilarious in secret. Lily smiling for a second doesn't mean anything, kids laugh/smile at inappropriate times all the time but Lily caught herself right away because she knew it was wrong for the situation. Harry only saw his mother smiling in that moment because he was looking at her, nobody else noticed lily smiling. People let characters like Snape and Draco be complex characters (people go as far as justify their actions/behavior and babying them like they're poor little sad angels that did nothing wrong (draco and Snape) .) so why can't James get the same treatment? The man died trying to protect his baby son and his wife, the man wanted to fight in the order to make the world a better place, this man gave his friend Sirius who was disowned comfort, love and a place to stay, And he wanted to help his other friend Remus with his transformations and be there for him during his transformations. James Potter is not a demon who was the villain the whole time, he is a flawed but a great man deep down.
Not only is Tom Sr's victimhood diminished, he's made out to be the bad guy for escaping his rapist "wife" and understandably wanting nothing to do with a child that was forced on him (rather literally).
If I got pregnant via love potion there's no way I'm raising the kid or staying with their rapist dad. π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ
I mean, I do feel sorry for the kid, heβs not to blame for any of it. But yeah, I mean, that man clearly had no reason to stay with a woman who literally bewitched him in order to abuse him and get a child out of it. And the situation is treated as if it werenβt sexual assault, but it absolutely is, thereβs no conscious consent anywhere in that story. Honestly, Rowling is completely unhinged with this.
The situation is treated as sexual assault in the books?! Lol what are you two talking about?! No where in the books has characters justifying what Merope did to Tom Sr or hated on Tom Riddle Senior for leaving Merope and the baby he did not consent to making. What Merope did wasn't treated as a good thing in the books...Dumbledore even called what Merope did as "enslaving"?! What book are you two reading?!
Some practice concepts (?) of young Tom riddle :3
Tea time with Tom Riddle for @augustuscaesarsalad
Contrary to popular belief, I love drawing characters I don't usually draw. I just never remember to draw them. Thank Caesar Salad for reminding me and planting this image in my head.
Everyone look at this masterpiece right now!!!
