And on the topic of the ‘crazy ex girlfriend’, a man I know was in a long term relationship with a woman with severe bipolar disorder who was off and on meth and became abusive when she was using. He never called her his crazy ex. He never spoke about her like she was an inhuman piece of shit born simply to inconvenience him. He did not dehumanize her. He was candid about how she was a destructive force in his life and he realized he could not help or save her and that he had wasted years trying to get her out of a quagmire she didn’t want to escape from. I have never heard him refer to her as ‘crazy’ even once, though she suffered from severe bipolar disorder that she was self-medicating with methamphetamine and in turn suffered from meth psychosis.

I do understand that reactive abuse is a thing and victims react in many ways but that is the crux of the little alarm that goes off when that certain type of straight man starts talking about his ‘crazy ex girlfriend(s)’, he does not talk about a human who was flawed and hurt him, he is not speaking about a person who struggled with severe mental health issues, he is not talking about a person at all because women are not people to him. They are nebulous concepts, machinery that malfunctions and can be considered ‘crazy’ when it fails to do the things he wants and pushes back on his behavior. There is a difference between an abusive/unwell/toxic former girlfriend and a ‘crazy ex girlfriend’.

I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world

Let's say I really wanted to reduce the number of children who die in car accidents. Car accidents are really bad, right? Nobody disagrees about that. And it would be much better for both the environment and the kids' health if they spent more time walking, or taking the bus. Perfectly reasonable. More cars off the road, safer roads, fewer kids getting hurt, healthier kids. A win-win!

Therefore, let's ban children from traveling by car and require all cars to have a scanner on the door that scans the government ID of everyone who gets in the car to make sure no kids are in there. After all, kids get hurt in car accidents all the time! We need to ban this right away!
